A Request for Proposals:
Timberland seeks Community-Based Earth Day Volunteer Projects
Event Date: Thursday, May 12th, 2016
Project Theme: Community Greening and Tree Planting
Proposals Due: March 4rd, 2016
Timberland strives to operate at the intersection of commerce and justice. We believe in doing well
and doing good and in providing our employees with the opportunity to do the same. In 1992
Timberland launched the Path of ServiceTM program that provides employees with up to 40 paid
hours per year to serve in their communities during regularly scheduled work hours. Twice a year,
Timberland organizes large scale service events for employees worldwide so they can pull on their
boots and make a difference. Earth Day is one of our two annual global celebrations of service and
we seek proposals for meaningful service projects for our Stratham-based employees.
We are an outdoor brand and we want to help green our communities to encourage people to explore
and enjoy the outdoors. To this end, we seek proposals for Earth Day service projects that can
accommodate a preferred minimum of 50 volunteers and that contribute to the greening of our
communities. Greening projects may include creating and/or improving: public greenways or trail
systems, community gardens, playgrounds, outdoor classrooms, or edible gardens for schools. A
typical Earth Day will engage around 400 volunteers in service at multiple project sites around the
Seacoast.

All of our Earth Day projects will be selected and executed according to Timberland’s GREEN
Standard. The Standard ensures all Timberland service projects reflect our commitment to
communities and the environment.
GREEN is an acronym for:
Grassroots – our service projects will address pressing, grassroots driven, community needs.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – we prefer projects that allow us to use recycled or repurposed materials.
We will also ensure that all recyclable waste is recycled from our service sites.
Engagement – we will drive scale and long term sustainability by ensuring relevant community
stakeholders are engaged in our projects.
Education – both internal and external education is critical to ensure long term sustainability of
projects and green communities.
Neutrality – we will look for projects that forward our goal of carbon neutrality.
