Assignment: Evaluating Personality Assessments
For this assignment you will complete and evaluate two of the online personality assessments which
are available on the UL Careers and Destinations® website. (You may need to print off the results)
Personality assessments offer different ways of finding out more about yourself. They are often
erroneously and misleadingly called 'tests', but there is no such thing as a good or bad result, and it is
not possible to pass or fail. They can be a useful tool in career planning.
The following four personality assessments are available for you to choose from:
 The Type Dynamics Indicator Personality Test
http://www.ul.ie/careers/careers/applications/psycho.shtml#online

This assessment is used to explore how your preferences relate to work styles, communication,
and team roles. This facility is restricted to the UL campus and is free to UL students.
(Otherwise you would be parting with a few hundred euro to do this test!) You will be asked for
brief personal details and a contact e-mail address. (It is important that you use your UL email
address if you want to receive a report). You can then begin the personality test called the
Type Dynamics indicator.
 Holland test –Which Type am I? (BBC Careers Test)
http://www.ul.ie/careers/destinations/student/content/Destinations/units/unit-p011.shtml
 John Holland researched the effects of personality upon career choice. His work focuses on
understanding how people choose careers and why they prefer some jobs over others. He
identified six personality types, all associated with work behaviours and working patterns.
 This assessment (BBC Careers Test) will help you to identify which type or types match you
best. The exercise will take about ten minutes. Because of the nature of the questions asked in
this particular assessment, it will be most applicable if you expect to work in an office
situation.
 Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) (The Jung Typology Test)
http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes1.htm
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a way of assessing your personality and finding out about your
preferred or most natural ways of behaving. Investigating the behaviour which comes most naturally to
you can help you to understand your preferences for certain situations as well as the way in which you
interact with others.
 Prospects Planner: (What jobs would suit me?)
www.prospects.ac.uk this will help you to identify your skills and find out what motivates you in
a job; Click on Jobs and Work at the top of the home page and on the drop down menu, click on
‘What jobs would suit me?’ You’ll need to register on the Prospects website, but it’s free and will
only take a couple of minutes.
