Type Spec Book:
Using the information from the poster assignments you will Design and produce
A 20-page specimen book for a typeface that demonstrates the unique qualities of your font. 4 colors
A type specimen is a booklet that demonstrates the range of a typeface, applied to
headlines and text in a variety of sizes.
Type specimens have existed for centuries to help designers pick a font for a project. Type specimens
today can be wildly flamboyant or classical in their approach.
Each variation of the typeface should be labeled on each page. Remember, you want people to know
exactly what they are getting when they go to buy this font and you want to show off your typographic
prowess.
You must include the following information in your booklets
· Page(s) that includes the entire font family see pages: 15, 58, 59
· Page(s) that includes the size range of the font family: Chapter Two
· Page that demonstrates your understanding of dashes and punctuation see pages: 10, 90, 91
· Page that shows the proper use of both paragraph indents and paragraph spacing 74, 75 so at least 2 pages of
copy.
Your booklets can't contain any photographic or illustrated images, drop shadows, stretched or distorted fonts and
can only contain the one font you chose for the project
When typesetting, pay attention to typographic details, including hyphenation, widows, orphans, etc.
Contents of your book:
Cover and inside covers you may choose to wrap your book in a paper jacket. Think creatively about
materials.
Title page: This is the first full spread inside your book. It should include your title, your name as editor
and designer, the year of publication, and the name of this course
Table of contents (optional) this provides a map to the interior of your book. It could be simple or quite
complex.
Colophon (optional)
Some books have a colophon at the back, which describes the typefaces used, and the paper or printing
method.
Avoid:
· Inappropriate font choices
· Too many fonts in a composition
· Mixing justification formats: bad alignment
· Density on the page
· Rivers of white space or edge issues
· Bad hyphenations
· Over use of !! and italic
· Proper spacing is critical. This includes spacing of all kinds: the space between lines, between words, and within wor
· Avoid overuse.
SPECIFICATIONS
Your booklets must be 8” x 10” or smaller. (So you can print it out on 11” x 17” paper), be creative.

Parameters:
This is a book and will need to be bound into a booklet.
The following are ways you can print and then bind your booklets.




Pamphlet stitch, sewn signature, or stapled signature. (These methods require back-to-back printing.)
French fold with glue or spiral binding (This is a folded sheet printed on one side and bound at the center.)
French fold adhered to a sewn “spine.”
Pages output as spreads and mounted back-to-back with double-stick tape, duotack, or other non-spray
adhesive.
