Networking Project Milestones and Objectives
The ultimate goal of this project is to redesign the network in the 114 MRC data center to
improve security and scalability.
Milestone 1 – Documentation of Existing Network Infrastructure and Inventory
Complete
Target Completion Date – February 20th, 2009
Objective 1 – Gain Understanding of Network Infrastructure
Objective 2 – Take Inventory of Current Hardware
Objective 3 – Document Layout of Current Network (Ie. Switches, servers,
external drops, etc)
Deliverables:
 Word document documenting current layout.
 Excel spreadsheet with up to date hardware inventory of the data center, Room
114 MRC
Milestone 2 – Requirements Gathering Complete
Target Completion Date – February 23rd, 2009
Objective – Gather network requirements
Deliverables:
 A document detailing the current, 1 year, and 3 year projections for network
requirements.
Milestone 3: Needs Analysis Complete
Target Completion Date – February 25th, 2009
Objective – Determine number of Networks
Objective – Determine if Networks will be Separate
Objective – Examine External Drops with our Requirements
Objective – Determine IP Addressing
Deliverables:
 A document detailing the answers to the above questions.
Milestone 4 – Network Research and Design Complete
Target Completion Date – March 6th, 2009
Objective – Research Current Hardware and Capabilities
Objective – Determine Which Hardware will be Reused/Retired
Objective – Research New Hardware
Objective – Determine New Hardware
Objective – Determine Which Network to Which Switch
Objective – Determine the overall layout of the new network
Deliverables:
 A document detailing the recommended network design and that addresses all of
the above areas.
 Presentation to all other systems administrators in the group for peer review.
 Revise design if required based on peer review.
 List of hardware to be purchased.
Milestone 5 – Create Detailed Upgrade Plan.
Target Completion Date – March 13th, 2009
Objective – Create a detailed list of the procedure involved with the upgrade
(include necessary networks changes as well as server side changes such as modifications
to ip addresses).
Objective – Approximate the amount of preparation time required for the upgrade
Objective – Approximate the resources required for implementation, including the
number of man hours
Objective – Detail the impact on production systems and the expected outage
window required for the upgrade.
Deliverables:
 A comprehensive upgrade document.
 Peer review of plan and revisions as required.
Milestone 6 – Completion of Network Upgrade
Target Completion Date – March 27th, 2009
Objective – Schedule time for upgrade
Objective – Notify users of impact
Objective – Execute upgrade plan
Deliverables:
 Successful execution of the upgrade plan.
