Johnson Memorial Hospital Volunteer Services Department 201 Chestnut Hill Road Stafford Springs, CT 06076 860-684-8216 patricia.lake@jmmc.com SUMMARY OF VOLUNTEER ROLES The following list gives a brief description of most of the volunteer roles Patient Contact Roles Cardiac Rehabilitation Volunteer Department: Cardiac Rehabilitation – Enfield, weekday hours Summary: Assist staff with set-up of program equipment, support patients during exercise, run errands and provide clerical support. Skills: Physically able to participate in exercise sessions and desire to interact with patients to help their motivation. Diagnostic Imaging Volunteer (JMH and Enfield) Department: Diagnostic Imaging Summary: Assist staff with various duties to help departmental operation. Assist in filing, retrieving files, making copies. Also, transporting patients as needed. Skills: Mature and reliable, good rapport with patients. Emergency Department Volunteer Department: Emergency Department Summary: Assist staff to help patients receive prompt, courteous, and suitable care; maintain examining rooms and equipment, transporting patients, specimens and requisitions within the hospital. Rounding on patients to help with non-clinical needs. Skills: Ability to relate well to patients and families. Must be mature, responsible, maintain a professional attitude, react calmly in stressful situations, and walk a great deal. Medical/Surgical Volunteer Department: Nursing Units on Second and Third Floors Summary: Assist nursing staff, including answering call bells, passing meal trays and running errands. Skills: Friendly, outgoing individual. Able to relate compassionately to patients. Nutrition Aide Volunteer Department: Nutrition Services, mainly mornings, 8:30—10:30 weekdays and weekends Summary: Work with Nutrition Aides and patients to complete menu selections based upon diet restrictions. Skill: Willing to learn basic diets, dietary restrictions, and be sensitive to the needs of patient. Obstetrics Volunteer Department: Obstetrics, late afternoons—evenings and weekends Summary: Assist with clerical duties of unit, bring specimens to the lab, and assist nurses as able. Skills: Mature, dependable, have interest in office/secretarial procedures or in Obstetrics. Pastoral Visitor Department: Pastoral Care Summary: General visiting with new patients to inform them of Pastoral Care program at JMH. Skills: Active member of a local church or synagogue is helpful. Prefer some pastoral training or background in hospital visitation. Physical Medicine Volunteer Department: Physical Medicine Department – JMH or Enfield Facility Summary: Keep area clean, transport patients, assist with some treatments and answer the telephone. Skills: Pleasant and compassionate manner with patients. 1 Same Day Services Volunteer—JMH and Enfield Department: Same Day Services, weekday hours Summary: Greet patients, run errands, prepare patient admission packets. Skills: Pleasant and compassionate manner with patients. Cancer Center Volunteer Roles(3)--Enfield Department: Cancer Center and Infusion Summary: Energy therapy, Patient Resource/Support and Clerical roles are available in the Cancer Center Skills: Energy therapy volunteers must have documented Reiki training. Support/Clerical roles required pleasant compassionate manner with patients. Non-Patient Contact Roles Accounts Payable Volunteer Department: Accounting, weekday hours Summary: Assisting Accounts Payable staff. Skills: File paid invoices in alphabetical order in filing cabinets. Able to work with minimal supervision. Central Stores/Materials Management Volunteer Department: Materials Management, weekdays Summary: Assist with stocking and stock deliveries. Skills: Organized and able to walk a great deal. Some lifting. Development and Community Relations Volunteer Department: Development/Community Relations, weekday hours Summary: Provide clerical support to Development/Community Relations staff. Skills: Must have good phone manner, ability to use photocopier and familiarity with keyboard to do data entry. Emergency Department Patient Call-Back Volunteer Department: Emergency Department Summary: Make phone calls to recent Emergency patients to assess patient satisfaction Skills: Excellent customer service skills required. Mature, compassionate demeanor. Filing/Scanning Volunteer Department: Health Information Services Summary: Assist with general office duties such as scanning and some data entry. Skills: Knowledge of office procedures and willingness to learn scanner operation. Able to work with minimal supervision. Gift Shop Volunteer Department: Gift Shop/Auxiliary Summary: Sell merchandise, keep shelves neat and clean, open and close shop, use cash register and account for all sales. Skills: Good aptitude for figures and selling, able to deal with the public. Knowledge of cash register helpful. Friendly, outgoing individual. Laboratory Volunteer Department: Laboratory/Pathology Summary: Assist Laboratory/Pathology personnel with clerical duties and stocking. Skills: Able to perform a variety of clerical tasks including filing, typing, stocking and photocopying. Fridays are best. Medical Library Volunteer Department: Medical Library Summary: Catalog incoming material, file, look-up information as needed, stamp and log books and journals, stamp mail, and keep library in order. Skills: Basic clerical skills. Pharmacy Clerk Volunteer Department: Pharmacy Summary: Help Pharmacy staff with distribution activities. Skills: Ability to walk a great deal. Polite telephone manner, clear diction, conscientious. 2
