Dear Members and Friends:
Our fourth annual Community Outreach Week is an inspired and inspiring opportunity to fulfill our mission to
create a more just world and a caring community while nurturing a spirit of generosity! We hope you, your
family and friends will join us from October 10th until October 25th, for one or more community service
activities. Last year more than 100 of you joined together to help make our community a better place and enjoy
the fellowship of our collective efforts.
In the catalogue accompanying this letter you will find a list of over 20 volunteer activities, a brief description
of each activity and the time it takes place. Some of the activities include serving meals at a homeless shelter
and the Ronald McDonald House , a fund-raising walk for the AIDS society, planting trees in Camden, cleaning
up at the Palmyra Nature Center, escorting patients into the NJ Women’s Center, playing with children at the
Voorhees Pediatric Facility, helping at the Cherry Hill Food Bank, working for Habitat for Humanity, Urban
Promise, an Alzheimer’s Chapter, CASA and the Frances House. We also will be cleaning some animal
shelters and the USSNJ battleship.
Following this September 13th Sunday Service, we will begin to register congregants and friends. Ask anyone
on the COW planning committee (listed below) and you can learn more about the volunteer organizations. On
Sunday the 13th and for several Sundays thereafter, members and friends may sign up for their preferred
volunteer activities.
Most of the volunteer activities are planned for the morning and afternoon of October 17th and 24th. On Sunday
October 25th after the service we will host a celebratory lunch in Fellowship Hall. NOTE: There are also
volunteer activities on October 10th, 11th,12th, 13th 14th, 15th , 18th, 19th,20th and 22nd. Visit us at www.uucch.org

Families with children, teens, neighbors, work colleagues, and friends are welcome! We can all make a

2009 Community Outreach Week Projects
Most of the COW volunteer activities are on Saturday, October 17th and 24th. A few opportunities are
scheduled for October 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 18th, 19th , 20st, and 22nd.
TBD – Team Leaders are needed for these projects. Please indicate your willingness to be a team leader on the
registration form.
Below is a summary of each activity. For more detailed information ask a COW committee member at the
registration table. Also, your team leader will call you a week ahead of your activity to give you detailed
instructions and directions to the volunteer site. You WILL be registered for the activity for which you sign up. If
the activity is filled you will be contacted.
Saturday, October 10
Help paint at the Francis House: Adults and high school youth are needed to paint some rooms at
the Francis House. The Francis House is a center that assists people who have Aids and their families.
Location: 2818 River Road, Camden.

Build a Habitat for Humanity House in Clayton,NJ. Volunteers (no children) are needed to help
with building a home in Clayton, NJ. You will be doing clean up, landscaping, drywall, painting, framing and
trim work, so wear work clothes and work boots. Tools are provided. Bring your lunch and no smoking. Team
Leader will provide directions as the location is not on GPS.

Plant trees for the NJ Tree Foundation Urban Airshed Reforestation Program in
Camden. Volunteers work in groups of three to plant trees. Up to 35 volunteers are needed. The location is
in Camden. The exact address is unknown at this printing. Tools and planting supervision are provided;
children welcome. Wear old clothes and work gloves. Carpooling advised. Rain or shine.

Representatives from the organizations listed below will be in Fellowship Hall after
the service to explain opportunities available for you to volunteer through the year:
CASA stands for “Court Appointed Special Advocates of Camden County”. The main function of this
agency is to represent in court the best interests of children who are under DYFS care due to neglect/abuse
by their parents. To become an advocate you must be selected by CASA and attend 30 hours of training.
CASA also needs help in their office located on Haddon Ave in Westmont.
Francis House is a Franciscan sponsored AIDS walk in facility for those infected with AIDS and their
families and friends. It is a center where no judgments are made and no questions asked. They treat the
mind, body and soul. Some services offered are meals, massage and Reiki .
FurreverFriends, Inc. spays and neuters all animals prior to adoption. It works to find responsible
homes for rescued animals through a detailed application process. Furrever Friends needs volunteers who
can process adoption applications carefully so that the cats are placed in homes of people who will take good
care of them. Furrever Friends also needs people to provide foster homes for cats, to help staff at the adoption
center at PetSmart in Cherry Hill and Deptford, to share in responding to Hotline Calls, to transport cats to
vet offices, help in TNR rescues, as well as assisting in other activities to make this rescue run smoothly.
Habitat Restores are retail outlets where quality, used and surplus building materials, home
furnishings, furniture and tools are sold at a fraction of normal prices. Proceeds from ReStores help local
affiliates fund the construction of Habitat houses within the community. Many affiliates across the United
States and Canada operate successful ReStores—some of which raise enough funds to build an additional 10
or more houses per year. Materials sold by Habitat ReStores are usually donated from building supply stores,
contractors, demolition crews or from individuals who wish to show their support for Habitat. In addition to
raising funds, ReStores help the environment by rechanneling good, usable materials into use.
Hopeworks’s mission is to enhance the lives of inner-city Camden youth by expanding learning
opportunities available to them. The heart of the program is technology training. The Hopeworks e-mentoring
program presently has 32 online mentors. You can access information on this program on the Hopeworks
website under mentoring. This is an ongoing program that does not require any travel, only access to a
computer/laptop. The e-mentoring program is an opportunity for Hopeworks to connect a youth with a friend.
You can also volunteer to tutor reading, writing and math throughout the school year and in the summer.
Training and tutoring takes place at 543 State St, Camden.
USS New Jersey Memorial and Museum, consisting of the Battleship and a Visitors’ Center, interprets
the USS New Jersey (BB-62)’s distinguished naval service spanning conflicts from World War II through the
1990s and highlights the State of New Jersey’s contribution to that service. The memorial fosters innovative
programs that will have a significant impact on the economic and educational base of the region.

Wrap utensils at Medford Leas for the Cathedral Kitchen Up to six volunteers are needed to
help wrap packages of utensils for the Cathedral Kitchen shelter. Up to four supervised youth can also attend.
This will be held in Bea Smolens Apartment at the Medford Leas Retirement Community.

Work at the Cherry Hill Food and Outreach Pantry Up to eight volunteers are needed to help
sort food, stack shelves and package and distribute bags of food at the Food Bank located at St Michael’s
Lutheran Parish House. The Pantry now serves 600 families in the Cherry Hill area. Children are allowed if
supervised. Parking is available. Also need volunteers 10/15 from 9:30am-1:30pm, 10/20 from 5-8:30pm

Help the Delaware Valley Alzheimer’s Association- This chapter needs up to five volunteers to
help stuff envelopes for a large mailing to supporters in Southeastern Pa, NJ and Delaware. The activity is in
the Horsch room at UUCCH. The mailing is to promote a candlelight vigil in November. The goal of this
chapter is to enhance care and support services for individuals with dementia and their families and to
advance Alzheimer’s disease research.

Help at the Animal Adoption Center in Lindenwold. This is a No-Kill shelter that provides spay
and neutering services. From five to ten volunteers are needed to help clean up the center. There may be an
opportunity to interact with the kittens. Children if supervised are welcome. 501 N. Berlin Road. Parking is
available there. Located about 4 blocks from the Patco Lindenwold stop.

Help CASA (“court appointed special advocates”) put together their training
notebooks: Come to UUCCH Horsch Room. CASA needs help organizing for future training sessions.
CASA uses trained court appointed volunteers to represent in court the best interests of children getting
DYFS services because of abuse or neglect by their parents. See www.casaofcamdencounty.org. To become
an advocate you must be selected by CASA and attend 30 hours of training.

Work at Habitat Restores: Twelve volunteers are needed to help organize the new Habitat store at 695
Central Highway in Pennsauken. This is a retail outlet for building supplies, furniture, and tools. The profit
goes to Habitat for Humanity. Volunteers will set up display racks, clean and prepare furniture for sale and
fill display areas with merchandise. Volunteers should be adults. Youth over age 13 if supervised are
welcome. Volunteers need to bring cleaning supplies.

Make breakfast for families at the Ronald McDonald House in Camden.
Up to ten volunteers (children okay if supervised) are needed to prepare and serve breakfast for 40 people who
are staying at the Ronald McDonald House while their children are being treated in nearby hospitals.
Volunteers must purchase the food. Food can be prepared ahead or use the large kitchen in the house.
Located at 550 Mickle Blvd. Parking available or use the Patco High Speed line.

Be an escort at the South Jersey Women’s Center for women patients- This center
provides reproductive and gynecological healthcare. Five volunteers will assist patients and their families at
the clinic at 10014 Haddonfield Road in Cherry Hill. (Across from Wegmans). You will also be trained to
handle any protesters who may be outside the clinic. Your continued volunteering is appreciated on other
Saturdays.

Clean and tour the USSNJ- Volunteers who are 18 or older are needed to clean the USSNJ battleship
so that it may be turned into a memorial and museum. A tour of the battleship will be given. Volunteers need
to bring brooms and cleaning supplies. You may bring lunch if desired. The battleship is located at 62
Battleship Place in Camden.

Play with children at Voorhees Pediatric Facility. This is a care facility for medically fragile,
technology dependent children. Up to ten volunteers for each of two one hour shifts are needed to play games

Walk/Run to raise money for AIDS society- Walk 8.5 miles from Eakins Oval in front of Phila Art
Museum through Philadelphia. Solicit sponsors before the walk and join a team from UUCCH. Team will leave
from Haddonfield Patco Station at 7:30am. Minimum age is 8th grade or 6th and 7th graders if accompanied by
a parent. Walk begins at 9am and takes about 2-3 hours. Contributions go toward AIDS services, research

Help at the Voorhees Animal Orphanage Four adults and 2 youth (older than 12) are needed to
help clean up the center. An orientation will be given so that volunteers can work with the animals in the
future. This shelter rescues homeless and unwanted cats, dogs and places them with loving homes. Location:
419 Cooper Road, Voorhees. Parking is available onsite.
