Module: Wired and Wireless Networking Job No: Module Code: EC2022PA 9 Duration: 3 hours Title: Packet Tracer Exercise: Construct a peer to peer topology network using hub and switch. Objective: The purpose of this exercise is to introduce the network hub and switch. Background / Preparation During the last session, we created a simple network consisting 2 PCs. This session we will learn how to construct a network with more than 2 PCs. For this purpose we use either a network hub or a switch. A network hub and switch is network component used to connect multiple computers and other devices to be connected in a Local Area Network. A switch is capable of inspecting data packets and determine the source and destination of each packet and thus forwarding them appropriately. In this session you should work through at least the following sections: 1. Understand the basic functions of Packet Tracer. Create a simple network using hub and switch. Observe traffic behaviour on the network. Load the Packet Tracer simulation software. Start > All Programs> Cisco Packet Tracer. We build network topology by selecting devices and media connecting them. Several types of devices and network connections can be used. For this lab we will be using End Devices, Switches, Hubs, and Connections. These can be found at the bottom left hand corner of the Packet Tracer. 3. Click End Devices (PC icon) from the options in the bottom left-hand corner. Click and drag 3 generic PC to the workspace. 4. Click on PC0 and configure these parameters: Turn on Port Status Enter IP address for FastEthernet 0/0 as 192.168.10.1 The subnet mask is set automatically to 255.255.255.0 5. Click on PC1 and configure these parameters: Turn on Port Status Enter IP address for FastEthernet 0/0 as 192.168.10.2 The subnet mask is set automatically to 255.255.255.0 6. Click on PC3 and configure these parameters: Turn on Port Status Enter IP address for FastEthernet 0/0 as 192.168.10.3 The subnet mask is set automatically to 255.255.255.0 7. Select Hubs from the options in the bottom left-hand corner. Add a generic hub to your workspace network by dragging it onto your design area. 8. Click the connection (thunder icon) to select the copper straight-through cable. Choose a copper straight-through cable type. 9. Click on PC0 and assign the cable to the FastEthernet connector and click hub to select Port0 to complete the connection. 10. Click on PC1 and select FastEthernet connector and click hub to select Port1 to complete the connection. 11. Click on PC2 and select FastEthernet connector and click hub to select Port2 to complete the connection.
