ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES
ART CLUB Art Club is a compulsory activity for those students involved
in the exam years of IGCSE, AS and A2 Art and Design. It is also open
to Form 4 students. The reason for it is simple; to make an art work
takes a long time – it is seen as imperative that students who have
chosen to sit the exams use this time in lieu of homework, which is not
always practical to do at home.
ASL CLUB (American Sign Language Club) Learn a new language
and a completely new way to communicate. In ASL we learn the
alphabet, greetings, vocabulary, songs and about deaf culture. This
enrichment is all about learning something new in a fun way, and
you might be surprised when it will come in handy or where it could
take you in the future.
BAAF (Botswana Amateur Arts Festival) is an exciting vibrant Drama
Festival held at Maitisong in September. Write your own 35 to 40
minute play, design a set for it, direct it and finally stage it to a live
audience and a panel of judges. The judges (theatre experts and
drama practitioners) will assess and critique each play and finally
state a winner. There are various awards to be won e.g. Best Actor,
Best Actress, Best Set Design, Best Cameo Role, Best Stage
Management, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best
Advert for a Play, Best Original Script and Best Original Play.
BBH This activity involves looking after the place where the boys live.
The boys in the Boarding House sign up for it because it is an internal
activity. The service involves communal work such as cleaning, minor
maintenance and the general upkeep of the BBH. Students are
expected to use their initiative in making sure that the House is kept
clean. The service operates on a flexi-time basis; the boys can be
called on at any time convenient to them.
BIBLE CLUB is an open discussion group where students are
encouraged to look into the scriptures and find out how Christian
values such as love, peace and care could help shape their lives. It is
hoped that this club will encourage students to practise these values
in their day to day lives through their words, actions and character,
and build on their faith.
BIKE MECHANICS In this activity a small group of students will travel to
The Bike Shop and learn bike mechanics and how to maintain a
bicycle. Unlike last term, students will not keep the bike at the end of
the term. This term we will focus on much more advanced
mechanics and understanding how to adjust your bike so it is a fast
and flying machine!
BOOK CLUB Are you adventurous, and do you hunger for knowledge
about the world and people? We quench both thirsts. For the avid
reader, this is your calling. Share your insights and feelings with
kindred spirits every Friday afternoon.
BRIDGE
is a thinking person’s card game enjoyed by millions of
people of all ages around the world. If you enjoy communicating
with a partner, working out probabilities, practising deception and
have good powers of recall, then this is the club for you. At MAP we
teach newcomers how to play and improve the play of ‘old timers’.
CHESS allows students to pit their wits against one another by playing
this ancient board game. Whether you are an old-hand, or still
wearing L-plates, you are most welcome to come to play and help
us improve our skills.
CLAY CLUB We make mostly utility items from clay. Once dry, these
items are fired then glazed and then fired again. It is a slow process
and usually a whole term is required for one complete making cycle.
COOKERY Cookery is an enjoyable and productive activity, a lesson
in which everyone participates and shares ideas and opinions on
how things should be done. We make a variety of foods ranging
from exciting exotic dishes to interesting traditional meals. We do it
because we love cooking and trying out new foods…maybe some
of us will even pursue a career in the food industry. There is a very
easy-going atmosphere, with laughter, chatting and telling jokes as
we work. The best part is when the cooking is done and it is time to
dig in!
COMPUTER PROGRAMMING
Students will acquire programming
skills using Microsoft Visual Basic, and will be able to write, edit and
test Windows applications in Maths, Accounts and Science to name
a few. Projects include; Payroll System, Inventory Control System,
Students Information System among others. They may choose to
write an exam set by the Computer Society of South Africa,
sponsored by Old Mutual.
CONVERSATIONAL CHINESE will be run by Ms Tan from the Confucius
Institute at UB. With her Masters Degree in Chinese as a second
language, expect well-organised lessons and a lot of fun.
CREATIVE WRITING
Are you the next JK Rowling? Or would you just
like to be a better writer, and develop skills that will benefit your
whole life? Come to Creative Writing with Mr. Hoosain and Mr.
Hagger, where you will learn to shape and share your ideas with
other writers. Get writing!
DEBATING MATTERS Debating Matters offers a fresh, accessible and
engaging format for debating contemporary issues. The competition
has successfully pioneered a format for debate that takes ideas,
argument and young people seriously. The focus is on content and
substance over style, encouraging young people to engage in an
intelligent contest of ideas and holding up their ideas to critical
scrutiny. Debating Matters believes that young people are intelligent
and robust enough to have their ideas held up to critical scrutiny by
adults, and tough enough to defend their ideas. Are you up to the
challenge?
DEBATING: Every week a group of students assemble in the airconditioned L-Rooms to discuss and debate a wide range of topics.
In addition to increasing awareness of contemporary issues, students
also sharpen their critical faculties (and they certainly have a great
deal of fun, too!)
DECOUPAGE
We have broadened our decoupage from working
only with glass, to include wood. This creative process can change
ordinary items into colourful, decorative pieces.
ECONOMICS CLUB The idea is to have a less formal environment than
the classroom to discuss economic theories and their application in
the real world. The students have the opportunity to apply what they
have learnt, make informed decisions, and evaluate policy issues.
This will help them to understand the importance of the subject in
light of globalisation.
e-BUSINESS CLUB Students learn from case studies how business
activity impacts on the environment, what businesses are doing to
become more responsible due to changes in technology and
government legislation. They research globalisation and how it has
affected local economies and businesses. Students also interact first
hand with a retired businessperson to learn about their
characteristics, and the challenges that are faced by
entrepreneurs.
FILM CLUB From the page to the projector! This Enrichment will take
place on Wednesdays from 2.15 until 3.15pm in the AV Centre. We
will watch plays and novels that have been made into films. From
Shakespeare to Dickens to Suzanne Collins, over the course of the
SPE sessions, be prepared to discover the stories told in great
Literature!
IGCSE DRAMA All students who are registered for IGCSE Drama in
Form 4 and 5 are required to sign up for this enrichment activity in
the afternoon to ensure that they have enough teaching and
practice time for a course that is completed two terms earlier than
others. Students are required to attend two, two-hour sessions per
week.
IGCSE MUSIC All students who are registered for Cambridge
University IGCSE Music in Form 5 are required to sign up for IGCSE
MUSIC in the afternoon programme. This ensures that they have
enough teaching and practice time for a course that is completed
two terms earlier than other IGCSE courses.
INTER-HOUSE PLAYS Are you a talented performer, writer, designer or
director? You want a chance to show your talents on stage? Well…
the Inter-House Drama Play Festival is here, and it is giving students
an opportunity to represent their house in the arts!
JUNIOR SCHOOL PRODUCTION This is an inventive, dynamic
production by Form 1, 2 and 3 students for primary school audiences.
The project will teach students about play production, including
performance, management, design, marketing and audience
relationship. Students may be required to attend a few structured
evening rehearsals the week prior to performance.
JUNK’T COMITY A group of students meet every week to discuss fund
raising methods for an event that will be held at the end of the term.
Skills to be learnt involve; advertising methods, marketing and
design, fund raising and working as a team.KALAHARI QUILTS After
the enthusiastic reception of the Library Centre wall-hanging, the
founder of Kalahari Quilts and MaP alum, Jenny Healy, is starting an
enrichment activity that creates patchworked and quilted artworks.
With winter fast approaching there is also the idea of producing
quilts for orphaned children.
MAP’s PAL (Promotion of the Arabic Language) We will use a course
designed by the University of Medina designed for non-Arabic
speakers. We will concentrate on improving students’ vocabulary
and understanding of the Arabic language.
MARIMBAS
This enrichment activity engenders self-discipline, the
development of intellectual and physical dexterity, and emotional
skills. The programme rewards participants with enjoyment and fun.
For a few, the crown comes when they perform for VIPs outside the
school, or when they are selected to represent MAP and the country
on marimba cultural exchanges.
MATHS, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY CLUB This club aims at helping
students use their Science, Mathematics and Technology skills
acquired in the classroom to solve real life problems. They will be
given opportunities to be innovative. The students will also have
fascinating experiences related to Mathematics, Science and
Information Technology. Activities include; Designing Solar and
electronic devices, educational presentations on Maths and Science
to share with the school at assemblies and Maths/Science week,
educational trips for fascinating Maths and Science experiences.
Learning is not complete until the skills acquired are used to solve a
real problem
MUSICAL INSTRUMENT TUITION Students may take recorder, flute,
clarinet, singing, trumpet, trombone, sax, and piano and music
theory lessons in preparation for entry for Associated Board and
Trinity exams. Instruments are available for rent from the Music
Department.
MUSIC THEORY This activity is for all students, beginners and exam
candidates, following the Trinity Guildhall syllabus.
ORCHESTRA
The Orchestra meets once a week for two hours.
Anyone who has a reasonable level of competency on their
instrument may join. All instruments are welcome. We play various
styles of music. The main aims of Orchestra are to encourage
students to play together and encourage happy music-making, as
well as to provide the opportunity for the beginners to learn from the
more advanced students, and to give at least one public
performance per term.
POETRY CLUB Explore the world of renowned classic and modern
poetry at Poetry Club sessions on Wednesday afternoons. We
resurrect worlds and “suck the marrow out of life” at these
gatherings. For the advanced and perceptive reader.
SAT CHEMISTRY On Monday afternoons, Mr Noble will attempt to
unravel the mysteries of SAT Chemistry. The course will involve going
through topics not taught at AS or A2 Chemistry, but which do
appear regularly on the SAT II paper. Topics such as Entropy and
logic will be covered. The course is designed to be taken by sixth
form students considering SAT II. Exam practise will form part of the
activity.
SCHOOL PRODUCTION What started as whispers in the Drama
Department corridors between the two drama teachers has finally
materialized. The School Production for 2013 is Spiderman and the
Voodoo Master: Rumble in the Jungle. This can take the place of
two activities, as rehearsals are Monday through Thursday. For Form 4
and up, it can even be a service, as you will be teaching the
younger students.
SCIENCE, MATHS, AND TECHNOLOGY CLUB If you believe that
learning is not complete until the skills acquired are used to solve a
real problem then this is the club for you. We will have fascinating
experiences related to Mathematics, Science and Information
Technology as we design math and scientific artefacts, prepare
educational presentations on Maths and Science innovations
around the world to share with the school, and take educational
trips for fascinating Maths and Science experiences.
SCRABBLE This is a friendly, non-competitive game for students of all
abilities as we get together to hone our scrabble skills and develop
new ones. Scrabble is a great game for people who love words,
puzzles, and friendly competition!
VERBAL EMANCIPATION is about creating poetry and songs and
expressing oneself through writing. We put together a show each
year of our writing and use the proceeds to purchase toiletries for
less privileged teens in government secondary schools. This activity is
a wonderful way to express yourself through writing and contribute
to the community in a meaningful way.
WEATHER RECORDS Our aim is to record and keep a daily school
weather record. The students will visit the school weather station to
record the weather and post this information on the school notice
board. The data will be input into Metlink. Weather forecasts for
Botswana and the region will be searched from the Internet and
other sources so that the school community is kept up to date on the
weather front.
WEBSITE AUTHORING CLUB In today’s world, the Internet is part of our
lives. We surf the Net every day by visiting various websites, but do
we know how these websites are created? If you want to know more
about web page design and development, then this is your club.
Remember that the club is not for surfing the Net but rather
designing and developing web pages for ourselves and others. Club
members will learn how to create a structured website with style
sheets, tables, hyperlinks and incorporate basic dynamic features
using Web Page Authoring facilities. After acquiring the basic skills,
members should be prepared to tackle Web Page Authoring
projects of their own. It is open to students from Form 1 up.
ZUMBA AND DANCE A fusion of Latin American dance styles with
African and Dancehall freestyle movements. The lessons aim to
teach movements, steps and choreography. Zumba will also be
included as a warm-up section at the beginning of every class.
