Bio 220 Laboratory Fall 2010 The laboratory component of Bio 220 is a very significant and important part of this course. It will count for 30% of the final 220 course grade, and attendance at assigned laboratories is mandatory. There is no laboratory textbook but handouts will be available before the assigned lab. Each student is required to carefully read the assigned laboratory hand out before each lab, and to summarize the experimental protocol in their lab notebook. Students are expected to arrive at each lab properly prepared with the reading completed and the experimental protocol properly summarized in the notebook. Required for the lab: 1. A dedicated lab notebook to record lab methods and data. 2. A lab coat needed to be worn in lab at all times. Laboratory Grade: The final laboratory grade will count for 1/3 of the Bio 220 final course grade. The laboratory grade will be determined as follows: Library Assignment……………………..… Graphic Assignment………………….…… Lab Report I………………………….….… Lab Report II……………………………… Lab Report III…………………………...… Group Project……………………………… Lab Notebooks…………………………….. 40 10 40 40 40 50 30 Total……………………………………...... 250 These grades will be adjusted to represent 30% of your final 220 course grade. Lab Reports: Bio 220 is no longer a writing emphasis course but significant importance will be placed on the clear written communication of scientific ideas. Proper grammar, spelling, and logical clear expression is important. All Lab Reports are typically due 2-3 weeks following the performed laboratory exercise. Due dates are to be strictly followed! A significant grade penalty will be imposed for each day that a report is handed in late. It is important for information to be expressed in a clear, concise fashion. Do NOT ramble on insufferably about irrelevant (albeit interesting) trivia just to fill up space. This is not welcome or appreciated by the grader. The organization of the Lab Report should include results and discussion sections. Lab reports will be graded as follows: Results ------------ 20 Discussion-------- 20 IT IS REQUIRED THAT ALL PARTS OF ALL LAB REPORTS BE TYPED AND DOUBLE SPACED!(This includes tables and calculations.) The most important aspect of the lab report grade will be the clarity and organization of expressed information Important Note: It is understood that members of the same research group will have equivalent data, and it is appropriate that research results will be discussed among group members, but it is NOT acceptable to xerox or otherwise use equivalent data graphics in lab reports. However, it is absolutely required that each individual student will submit their own original work (generating their own individual data graphs), and assume individual responsibility for sole authorship of each Lab Report. Any questions that potentially arise in regard to this policy should be carefully discussed with the instructor before submission to avoid any possible academic integrity issues, and their consequences.
