Advanced Placement Chemistry

Student Commitment Contract

A. Why is a student commitment contract necessary?

The Advanced Placement program is part of a nation-wide program that involves secondary schools, colleges, and the College Board. More than 2,000 universities and colleges worldwide grant college credit, advanced placement, or both to students successfully completing (grade 3 or higher out of a possible 5 on the AP exam) an AP course. AP courses are meant to offer college level curricula at the high school level.

These courses are highly regulated as to content and are very demanding. For that reason, a contract is needed to ensure that students understand what is expected of them in AP Chemistry and that it takes a high level of commitment to be successful.

B. What are the expectations of the AP Chemistry student?

The AP Chemistry student is expected to:

1.

remain in the course for its duration. It is not possible for a student to withdraw from AP Chemistry once the course has started.

2.

pay required course exam fee by the specified deadline.

3.

have completed Honors Chemistry with a grade of 90 and have the approval of the instructor.

4.

complete the assigned summer work.

5.

take the time and energy to complete daily homework assignments successfully (generally more than an hour daily).

6.

maintain a lab notebook. This is considered your personal property and is required by the College Board. This lab notebook may need to be presented to your future college in order to receive lab credit.

7.

spend additional time if necessary after school to finish lab experiments.

8.

perform safely in the laboratory setting.

9.

memorize lists of polyatomic ions, oxidations states, oxidizing agents, solubility rules, and other information necessary for the successful completion of the AP Chemistry course and the exam performance.

10.

seek extra help immediately if content is not understood. If you do not do this you will quickly get overwhelmed in this fast-paced course. It has proven significantly beneficial to form study groups with other students in this course to help one another.

11.

bring necessary materials to class daily, especially calculators and reference tables.

12.

take the AP Chemistry exam.
