The Great Gatsby

Chapter 3: Gatsby’s Party

Directions: Review the first pages of chapter 3. Then complete the following assignment.

1)

Review the descriptions of Gatsby’s party.

2) Choose a passage that you think best captures the mood and experience of the party (but not from Gatsby’s point of view). Pages 39-41 and 46 are especially rich in detail.

3) Quote the first words of the passage with the page number in writing at the top of your page.

4) Look carefully at the language of your passage. Consider the verbs, figurative language, images, and colors. Create a list of the 20 words that stand out most to you.

Use your list of words to create a “found poem” for the passage. A “found poem” is a poem made up of words or phrases from the text. You should not add your own words.

6)

Examine your “found poem” and the mood it represents. Write a welldeveloped response about the mood of your chosen passage and how it connects to the overall experience of Gatsby’s parties. a. Write on a separate sheet of paper. b. Write approximately one page.
