MYCHAEL DANNA RECEIVES RICHARD KIRK AWARD
AT BMI FILM/TV AWARDS
Beverly Hills ceremony also honors year’s top film and television composers
BEVERLY HILLS, CA, May 15, 2014 - Broadcast Music, Inc.® (BMI®), the global leader in music
rights management, held its annual Film/TV Awards last night at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly
Hills, California. The ceremony saluted the composers of music featured in the past year’s topgrossing films, top-rated primetime network television series and highest-ranking cable network
programs.
Mychael Danna received BMI’s Richard Kirk Award, which is bestowed on composers who have
made significant contributions to the realm of film and television music. As the 2014 recipient of the
Richard Kirk Award, Danna joins a prestigious list that includes Cliff Martinez, David Arnold, Rachel
Portman (PRS), Alan Silvestri, David Newman, Thomas Newman, Christopher Young, George S.
Clinton, Harry Gregson-Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Michael Kamen, Mark Mothersbaugh, Danny
Elfman, Alan Menken, Mike Post, Lalo Schifrin, John Barry, Rolfe Kent, Charlie Fox and John
Williams.
BMI also acknowledged two luminaries in the fields of composition and film music journalism:
composer Randy Edelman and journalist Jon Burlingame. Former Richard Kirk award recipient
Edelman, who has composed for films including The Last of the Mohicans, Gods and Generals, While
You Were Sleeping and The Mask, received the BMI Spotlight Award in recognition of the use of his
theme for The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. in games of the Olympiads spanning nearly two
decades. Burlingame, a leading writer on the subject of music for film and the author of four books,
was given a Special Citation of Appreciation for his expertise in the discipline.
Mychael Danna is an Academy Award-winning film composer recognized for his evocative blending of
non-western traditions with orchestral and electronic music. He composed the 2013 Oscar and
Golden Globe-winning score for Ang Lee’s Life of Pi, as well as many award-winning scores for his
longtime collaborator, director Atom Egoyan. Danna has composed music for all of Egoyan’s films
since 1987’s Family Viewing, winning the Genie for films Exotica, Felicia’s Journey, Ararat and The
Sweet Hereafter. Other noted credits include Oscar-winning and Oscar-nominated films such
as Moneyball, Capote, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Monsoon Wedding, Shattered Glass,
Little Miss Sunshine, (500) Days of Summer, Surf’s Up, Water, Antwone Fisher, Being Julia and Girl,
Interrupted.
