Dual Credit
1.
04-2003
Dual Credit/Enrollment in Parkland College District 505 may occur in one of three ways.
a.
A high school junior or senior, with the permission of his/her high school and
parent/guardian, enrolls in a course on the Parkland College campus for which s/he
receives both college credit and credit toward fulfilling the requirements for high school
graduation.
b.
A high school junior or senior, with the permission of his/her high school and
parent/guardian, enrolls in a course at his/her or a nearby high school for which s/he
receives both college credit and credit toward fulfilling the requirements for high school
graduation.
c.
A high school junior or senior, with the permission of his/her high school and
parent/guardian, enrolls in a distance education class, either individually or with a group of
other high school students, for which s/he receives both college credit and credit toward
fulfilling the requirements for high school graduation.
2.
High school credit is awarded at the sole discretion of the local high school district.
3.
College credit is awarded at the sole discretion of Parkland College.
4.
Courses for which college credit is awarded must meet the following standards:
a.
The course may be taught by either a college or a high school faculty member, but in
either case, the qualifications determined and required by the college to teach in the
discipline must be met.
b.
The Parkland College course outline or a Parkland-approved substitute must be used
to teach the course.
c.
Student evaluation, textbooks used, appropriate prerequisites and/or placement
scores, instructional methods, etc. must be used in the same manner as they would in
a regular college section of the course (see course outline).
5.
Both pre-baccalaureate and career courses may be taught.
6.
Courses to be taught will be jointly identified and selected by representatives of participating
District 505 high schools and Parkland College.
7.
The cost of the course for each student will be the standard tuition and fees. Students may be
billed directly or schools may be billed at their discretion. If the number of students enrolling
for the class is below the minimum required by Parkland, schools will have the option of
purchasing the necessary additional seats to make the class go.
8.
Parkland College and each District 505 high school will designate one local contact person
through whom general and scheduling/enrollment information will flow.
9.
While individual contracts between Parkland College and individual participating high schools
will not be developed, the procedures and understandings described on succeeding pages of
this document will constitute the manner in which dual credit/enrollment will be carried out by
the parties to this partnership.
OPERATIONAL UNDERSTANDINGS
The purpose of this section is to document the manner in which dual credit will be carried out by the
parties to this partnership.
General Features
Pre-baccalaureate, career, and general education courses offered to high school juniors or seniors
are selected by Parkland College based on recommendations and requests of participating high
schools. A list of courses to be offered will be prepared and circulated to the high schools by January
15 of each year.
Each high school, at its own discretion, will determine which Parkland courses will be offered to its
students for dual credit.
Successful completion of dual credit courses will result in the student receiving both college and high
school credit. Students should be reminded that certificates and degrees at Parkland require a 2.00
(C) or better grade point average to graduate. See the Parkland College catalog for further
information.
Quality Assurance
Policies - All state policies specified by the Illinois Community College Board, accreditation standards
specified by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and discipline-related accrediting
bodies, and Parkland College policies that apply to courses, instructional procedures, and academic
standards which apply to college-level courses offered for college students will apply to Parkland
courses offered for high school students at the campus or other sites.
Faculty - Faculty for dual credit courses offered under the auspices of this partnership must be
acceptable to both the high school district and Parkland College. Faculty may be full-time high school
faculty, full-time Parkland faculty, or other identified instructional staff, provided that he/she is
qualified per each institution’s requirements. Individuals interested in teaching a Parkland course for
secondary students, regardless of the site, must be approved by the high school district and must
submit an application and other supporting documents to Parkland College in the same manner that
is required of all candidates for part-time Parkland faculty positions in order to be considered for the
position.
Behavior – Students will be expected to meet the behavior requirements of the facility in which the
course is being taught. Students attending classes at the Parkland campus will be expected to
comport themselves as adults. Academic expectations will be the same as for any college student
enrolled in a college course.
Course Content - All Parkland courses offered for secondary students must use and comply with
Parkland course-specific outline with respect to placement scores, prerequisites, objectives, outline of
material covered, learning outcomes, methods of evaluation, and other requirements as specified.
Textbooks and Instructional Materials - All textbooks and other instructional materials used for
Parkland courses taught for high school students must be the same as used on campus or must be
approved by the appropriate Parkland Department Chair.
Student Eligibility Criteria
High school students must meet the eligibility requirements for each individual course in which they
wish to enroll, including junior or senior status, a high school GPA of 2.0 or higher on a four-point
scale, appropriate placement scores, prerequisites, interviews, etc. High school students will also be
subject to academic probation and suspension provisions of the College catalog.
Students registering for dual credit must be in good standing at their high school.
Accommodations for students qualifying under the Americans with Disabilities Act will be applied in
the same manner in which they apply to regular college students.
Registration/Withdrawal/Grading
Registration - High school students approved to enroll in dual credit/enrollment courses must register
with Parkland prior to the course start date or within the first week of class if special arrangements are
agreed to by the high school and Parkland College. To complete registration with the College,
students must have satisfactory placement scores (if required), written consent from an appropriate
high school official, written permission from their parent or guardian, and a completed Parkland
College application form.
The responsible Parkland Department Chair will have final approval for high school students to
register in college classes. The Department Chair must sign the dual credit enrollment form before
the student is enrolled in the class.
Dual credit students who do not have all required signatures and paperwork submitted by the first day
of classes will not be enrolled for college credit for that semester.
All forms and signatures must be received by Parkland College before the student will be registered
at the college. If timelines as described above are not met, the student will not be enrolled.
Students enrolled in classes taught by Parkland faculty or by high school faculty being paid by
Parkland incur tuition charges. Failure to pay tuition by the advertised deadline will result in
withdrawal from college enrollment. For classes taught at the college or by a college faculty in
another venue, complete withdrawal will result.
Students enrolled in classes taught by high school faculty as part of their regular load will not incur
tuition charges.
Withdrawal - Students may withdraw their course enrollment from the College under the same terms
as students who are enrolled in regular college courses (refer to the Parkland College Catalog).
Schools may withdraw any of their students by contacting the appropriate Parkland College official.
Unless the withdrawal takes place before the end of the second week of classes, withdrawn students
will have a transcript that show a W for the course.
Grading - Grades for dual credit/enrollment courses will be assigned by the faculty and transmitted to
the Parkland Admissions Office for official recording on a Parkland transcript. High school grades for
each class will be assigned and submitted as specified by the high school.
