Global History and Geography II Honors Mr. Siebrecht Course Description The New York State Scope and Sequence for Global History and Geography for grades nine and ten social studies classes presents teachers and students with a major challenge. The two-year course of study features a chronological approach to the broad sweep of human history, beginning with the origins of societies and civilizations and continuing to the present. The course, organized by eras, is followed by a rigorous New York State Regents examination at the end of 10th grade. The regents exam-required of all students-tests content knowledge from both the ninth and tenth grade years of study and students’ ability to apply that content through responses to multiple choice questions, thematic essays, and document-based questions. The Global History and Geography core curriculum is designed to focus on the five social studies standards and common themes that recur across time and place. This curriculum provides students with the opportunity to explore what is happening in various regions and civilizations at a given time. In addition, it enables them to investigate issues and themes from multiple perspectives and make global connections and linkages that lead to in-depth understanding. As students explore the five social studies standards, they should have the opportunity to explore the content and intellectual skills of these disciplines. Each assignment will be assigned a grade point value depending on the degree of difficulty of the assignment. Homework will be assigned on a daily basis. Quizzes and tests will be based on the handouts in your binder, so make sure all classwork/homework is completed and organized! If you participate on a regular basis you will receive an additional 3 points on your average each quarter. All handouts you receive in class must be organized in your binder. To calculate your grade I will divide the total points you receive by the total points possible. This is an INTENSE class. There will be a large amount of reading and writing for you to complete in class and outside of class. Each quarter you will complete a project that will be due at the end of the quarter. The Daily Routine Bring your binder and writing utensils to class everyday. Each day the homework will be written down on the board for you to copy at the beginning of class. Daily lessons will include one or a combination of the following activities; reading, writing, debates, DVD’s, DBQ related activities, and/or special projects. Policy on Lateness You will lose 10 percent of the total point value of the assignment for each day that it is late. For example, if an assignment is worth 30 points, and you hand it in one day late, than you will lose 3 points. If the assignment is two days late, than you will lose 6 points. Hand your homework in on time!!!!!!! Policy on Absence You must be here in order to be successful. If you do have to miss class than it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to come to me to get the work you missed as soon as you get back to school. Materials and Supplies It is important that students come to class prepared everyday. Students need a binder with looseleaf for this course only, pens, and pencils. Bring your binder and a pen to class EVERYDAY. Expectations for Student Performance Students MUST maintain a 90% during their academic year. The first time a student falls below a 90% at any 5-week marking period, a warning letter from the Social Studies Department will be generated and mailed home. The student will have the next 5 weeks to raise his/her average back to a 90%. If the student does not raise his/her average back to a 90% by the next 5-week marking period, than the student will be removed from the Honors program and placed into our Regents Global classes.
