It’s amazing how many dads come out for pizza and pop? (smile and have fun with this)
Why did your dad used to come to school? What about your Granddad/ Great Granddad?
In our schools today, the rates of fatherless and unfathered children range from 35-75% of the student
population.
That means 35-75% of them are missing an important ingredient in there life.
Like many of you, I am a dad, with a job, just trying to make life work for my family.
Tonight, I am here to talk you guys, about a program I believe in. One that will raise the banner of fathering in
our home and our school.
I’D LIKE TO SHARE A TRUE STORY, THE STORY OF THE TITANIC

It started April 12th, 1912 on the maiden voyage of this mighty ship…the Titanic received a warning call of ice ahead

April 13th another report of ice

April 14th more reports of ice just 50 miles ahead

At 11:40 pm on April 14th Frederick Fleet in the lookout tower yells out “Iceberg right ahead”

37 seconds later the Titanic impacted the iceberg.

In 40 minutes, 16,000 cubic ft. of water entered the ship

April 15, 1912 2:18 am the Titanic went under.

In less than 3 hours the Titanic was gone and 1,500 people lost their lives
Those are the facts.
What’s the story within the story:
1. The Titanic received no less than 6 warnings of the ice field ahead. The final warning was sent out at
9:40 pm.
o What was the Titanic’s attitude? “it can’t happen to us, we’re unsinkable”
2. At 10 pm, lookouts Frederick Fleet and Reginald Lee came on duty, but they weren’t prepared. They manned
their positions without their most important piece of equipment, a set of binoculars-THE EYES OF THE
SHIP.
This mindset has repeated itself throughout history. WARNINGS WERE IGNORED, SO PREPARATION WAS
ALSO IGNORED.
ANOTHER TRUE STORY:

It was 1998, a dad was eating lunch with a principal and an unscheduled fire drill occurred, they thought. The
principal went to check on it and never came back.

Two boys, AGES 11 AND 13, pulled a fire alarm, ran outside, laid in a field, shot and killed four of their
classmates and a teacher and wounded 10 others while they exited school.

This TRUE story gave all of us another warning. It occurred in Jonesboro, AR just like it had in Littleton, Paduka
and other cities. In Jonesboro, Arkansas, the thought was “It would never happen here”.

The morning of the shootings it is estimated that less than 15% of the children were dropped off by their fathers
for school. The morning after the shootings, more than 80% were dropped off by their dads. Why?


That night, a vision was given to Jim Moore in Springdale, Arkansas.
Questions kept going through his mind:
o Where have all the fathers gone?
o Where was the leadership in these boy’s lives?
o Where can we plug men back in to our children’s lives?
From a tragedy, WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) was formed.
The Mission: Connect the hearts of Fathers to their Children and the children to their Fathers in school and beyond.
So what does the Day in A Life of a WatchDOG Dad look like? (See the Elementary and Secondary Daily
Schedules)
(share an overview of the daily schedule with heartbeat (stories about the different activities))
There are 3 winners when you have a successful WATCH D.O.G.S. program: 1. dads 2. students 3. school
1. The dads win because we know our role as a WatchDOG may impact many lives, stating with our own children.
2. The students win because the father and father-figures give their time and energy as a positive male role model.
3. The school wins due to the Support and Safety a WatchDOG provides as an unobtrusive fathering presence on
campus.
Expectations: In successful WATCH D.O.G.S. schools, there’s an expectation that you will see a Principal, Asst
Principal, Nurse, Secretary, and a WatchDOG Dad or two everyday at school.
Personal Life Stories: (real dad stuff)

The reality is, there are no PERFECT dads. Certainly, I am not.

My Mistakes (raising my voice to quickly, not giving my kids the talk time they need, Dads average 7 minutes a
week one- on-one with their kids)

Few Good Things that make a difference. Highpoints (first to cheer them on and give them the high five)

This is the story of OLYMPIAN Derrick Redmond, the 400 meter sprinter”
1988 Derrick ruptures his Achilles Tendon before the semifinals race during warm-ups –his Olympics were over.
1992 Derrick returns to the Olympics having undergone rigorous training to get back to his original form
He’s in the finals and the gun blows –
Derrick gets out of his blocks.
14 seconds later he falls to the ground in agony. Pain is all over his face.
He looks forward to the field ahead and still believes he can win.
Derrick tries to get up only to fall again. Derrick has torn his hamstring.
Out of the top row of the stadium stands a person is running down towards the track.
He hurdles the 4 ft. wall between he and the track. A security guard attempts to subdue the man but only to
be thrown to the ground.
Derrick attempts to stand again, and feels a hand on his shoulder.
This man says to him, “you don’t have to finish”.
Derrick looked up and saw his Dad and told him that he had to finish.
His Dad said, “then we’ll finish together”.
Derrick and his Dad got over to the right lane of the track and completed the 400 meters in just over 5 min’s.
Did Derrick receive a gold medal that day? No, but he did receive TRUTH, that his father would be there for
him.
This is what we as DADS and /FATHER-FIGURES are challenged to do in life.
WE COMMIT TO BE WHERE OUR CHILDREN NEED US.
MEN, WE NEED YOU TO SIGN UP TONIGHT TO COMMIT ONE DAY OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR TO INVEST IN YOUR
CHILDREN.
