As part of that celebration, we are giving everyone a special offering envelope. You have the opportunity to select one of three areas for giving. First, we want to continue to support micro loans for women in the Kerio Valley as they start and grow businesses to provide for their families. Second, the medical clinic in the Kerio Valley has numerous needs for equipment and supplies. Third, there is a choice to give to ‘where most needed’ which will be used to meet the needs seen as critical by our Kenyan partners who are indeed appreciative and grateful for the partnership with us here at First Congregational UCC. The delegation from this congregation that traveled to Kenya in June heard ongoing and heartfelt thanks, not only for the financial support but also for the prayers and relationships. Please indicate on the envelope which of these three areas you would like to support. Every year I am touched to learn how the United Church of Christ is making a difference in people’s lives as we share God’s love in meaningful ways with our friends and partners around the globe. Through the gifts of our prayers and of Our Church’s Wider Mission dollars we support these partnerships. We also have an opportunity this Sunday to support our Kenya Partnerships with our donations, which will assist the Health Clinic, Women’s Micro Loan and many other needs. We will also have an opportunity for student sponsorship, which will help many children with education. Our partnerships with Kenya and around the globe are concrete expressions of our care, concern, and love for humanity, creation and the world. I was personally touched by our global partnership when my own daughter, Anna-Marie, chose to go into the Peace Corps and was assigned to a village in Lesotho, Southern Africa. I was able to make connections with our UCC missionary to Lesotho, Mark Behle. Mark made contact with Anna on several occasions, helping her better understand local culture, customs, and information that was useful in her work. Moreover, Mark was a reassuring presence for this anxious mom, letting me know that my daughter was “O.K.” Furthermore, he gave me concrete guidance as to how I might best support her during her two-year assignment in Lesotho. Mark’s ministry is highlighted in this 200th Anniversary celebration. testimony here for you. The Joy of Sharing Good News June 10, 2011 8 I’ve included his In the synagogue in the town of Nazareth Jesus shared Isaiah’s message of hope to God’s people. He was sent to bring the Good News of God’s love to the people and revealed this love by his words and deeds. Jesus also commanded his disciples to go into the world and spread the message of God’s love for all people. Is there anyone who does not like to bring good news to others? Don’t we all enjoy the blessing of being a blessing to others? These other words from Isaiah come to mind: “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, ‘Your God reigns!’” (52:7) The African nation of Lesotho has one of the highest HIV/AIDS infection rates in the world. Statistics show there are as many as 200,000 orphans caused by this pandemic. At Masitise High School there are classes where 60% of the students have lost one or both parents. The youth of Lesotho certainly need good news. Thanks to support given for Global Ministries work in Lesotho, there is good news to share with the youth of Lesotho. Students at Masitise in need of financial assistance to pay school fees receive the joyous news that there is help available. The expressions of relief in the faces of parent and child are readily apparent as uncertain futures without education are transformed into ones with great possibilities. Each year at Masitise a number of students attend the Scripture Union High School Camp. At this Bible camp the Good News of Jesus Christ is shared as campers experience several days of Bible study, fellowship, fun and good food. Young lives are brightened, strengthened and changed. The Masitise youth are able to attend thanks to “good news” from Global Ministries. For all of you that support the work of Global Ministries, thanks for your “beautiful feet” that bring good news to people around the world. As you continue in this ministry of giving, be mindful of the great joy you are bringing into the lives of others. Mark Behle Thank you for supporting our global partnerships with your prayers, your donations to Kenya and for your pledges to the United Church of Christ, OCWM, through First Congregational U.C.C. Appleton. Blessings, Pastor Jane 9 are identified as a possible candidate, you will be contacted for an interview. ANNOUNCING! MOVIE NIGHT October 7 7:00 p.m.—Pathways Theater PRAY THE DEVIL BACK TO HELL Pray the Devil Back to Hell is a gripping account of a group of brave and visionary women who demanded peace for Liberia, a nation torn to shreds by decades old civil war.
