SMU – Allied Health Science (AHS) Diploma course by Distance Education Minimum Criteria for Learning Centres The Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) has developed job oriented and innovative diploma courses in Allied Health Sciences by distance education. 6 courses namely Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) of two years duration, Diploma in Radiology & Imaging Technology (DRIT) of two year duration, Diploma in Health Information Administration (DHIA) of one year duration, Diploma in Patient Care Aid (DPCA) of two year duration, Diploma in Hospital Equipment Maintenance (DHEM) of one year duration, PG Diploma / Diploma in Pharmacy Sales Management (PGDPSM) of one year duration are scheduled to commence from July-August 2002. The courses will be conducted strictly in accordance with SMU’s policies and systems of distance education. Our objective is to enable the students admitted to the course to learn at their own pace, at their own place and at a time convenient to them. Applications are invited from organizations that meet the following mandatory criteria for recognition as Learning centre. Who Can Apply: Any health care organization fulfilling the following minimum mandatory criteria either by itself or in collaboration of any educational institution or diagnostic centre or in collaboration with a hospital fulfilling the following minimum mandatory criteria can apply for recognition as a Learning centre. General: a) Hospital with not less than 50 beds (excluding newborn beds) offering at least general medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology and pediatric services. b) Center must have or arrange other faculty for counseling in communication and computer skills as prescribed in the curriculum. c) Must have two classrooms to accommodate at least 25 students per batch. d) Must have reference library with prescribed reference books in adequate numbers. e) May have audio visual aids, OHPs, Slide projectors, audio video media players. f) Must have 2-3 computers. g) Wards : 2 or 3 General Wards (10 Beds each) h) Ambulance i) Operation Theatre j) Minor OT Special Requirements for specific Diploma Course 1. Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT): a) In addition to the general criteria specified above the centres must have laboratory offering routine hematology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pathology and transfusion services. b) Centre must have at least one Pathologist with DCP or MD and Microbiologist and Biochemist with M.Sc, available for counseling and supervise practical services for 200 hrs. per batch per semester. c) Centre must have a senior technician with BMLT or equivalent qualification. d) Additional equipment such as auto analyser will be additional qualification. 2. Diploma in Radiography (DRIT): 1. In addition to the general criteria mentioned above the centre must have at least 300 or 500 MA X-ray machine with image intensifier. 2. One Portable X-ray machine. 3. Ultrasound Machine 4. Access to modern imaging services such as CT scan and MRI for adequate exposure to the students. 5. One Radiologist with MD or DMRD available for 160 hrs. of counseling per batch per semester. 6. One B.Sc Radiographer or equivalent. 7. Desirable to have a part time Physicist available for counseling as required. 8. ECG machine 3. Diploma in Health information Administration (DHTA): 1. In addition to the general criteria specified above the centre must have full-fledged medical record services. 2. Duly qualified medical record officer with BMRSc or DMRSc or graduate with medical record technician or equivalent. 4. Diploma in Patient care Aid (DPCA): 1. In addition to the general criteria given above, centre must have fullfledged nursing services. 2. One senior nurse tutor with B.Sc Nursing or equivalent with teaching experience. 5. Diploma in Hospital equipment maintenance (DHEM): In addition to the general criteria given above the centre must have a Biomedical engineer or hospital equipment maintenance engineer available for counseling students for 200 hrs. per batch per semester. An electrician with ‘B’ certificate and with ITI certificate or equivalent must be available. 6. Post Graduate (PGDPSM): Diploma in Pharmacy sales management 1. In addition to the general criteria given above the centre must have a Pharmacy or equivalent qualification available for counseling sessions for 160 hrs. per batch per semester. The Learning Centre application format must include the following: a) List of teaching staff at the centre with qualification and designation and contact address where necessary. b) The name, designation and contact information of the person who will act as academic coordinator at the centre. c) The Registration information of the organization with evidence of ownership. The name and address of the CEO d) Details of facilities available for conducting the courses. e) List of equipment. f) Proof of affiliation with other centres. Student Intake: The minimum number of students in a centre for one programme will be 25. The maximum number will be determined and allotted by SMU on the basis of the inspection report. Validity of Learning Centre status: If recognised the Learning centre status is applicable only to the principle applicant and not to any affiliating centre.
