Today’s work will be the
big review for the fourth
chapter. This will include
special emphasis on the
vocabulary, the formulation
of the verb, avoir, and a
focus on the possessive
adjectives. The forms of
special adjectives will also
be considered as will be the
culture of the family and
housing in France.
The big chapter test will
occur on tomorrow.
Students will also present
the creative family tree
projects, “Les Arbres de la
Famille.” Their requirements are to display unique
and specific layers creatively and effectively. These
shall be graded on neatness,
information, creativity, and
how well they display. I
anticipate good efforts;
The students did not take
the spelling quiz because of
my absence last Friday, so
that will be the first order of
business on today.
Once that is completed,
we shall review vocabulary
for tomorrow test and return to the introduction of
the Romantic period.
Students will also be
instructed to read the first
selection listed for this
period in Irving’s “The
Devil and Tom Walker.”

Holt McDougal Literature:
American Literature
Today, we will begin the
work for chapter 5, usually one
of French I’s favorite chapters.
Guess why?: the food chapter!
As usual, we shall begin with
the vocabulary of the first
section and once that is
completed, we shall go on to
the second set of words.
The lesson will be on the
meals and the foods of France
in the first section. Upon
completion of this, they will
analyze the table setting. This
work will prepare them for
their French Day Activity if I
decide to go with that this
year.
If not, they will prepare recipes
for their own enrichment.
Students are expected to
follow up with this vocabulary
at home and prepare
themselves for the usual
vocabulary quiz at the
beginning of all their chapters.
We will thoroughly discuss
the vocabulary of chapter 5
and assess whether we are
ready for a quiz on this
material.
If readiness is not obvious,
the class will begin the first
concept of the chapter: the
verb aller=to go and all of its
forms. Because students are
now accustomed to verb
study, this verb should be a
piece of cake to contend
with.
Students will be reminded of
tomorrow’s spelling quiz (list
#10) as well as the vocabulary
flash cards for unit #10.
After these housekeeping
items, we shall discuss “The
Devil and Tom Walker as the
first selection of Romantic
writing. We will also point out
the im-portance of maintaining
the SOL focus as they prepare
for the Reading SOL.
They should be reading and
analyzing The Scarlet Letter.
Creative Chapter projects are
due beginning next
Wednesday.
Spelling #10 will be the first
order of business. Vocabulary
flash card preparation for unit
!0 is also due today.
We will continue with more
literary preparation and the
assigning of the Fireside
Poets’ material.
Continued work on the
novel by Hawthorne will be
allowed to dovetail
consecutive chapter
preparation..
