The work camp will be organized in cooperation with ecological association "Bura" from Mostar.
'Hutovo blato" is nature park and it is unique sub Mediterranean swamp and one of the most significant
birds winter resort in Europe. It is located in southeast Herzegovina, on the left side of the river
Neretva, on territory of municipalities Capljina and Stolac. W: The main job of the volunteers will be
editing te educational paths, observatory for birds and cleaning the Park. Volunteers will work together
with local population, activists and employees of the Park. Volunteers will have chance to participate in
different workshops and amusing program. A: In Park area, in tents and in case of necessity, in Park's

Project is organised by Club of Researchers \"Green Head\", Mostar www.zelenaglava.com, this is first
international workcamp of this kind organised in Mostar, on green city oasis. W: The main job for the
volunteers will be cleaning of city green oasis terain \"Trim Staza\" from garbage and unorganic waste
left behind. The volunteers will work together with local population and other local participants of the
camp. Volunteers will also prepare some of the facilities for the camp. The work camp is also followed
by the various visiting sites, historical and geo morphological, and one great weekend trip to Boracko
Lake. A:In School Sala, just in center of Mostar, next to the Cultural Centre Abraševic. Kitchen and

building was totally destroyed during the war. Despite the fact that war was finished twelve yeas ago,
reconstruction process is uncompleted and municipality of Glamoc is considered as one of the most
destroyed municipalities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. W: Volunteers will work on interior decoration
(painting) of Culture centre building and on horticultural decoration of the garden. Volunteers will
work together with local population, activists and employees of Cultre center. A: In adapted room of

organize international work camp Dobojska tvrda as a part of manifestation "Cultural summer in Doboj
fortress". W: The main job of the volunteers will be everyday performances and concerts with cultural
and art content during the work camp and art expression in wood. A: Volunteers will be accommodated
in centre of the town, in pupils’ dorm. The rooms are from two-bed till six-bed. The shower and toilets

This will be the second international workcamp that is organized in cooperation with NGO
"Milenijum", www.milenijum-youth.org. The workcamp will be organized in village Gornja Lepenica,
on hillsides of mountain Motajica. Srbac is north from Banja Luka, on border with Croatia. W:
Volunteers will work together with local population and local volunteers. They will work on building
and accommodating the excursion site. Also, they will install wooden houses, tables, benches, swings
and seesaws. Volunteers will participate in ecological and psychosocial workshops. A: In tents F: Will

Organised by "Youth Centre Livno", www.cmlivno.org, this is 6th international work camp organised
in Drzanlije, on Sturba riverbanks. W: The main job for the volunteers will be cleaning of riverbanks
(Sturba river) and bed from garbage and organic waste. The volunteers will work together with local
population and other local participants of the camp. Volunteers will also prepare some of the facilities
for the camp. The work camp is also followed by the excursion to Livno town, where volunteers will
have chance to visit all local notability and the city museum. A: Tents near the banks of Sturba River.

"Ex-Yu Rocks!" is unique, multiethnic and reintegration youth event (music festival) that is holding in
different parts of Bosnia from 1996. Krupa on Vrbas is 20 kilometres from Banja Luka, in beautiful
valley of river Vrbas. W: The main job of the volunteers will be preparation facilities for the festival,
help local population with indoor work, maintain hygiene during the festival and helping with
preparation of food. Volunteers will have chance to participate in different workshops (short film,

Youth council Konjic is organizing the work camp with the aim of promotion of sustainable
development and protection of life environment. The work camp will be contained of workshops, work
actions and excursions.. The municipality of Konjic is located in the region of Bosnia and Herzegovina
known as northern Herzegovina, roughly 50 kilometres south of Sarajevo. It is a mountainous, heavily
wooded area. The municipality extends on both sides of the Neretva River. W: Volunteers will clean
the canyon of river Neretva, beaches on Boracko Lake and make field for sand volleyball. The work
camp is also followed by the various workshops (creativity, tourist potential of this area, lectures about
mines and excursions (rafting on river Neretva, walking through canyon of river Rakitnica and to

Stara Zagora (SZ) is a mid-size Bulgarian town (170 000 inhabitants) with an ancient history and
heritage (older than 8000 years). In relation with the fast emerging town center and related construction
projects SZ Historic Museum implements an intensive program of rescue excavations discovering
Roman, Late Antique and Medieval pages of town history. In 2007 this 100 y/o institution moves to
another new building. Opening a call for 16 vols BYC is supporting following activities of the
Museum: rescue excavations, archaeological sites’ maintenance and the arrangement of new museum’s
building. All vols interested in Archaeology and Cultural heritage preservation are welcome. No
previous experience required. Excursions and workshops in the area of Archaeology provided.
Opportunities for sport and entertainment in Stara Zagora are a lot. W: 4-5 hours per day but Sundays.
Manual work during rescue excavations - digging, brushing, measuring, washing and cataloging
artifacts etc., during maintaining archaeological sites’ areas - painting, removing grass etc. and during
the arrangement of new museum’s building – cleaning, decoration and carrying boxes with materials.
A: In a 3- and 2-bed rooms with WC & Showers in a small village hotel near the town. F: Served in the

The project assists an expedition for documenting of medieval (9-17 century) frescoes preserved in the
abandoned churches and chapels of remote Western Bulgarian areas. The workcamp requires relevant
academic education (at least 3 years) in Orthodox iconography, Fine arts, Restoration or Architecture.
It is positioned in Sofia – the Bulgarian capital (1,5 million inhabitants) where accommodation and
lectures will take place but every-day work will be related with traveling to the church sites.
Specialized lectures and workshops in Bulgarian medieval history/Orthodox iconography and
Restoration as well as guided tours to Sofia sightseeing is provided. W: Sketching, measuring, and
taking photos and videos - 6-7 hours per day but Sundays. A: In a City center hostel. F: Breakfasts - in

W: The island of Pašman (63km2, 65km of irregular coast-line), belongs to the Zadar island group. The
island's well-preserved landscape features many species of medicinal and aromatic herbs, vineyards,
fields and olive groves. The camp has been organized for the second time in cooperation with TRS
Association which aims at improving the quality of life on the island. Volunteers will work on clearing
garbage off the beach. They will also help to renovate a local fort by cleaning and marking the 3-metrelong path which leads to the top (1000m). Local community will help volunteers in their work. A:

W: Trpanj is one of the oldest settlements on the Pelješac Peninsula, an oasis of crystalline sea and

a small hill in the Trpanj municipality. They will also work on clearing garbage off the beach, local

out the idea of voluntary work. Volunteers will work on clearing and marking paths, environmental

without Parental Care from Vinkovci. Volunteers will organize workshops for children from the Home
on the following topics: dancing, acting, drawing, jewellery-making, juggling, sports. Volunteers will
also help in preparing daily meals and occasionally spend time with children on the beach. A: Food and
accommodation will be arranged in a local children's home. Showers, toilets, sheets and blankets

in the centre, fixing the playground, clearing weeds and shrubs off the riverbanks, repairs etc.). The

MKYCCBT-01 "BITOLA OPEN CITY- ART FESTIVAL 2007" BITOLA

Bitola, town of consuls, is the second largest city in Republic of Macedonia. It's located at an altitude
of 600m, at the foot of the Pelister Mountains with over 80,000 inhabitants, while the entire Bitola
municipality numbers over 106,000. And in this town in this year is sixth edition and will be full of
happenings like rock concert as the highlight of the gathering, graffiti gallery, rollerblading
competition, street theatre, workshops, jam sessions evenings... W: Volunteers will work on festival
like staff. They will be in charge for logistics preparation and realization of the festival. Daily work
depends of the day but it won't be longer then 3- 4 hours. Also, volunteers will have creative
workshops and will prepare short artistic performance which will be part of the festival's program. A:
Volunteers will be accommodated in student's dormitory near the centre of Bitola. Showers and toilets

The national park Pelister is one of beautiful mountains on the Balkan and is located in the southwestern part of the Republic of Macedonia, on the northern side of the Baba massif. It covers 11.000
ha and its altitude ranges from 890 m to 2.601 m at the peak of Mt Pelister. South of this peak, two
glacial lakes are located: Malo Ezero (Small lake) (2.180m) and Golemo Ezero (Big lake) (2.218m),
widely known as the Eyes of Pelister. W: Volunteers will enjoy on 1200m altitude working on the Nize
Pole work camp on reconstruction of primary school which is in very bad condition. Work will be
painting the inside walls, doors, fixing the inventory and making the schoolyard more creative. Daily

the period of school holidays. The children are aged between 10 and 15 years old and the scheme is
open to 40 children per one camp. These children are with the special needs and come in camp with
theirs pedagogues and coaches. W: The international volunteers work together with staff (educators,
organizers, a nurse and a doctor) and Serbian volunteers from pedagogical faculty to provide the
summer camp activities. The volunteers will help supervise the group of children participate doing a
variety of indoor and outdoor activities (arts, field studies of local biodiversity and environment, crafts
and games) and outdoor sports events and excursions. Volunteers will supervise the children, help them
develop their English language skills but also conduct some workshops for children on their own.

The Special Nature Reserve Zasavica, covering 671 ha, is located west of Belgrade, along the Sava
River. This is one of the reserves with strongest management system and in last five years it is
organising very successful international voluntary workcamps. The river ecosystem, surrounded by the
fragments of marshes, hygrophilous forests and meadows, dominates the area. It is characterized by the
presence of rare and endemic species of animals, being endangered not only in Serbia but also in
Europe, such as the fish Umbra krameri and other. However, the area has some ecological problems,
mostly due to the negative impact of humans. W: The volunteers will clean reserve Zasavica from
plastic bottles and other waste. They will row the boats, collect the floating waste and take it out on the
bank. Volunteers will also help in making and bird houses. A: In the house on the bank of the lake with
several – bed – rooms. LA English. LO: Zasavica (www.zasavica.org.yu) is located one hour by bus

The program of cleaning and sanitation of Zlot canyon, Lazar’s and Vernjikica caves, riverbanks will

project is to clean the entrance of the canyon and caves, prepare them again for tourist use and protect
them from further destruction. W: In cooperation with local residents volunteers will clean Zlot

the city of Kosjeric. The work will be done in teams. Every member of a team is asked to suggest an
idea, participate in selecting the team’s solution and work on it together with other members. A: Local

Belgrade. Special Requirements: Volunteers are expected to have basic paint art skills. Experience at
wall painting is a plus, but not necessary. The most probable technique used will be acrylic façade

and prepare a short play, based on the folklore material from their different countries. During the
process, participants will interact following the material they have been supposed to prepare
beforehand (see: Requirements). Performing of the play will take place in Kosjeric. A: Local host
families. LA English. LO: Kosjeric, small town in western Serbia, 150 km from Belgrade. T: Belgrade.
Special requirements: Volunteers do not have to be professionals necessarily. Participants should
prepare a short sketch or performance (duration: 2 – 3 minutes) based on the folklore of the country
where they come from. The stress shouldn’t be on any common or universally accepted folklore
motive(s). Volunteers should work on a material which affects them as individuals, but at the same
time is connected to their culture. The theme can as well be a song one sings while tiding the room, a
story, a poem, or a fairy tale one can find while reading books on traditional culture. It is preferred that
the way of performing is mostly based on music and/or dance/movement: volunteers could sing a song,
play a piece on an instrument, make a dramatization, and perform a short choreography… One may
even bring an object in relation to which one would create a sketch, song, dance, etc. Special remarks:

Obedska Bara, an oxbow lake surrounded with marsh and forest habitats, is famous as an ornithological
reserve. It is one of the oldest protected areas in the world and a wetland of international importance
(listed as a Ramsar site). Wetlands are among the worlds most threatened ecosystems and this one has
been gravely degraded, the most important problem being the overgrowing and disappearance of wet
meadows. W: Volunteers will be included in the project of wet meadows revitalization by removing
tree branches and clearing other vegetation. This will be the ninth camp we organize here; so far
because of our activities several bird species have returned and the working site has the richest bird
fauna in the reserve. A: in the hotel “Obedska bara”. Food will be provided in the hotel restaurant. LA

protected as an area of extraordinary natural values. Unfortunately, this area is neglected and most of

Deliblatska pescara (Deliblato Sands) used to be a real small desert some 150 years ago, when most of
its area (approx. 300 km2) was forested to prevent sand from further spreading by the wind. However,
some of its habitats remained untouched and are under protection as special nature reserves. Its
precious natural resources have not been used sufficiently for educational purposes. This camp is the
continuation of activities of the Young researchers of Serbia on revitalizing areas of Deliblato Sands.
W: The volunteers will assist in construction of the house – an information point at the entrance to this
protected area and renovation of forest paths. A: In a house. Bring sleeping bag and mat.LA English

Environmental association “Bastara” is organising voluntary workcamps since 2003 in old village
Brdjani, 3km from Ljubovija. Ljubovija is small town near beautiful river Drina in the western part of
the country, on the border with Bosnia. There is permanent tension to decrease number of population in
this town and surroundings. Association is trying to promote eco – tourism and organic agriculture, and
to offer some new reason to people from this region to stay in this marginalized part of Serbia in
industrial sense, but the part who has a preserved and beautiful nature. In an an old 5 ha farm, you’ll
meet each others culture, customs… exchange experiences, learn one from another and all together
from nature. W: Volunteers will help to renovate of old farm houses, collect fruits and make home
made juices and jams, cleaning and cutting vegetation, take part in clean – up action (collecting

The camp will take place in Valjevo, a little town of approximately 70.000 inhabitants, located in
western Serbia. Local NGO, Research Society “Vladimir Mandic – Manda”, on its 35th anniversary
presented an idea of reconstructing their old premises and making Valjevo’s YOUTH CENTER,
located on banks of the city river, whose construction and functioning will organize themselves with
help of donators. Last year a voluntary workcamp was organized, with the theme of helping “raising”
this building, in many ways, doing promotional work, distributing leaflets and of course doing real
“hard” work on construction site, which was very successful. This year Research Society decided to
repeat the camp with the same aim – let’s make this building. W: Together with members of research
society and local volunteers participants will help “rising” this building, in many ways, from
promotional campaign (distributing leaflets, designing web page, etc), organizing press – conferences,
to helping professional workers on the construction site. A: The participants will be provided with

Palic Zoo (Zoo Animal Enrichment and Development of the Wildlife Rescue Center) is a small
zoological garden located in Palic, a village near Subotica. Subotica is a town at the north of Serbia
near Hungarian border. The process of modernization of the Palic Zoo has started few years ago by
broadening the mission onto nature conservation and improvement the standards for keeping wild
animals in captivity. In all activities we try to increase active participation of schools and specialized
group as well as general public. W: Volunteers will be included in activities on improvement of the
Wildlife Rescue Centre namely, building a railing barrier (cca. 200 m) around the enclosures for sick,
injured and orphaned wildlife and preparing an artificial pond for waterfowls. We will also construct
different enrichment objects and devices for wild animals in the Zoo like special feeders, toys, artificial

The project: The International Festival of Folklore Srem Folk Fest (www.sremfolkfest.org.yu) is
organized by Cultural Centre Sirmiumart (www.sirmiumart.org.yu) under the patronage of Local
Municipality. The aim of the Festival is cherishing and promoting of culture and tradition of all nations
of the world by singing, dancing, music and costumes.
Work: Volunteers will actively participate in organization, preparation, and promotion of the festival,
and during the festival you will be in charge of one folklore group and help them during the festival
(you will be a kind of guide for them). The work is divided into two phases: preparation (first six days)
and realization (next four days). During the preparation phase, you will prepare a performance, which
will be presented one day before the festival.

Neighbour, a team of psychologists and teachers. There is a park nearby, perfectly suitable for outside

Project description: For the first time we organize an international work camp in partnership with the
secondary Agricultural School from small village in Vojvodina called Futog. This activity aims at
upgrading the value of the site by welcoming the international volunteers in order to work on the
valorization of historical wealth and to create an attractive image of the school and the village itself.
This project is particularly aiming at the supporting of the local youth activism and wonderful
opportunity of exchanges with the youth from foreign countries.
Futog is small village with a rich and interesting history wealth. Work will be organized in the old
baroque-classictic Castle of Lord Chotec, built in the middle of the 18th sentury, where is Secondary
Agricultural School located today. It is famous by the fact that it belonged to a family of Sofia Chotek,
wife of Great Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and this is the place where they resided few days
before Sarajevo Attempt. W: The castle has great history and lot of mysteries which have been lately
discovered. It the castle there is big basement with old dungeons and secret tunnels. Our main work
will be renovating this basement and transforming it into club for school pupils and small museum and
making the short movie about castle's history. On the school's property there is a big park, great sport
fields and a agricultural economy with lot of fields and animals, so volunteer's job will be also some
cleaning in the park and helping with making a small Panonean zoo and taking care about animals.
Work will be 5-6 hours. Weekends are free. A: Volunteers will be lodged in the Internat of secondary
Agricultural School, located nearby, in dormitories with beds, showers and toilets. No need for
sleeping bags. All meals will be served in the school canteen. LO: Futog is small village situated on the
left bank of river Danube, on the middle of its course. It is located near the city of Novi Sad, capital of
province of Vojvodina. Study part: Located few kilometers from Novi Sad you will have many
opportunities for visits and excursions for discovering treasures of this lovely town and its sights. There
is Danube and its bridges, Petrovaradin fortress, Restaurants with local traditional food and music,
museums, EXIT music festival, Novi Sad Fair, and much, much more...With 350,000 citizens, Novi
Sad is the second largest city in Serbia. However in terms of some global criterions, it is considered to
be a smaller town. Not too big, not too small 'just enough', we like to say. Two hours may be enough to

Project description: Koviljsko-petrovaradinski rit, marshland on the left bank of the Danube River, is
protected as a Special Nature Reserve on the basis of its great nature values. The Rit looks like small
rainforest in the Panonian Valley and abounds in strings, channels, swamps and deserted beds. It has
great significance for preservation of habitants of different flora and fauna and its biocenosis. This
beautiful nature reserve protects many rare animals, birds and fishes. The village is well known by one
of the Europe's largest populations of black and white storks and for the relics of rainforest, yellow and
white water lilies. Koviljsko-petrovaradinski rit is IBA Important Bird Area of international
significance, and it will be suggested for Ramsar list of wetlands of international importance. One of
the curiosities of the village is the Monastery of Kovilj built in 12th century dedicated to St.
Archangels. This is the second largest monastery in Serbia, and it gives great opportunity to meet with
Serbian culture and history. This workcamp is part of the project of Nature Conservation Bureau of
Serbia, department in Novi Sad, for improvement of quality of protection of this nature area,
revitalization of marsh ecosystems and
advancement of biodiversity, which were degraded by
inappropriate human behavior. One of the aims of this project is also promotion of this Special Nature
Reserve, incentive for development of ecotourism and preservation of tradition and customs of local
inhabitants. W: This project involves and focuses on environmental conservation work within a nature
reserve. Most of the work will be outdoors so this is a perfect project for nature lovers and all
volunteers used to be outside! For the first week volunteers will work on project of revitalization of
Kurjacka greda, one part of the reserve. The work will mainly include various activities in the forest:
cutting and clearing unwanted grass and bushes, burning old tree brunches and brushwood and cleaning

waste material which threatens original vegetation. The working place is located in the forest and
volunteers every day will have transportation to the work place. On the second week of the workcamp
volunteers will help in preparation of local village and monastery celebration of village patron St.
Archangel Mihailo, which is traditionally held every year on the 26th of July. Work will include
cleaning and arranging the area around the monastery, setting up stalls for exhibition of old handicrafts
aiming at promotion of culture and tradition of local people. A: Accommodation in a youth eko centre

Project description: Becej is typical, multinational town in Vojvodina, more than 900 years old,
situated on right bank of river Tisa. There are a numerous cultural-historical monuments. What is
special in Becej is number of trees and parks which are made spontaneously from breeding ground's
growing by time into the city recreation zone. Because it was made more from enthusiasm rather than
professionalism, they are suffering from numerous faults. It lacks of appropriate recreation area,
playgrounds, place for learning about nature and place for cultural and educative purpose. Workcamps
have been organized in Becej parks for few years and for this year it is planned that volunteers work on
renovation of one of its parks, called "Upper park" (Gornji park). W: Volunteers will work on
redesigning and reconstruction of the "Upper Park" and its green surfaces. Also, volunteers will install
new garbage bins and reconstruct old ruined benches. Work will be consisting of suspending small
garbage dumps, reclamation of old dry and ill trees. Daily work will be 5-6 hours, weekends are free.
Afternoon activities will be arranged among the agreement with volunteers. A: Volunteers will sleep in
the tents, in the biggest "Goranski Park". Sleeping bags are necessary. Toilettes and showers are

organization consisting of: Ruma City Theatre, Scouts, Literature Youth, Art association, Society of
multimedia avangarde, Cancer prevention society and JAZAS youth-society for AIDS prevention.
Fruska Gora Mountain surrounded by numerous monasteries and protected areas of nature. Ruma City
Theatre is establisher of the Trema festival (www.tremafest.co.yu) which is in the end of the March
happening in Ruma for the 10th time. This international theater festival of multicultural activities and
youth projects offers numerous entertaining and educative programs. Good results from the workcamp
organized last year encouraged organizers to continue tradition and organize it this year for the second
time. W: Volunteers will work on preparation and realization of two theatre performances of the Ruma
City Theatre for the 11th TREMA fest-Cinderella puppet play and ambient rock and roll forum-theatre.
Also they will work on improvement of technical, video product ional and creative conditions for the
work of the art TREMA studio, painting of the walls and stage, setting up the stage, making pults for
presentations, making and updating theatre documentation, press clipping, making videos and photos

for the documentation. After preparation of planned performances we will form Mobil Art Trema
project (performances, show and presentations) which will b used as a presentation in partner cities:
Novi Sad, Karlovci, Stara Pazova, during their summer festivals. A movie about Art workcamp with
the short performance we will present within the traditional Ruma Fair and afterwards on the opening
on the opening of Trema Fest in March 2008. The movie will include inserts from all parts of

Morovic is surrounded by wonderful forests and a network of canals, but despite the natural beauty, the
riverbanks have been neglected and ignored by local people. There is a general feeling of disinterest

among the village people towards the problems and the potentials of the local community. We hope to

W: Cleaning the riverbanks, collecting garbage, making trashcans and helping with the preparation of a
small local music festival that takes place at the end of the camp.
S: Workshops on using renewable sources of energy, introduction to local folklore and dances, visits to
the nearby nature reserve (with 400 years old oak trees), historical and cultural sights. There will be
plenty of opportunity to socialise with the local people: sport activities, rowing and swimming in the
river, competition in preparing traditional fish stew, etc.
A: A local ecological organization has transferred two used railway coaches to the riverbank and rearranged them as a sleeping place, an office and a cafeteria. Volunteers will be placed there. Please

This is a follow-up to the last year’s camp in the same location. It will cover Gruza Lake, Borachka
River and Borachka mountains. The aim of the camp is to determine the number and diversity of
natural species, determine the quality of the water in the lake and promote natural and ethno-social

W: According to interest, volunteers will work in sections – hydrobiological, entomological, botanical
and ornithological. Every section will gather data in its field.
S: Workshops on nature conservation and volunteerism in general. There will be visits to the unique
site of nature, the Borac Rock, the medieval town of Borac and the orthodox monastery Kamenac, to
the local Eco-house, kayak club and sports centre on Ibar River, nearby towns and other interesting
places.

Gornje Podunavlje, the area around Backi Monostor, is a mosaic of forests, wet and dry meadows,
alluvial lakes, oxbows, ponds and marshes formed by the Danube and its formerly active meanders.
Third workcamp is going to be continuation of activities on habitat restoration projects and tourism

W: we will continue to work on habitat restoration, which includes cutting and removing of hawthorns.
Cleaning includes cutting hawthorn bushes and removing them from the meadows. Simultaneously, we
will make bird houses, which are going to set up around the village to create environmental friendly
image, and also some tourist signs. Also, volunteers will take part in preparation of the local ethno fest.

Bicycle is really popular in Becej as a transporting vehicle. Even in “old” Yugoslavia, Becej was the
place with the highest number of bicycles per capita. There is an initiative from local municipality and
local tourist organisation for bicycle to become a souvenir and trademark of Becej. This workcamp
should improve the idea and set things on a higher level by creating 30 new bicycles out of old ones.

W: Volunteers will work on reparation, reforming and repairing the old bicycles, their promotion,
riding them around the town... Volunteers will also be involved in preparation of intercultural evenings
in the park, parties, and film projections.
S: Various workshops, pool and Tisa river visits, excursions by bikes to »Fantast« lake and castle and
the nearby town Novi Becej. Volunteers will visit orthodox and catholic churches, cultural centre and
town hall.
A: Workcamp will be situated in the centre of the biggest park in Becej, under the tents. Sleeping bags

Ruski Krstur (population: 5000) is the largest settlement of the Ruthenian (also called Rusyn) national
minority in the Balkans. Young people in this village have had very few opportunities to express
themselves in a creative or a constructive way and they are not aware of the possibilities that voluntary
work can open to them. Next to the village, there is an old Backa canal with a water gate which has
been turned into an open swimming pool. By arranging and developing the ground around it, we could
turn it into space for sport, cultural and recreational events and motivate local young people to get

W: Arranging the space around the pool: setting up a small bungalow made of sedge, painting the
fences and light posts, cutting bushes and grass, making a mini-football court, and helping in setting up
the stage for a rock concert.
S: Introduction to the Rusyn culture: making dolls of corn stalks and straw, visiting the local
sacramental temple, church and the museum of Rusyn lifestyle, folklore presentations. There will also
be workshops on flower arrangement and making china and wood ornaments.
A: In a dormitory of a local school, all facilities provided, sleeping bags are not necessary.

People of Serbian, Roma, Hungarian and Slovakian nationalities live in Novi Becej in relative peace,
but are not aware of the multicultural values of their local society. They are not using its potential for
intercultural communication. On the contrary, the level of xenophobia has been increased during the
stressful 1990s. This workcamp is organized in order to encourage the population of Novi Becej to
engage in intercultural communication and accept and embrace the differences among them. You can

W: International and local volunteers will together create works of art related to the workcamp topic of
“Being different is not bad”. This includes developing and carrying out a street performance and
painting a mural. During the camp, a local volunteer will shoot an educational film about the topic.
S: There will be extensive workshops on issues of intercultural learning, group and teamwork, theatre
of the oppressed, etc. Representatives of local nationalities will present their cultures and traditions.
Volunteers will cook traditional meals from their countries and compile them in a little book of

have its own flag! The idea of the workcamp is to gather volunteers and to promote flags of their
countries, sport clubs, regions in their countries and also to initiate the idea for design of flag of Becej.
Volunteers will have opportunity to make the flags of their ideas, ideals, of workcamp, and to set up the

W: Volunteers will work on creating, sewing, preparing applications for the flags, preparing exhibition
of them and participation with exhibition on the traditional summer festival of sport and music.

Despotovac is a small town (around 5000 people) in Central Serbia. There is a cinema hall is situated in
the town centre. This cinema is out of use for the past 10 years because its reconstruction was never

W: Volunteers will work on clearance of the old cinema hall, painting the inside and outside walls
murals and enhancing surroundings, as well as reconstruction of old theatre stage. It will include hard
manual labour on some activities while it will need extensive creativity on others.
S: Free time will be filled with art workshops, workshops on different issues. Basketball and small
football courts will be available. All the interesting nearby sites will be included in tours during the free
time.

Bac is the oldest town in the Vojvodinian western region, which has been called Backa, after the town.
There are the remains of an old fortress that is being archeologically explored, and it is an important
part of Vojvodinian historical heritage. Despite these facts, the city park in Bac is in terrible condition.
