Course Description: ART 237 Fashion Photography - Insight into the profession of Commercial Fashion
Photography. Application of the principles of design, lighting, composition, and posing in fashion photography,
Studio and Location along with basic principles of marketing and presenting your work for hire.
Prerequisites: Prerequisites: ART131
Required Text: Fashion Photography - a complete guide to the tools and techniques of the trade

Required Equipment: DSLR Camera with manual control of aperture and shutter, and Hot Shoe for wireless
strobe trigger (pocket wizard). Sturdy Tri-pod. Flash drive dedicated to this class – Minimum of 8G
(recommend 16G), a card reader or cable to transfer your pictures. Access to Photoshop CS 5 or newer
software. External flash for off camera location shooting (Speedlite with off camera cord).
Competencies:
1. Use basic studio lighting portraits.
2. Evaluate and employ natural lighting and strobe techniques, both indoors and outdoor locations.
3. Implement essential photography skills of Exposure, Focus, and White Balance
4. Implement lighting techniques to create mood, tone, and drama.
5. Implement techniques in posing models.
6. Apply natural and creative posing with or without props for Advertising, Editorial and Catalog uses.
7. Apply composition and the principles of "Devine Proportion" to create the greatest impact images.
8. Integrate the principles of design and describe their effects on mood and emotion.
9. Identify and describe the practices which relate to fashion photography as a profession.
Course Requirements:
 Attend class and participate.
 Be on time - This is a COMMERCIAL photography class, tardiness and late assignments will not
be accepted.
 Participate in group discussions, cooperate with other classmates, and contribute to class exercises.
 Proper use and care of equipment.
 Complete all assignments and projects. To be successful you must turn in your work on time. Plan
on spending additional time outside of class to prepare for this class. I do not accept late work. All
assignments are due before the class begins , via e-mail - john@CovingtonShoots.com - prior
to 3:30 the day assignment is due.
 Bring your camera and speedlite type strobe to every class.
Attendance and Participation:
 Attendance is required.
 After two absences you will be withdrawn from the course.
 Official absences (field trips, tournaments) and religious holidays shall not count in the total number of
absences allowed. However, students shall obtain official absence verification from the appropriate
Dean, and present it to the instructor before the absence. Prior arrangements must be made with
instructor for make-up work. If arrangements have been made, student will not be penalized.
 If you have a special circumstance that may affect attendance/tardiness, notify the instructor on the
FIRST day of class.






Tardiness – Tardiness will result an absence for the class. You need to be on time and present for
the entire class. A grace period of 10 minutes will be allowed to be in the classroom, after 6:10 you
will be counted as absent. After two absences you will be withdrawn.
Participation is required. You are required to be actively engaged in the subject matter being
taught. Doing non-class related activities during class may result in a reduction of points. No Cell
Phones - Turn Your Phone OFF, No FaceBook, No Texting allowed during class time.
Complete the assigned projects. Each assignment is in preparation for the following weeks class.
Material from the book "Fashion Photography/ Bruce Smith" will be used in quiz(s), the midterm and
final. Take notes for other supplied information during lessons. Late assignments will not be
accepted.
Technical problems are not a valid excuse for not turning in work. Back up your work!
This class is to prepare you for working as a Professional Photographer. Unprofessional behavior can
lose you the job or client. You can not show up late for your job, or turn in photo assignments past
deadlines... Period! Phones ringing during class, general disrespectful behavior is not acceptable.
Only one warning will be given per semester. The next occurrence will result in the loss of
participation points for the day, which equals an absence, and you know what happens after
two absences.
Every PC student shoot represents the school. Please treat all people, locations and equipment with
care and respect.

Special Notes:
 Cheating on assignments may result in a failing grade for the class and a letter written to the Dean of
Students for further action. Cheating includes having others prepare your assignments, manipulate
your images, using images NOT taken for this class, or images taken prior to assignment. I will check
meta-data on your images.
 Cell phones are to be turned off during class hours.
 Students may not leave class to answer their phone. If there is a situation where there is potential for
legitimate emergency outside of class the instructor must be notified in advance.
 Any action that affects the class negatively will be considered disruptive and may result in the student
losing class participation points for the day and the student being asked to leave class.
 If you miss an assignment or a test, you may be given a chance to make it up at the instructor’s
discretion. If you are going to miss the final or midterm, you must notify the instructor so it can
be taken in advance.
 In an attempt to save trees assignments and handouts may be given electronically. Every student is
required to have email and check it regularly. Assignments and class updates may be provided via
Email. If you are in need of a hard copy please let the instructor know in advance and he will provide
one to you.
 Studio use: PC has an extremely nice studio available for student use. Students may be allowed to
reserve the studio during open studio time. Students must demonstrate a clear understanding
of the studio policies and proper use of the equipment to the instructor in order to reserve the
studio. The student holding the reservation for the studio is responsible for the condition of the studio
and all the equipment. Misuse of the studio or the equipment may result in loss of studio privileges.
Studio reservations must be made at least 48 hrs in advance. Reservations are subject to change. A
reservation does not guarantee that you will be able to use the studio at the time requested. Please
email pc.studio.reservations@gmail.com in order to reserve the studio.






All work is due at the beginning of class. Any assignments submitted after they are collected
will be considered late and will not be accepted.
I do not accept late work. No excuses. No exceptions. If you have missed a class submit the
assignment via email by the DEADLINE - this will provide you a confirmation that the
assignment has been submitted before the class starts.
You will be graded on creative camera control. Every image must effectively utilize aperture,
shutter, iso, white balance and focus to achieve the desired picture.
Criteria - Each assignment has specific criteria. Please read the directions and refer to examples
given in class. If you don’t understand an assignment please ask questions. You are encouraged to
email me if you have questions about an assignment. I will respond as soon as I can.
Submissions – Only submit what is specified in the assignment. Additional images will not be
graded - ONLY PROVIDE YOUR TOP IMAGES for review and grading.
All students are required to craft the light, pose the model and shoot their own images for
each assignment. All students will be graded on how effectively they communicate with their models
and assistants and take direction when they are assisting.

Resubmitting assignment – Assignments may be redone for additional points at the instructor’s
discretion.

Photography is a fine art. Some images presented may contain nudity or graphic images.
Finished assignments will include three versions of your image:
1. Full Frame Original High Rez .jpg unmanipulated file - as shot in camera - NON MODIFIED.
2. Manipulated images must be turned in .psd LAYERS revealing the original file and modified files in
layers.
3. Flat "For Print" 300 PPI full resolution .jpg file 12"x8" ( or 8"x12") or 2400 pixels by 3600 pixels
4. E-Mail sized, with your Watermark, 72PPI, 600 pixels by 900 pixels (or 900x600 pixels landscape)
This syllabus and the assignments are subject to change at the Instructor’s discretion. I plan on adjusting
content based on input and needs of the class.

WITHDRAWAL POLICY
 Student may initiate an official withdrawal from any course by submitting a withdrawal form with
required signatures to the A&R office within published deadlines.
 Failure to attend any classes is not a guarantee for a refund or an excuse of debt incurred through
registration.
 Official date of withdrawal is last date of attendance as determined by student’s withdrawal or as
reported by the instructor.
 The official date of withdrawal will determine degree of refund, if any.
 Failure to file official withdrawal form within published deadlines can result in a failing grade and may
effect refund of course tuition and fees.

at the photographers studio or elsewhere, and in any and all media now or hereafter known for illustration, promotion, art,
