Parád town is located in the centre of Palóc rural village, where are a number of ethnographic and cultural-historical value. A neighborhood schools, kindergartens are living in worse financial circumstances, and we want to help the children. The reception center is in a very idyllic countryside place and located about 40 kilometers west from Helsinki. Even though the most common services are quite far, you can find for example a spa quite nearby in the middle of the Finnish nature! Type of Work: Spending time with the children in the reception center, organizing activities like games or excursions in groups. Outdoor work and gardening. Helping with organizing a Midsummer's Eve party for the inhabitants. Doing a big clean-up for the house and working in the kitchen. The Center was founded in 1987 on the territory of the former duke’s estate. On the territory of the Center there is a pond with a lot of fish – so you can go fishing there. There also are stables with 12 horses, a riding school for children. The camp hosts about 200 children at a time. The camp works by the program of the summer English language school. Type of Work: Each volunteer will be accommodated together with one Ukrainian leader in the camp next to children rooms. The main task of the volunteers will be to help in organising everyday life of the camp and leisure time activities, such as workshops, sport competitions, contests, activities connected with culture, history, traditions of the volunteers’ countries. The volunteers will also assist teachers in teaching English in the course of lessons. Volunteers will not be provided with a ready plan for the lessons or activities. In 2002 the brown bear (Ursus arctos) refuge was founded and today the village hosts more than 20 000 visitors and 200 volunteers per year. Besides the bear refuge, the volunteer station was founded as a place for cultural exchange and sustainable living education. This workcamp have two main goals: improve the quality of natural areas around the village of Kuterevo for wild fauna and allow a team of volunteers to live in the wild and learn about nature. Type of Work: In Velebit, local wild life suffers from a lack of water, because the karstic ground. Also, most of the open fields slowly become forests because less traditional grazing with livestock. In this way all specific species of mountain meadows disappear. So we will work on one of two projects: • creating water pools for animals in the forest in order to improve the quality of natural habitats or • working on pasture restoration in the borders of grasslands and cut bushes and trees which are growing up in the field boundaries. Volunteers will also build wooden birds, bats and insects houses. Study Theme: Because the goal of the workcamp is to act for nature conservation, volunteers will have the opportunity to learn about the wilderness of Velebit and nature (botany, ornithology, mammology, geology…). As well the way of living, during these two weeks, will be an authentic occasion to learn about lifestyle close to nature. Accommodation: Volunteers will sleep in tents, cook on fire, take shower in the forest and…shit in compost toilets! The camp has a drinkable water point, but nobody should hope any kind of comfortable bathroom. Tents will be provided. Sleeping bags necessary. Participants need to keep in mind that they will live in a mountain climate area, were even in the middle of the summer the night can be truly cold. It aims at making injustices visible and training people to struggle against it. This year SCI Belgium organizes a workcamp around that theatre form, more particularly the forum theatre. Type of Work: The workcamp will be an 8-day workshop about gender issue, gathering 10 participants, from different social and cultural backgrounds, half Belgian, half international. It will end with a performance of forum theatre. The members of the audience will become actors: we will invite them to come on stage, propose some actions and perform them in order to test them. This performance will allow us to exchange with a broad audience our views around gender issues. Study Theme: Gender issues, inequalities between men and women, representations we have about the roles of men/women and the influence it can have on our lives. Accommodation: International Volunteers will be accomodated in one appartment in the city centre of Brussels. The goal is to make all the stations along this railway “cultural stations” with different cultural contents and offers, and to make the surrounding forest more available for people by building paths and bicycle roads connecting the stations. Type of Work: Building a mobile stage, help renovating the kiosk in the station building and the garage for the rail tricycle. Work includes clearing the path to the station, building small bridges and getting benches in place, as well as preparation of signs. As this is a cultural station, there will also be possible to work with cultural activities which can be performed on the last night (theatre, dance, music, etc). During the last 8 years the festival has offered master classes and concerts with nation- and worldwide known artists.
