Unknown Thanksgiving is upon us. In my file I ran across these thoughts from John Fisher about What Thanksgiving Can Do. Hopefully they will challenge you. Thanksgiving is the theme song of the Christian. For a Christian not to be thankful is like a dog not to wag his tail at his owner's approach. Thankful Christians are grateful for every breath, every sunset, every new morning, every color in the color spectrum and every star in the sky. It's hard to think of one vice that the virtue of thankfulness cannot render useless. One does not need to steal when one is thankful. A man does not covet his neighbor's wife when he is thankful for his own. No one craves more when he is grateful for what he has. A thankful heart also cancels out pride and arrogance. No need to judge other people when you are thankful for who you are. No need to measure yourself by and compare yourself to others when you are thankful for what God has done in your life. You don't care if you get the important seat at that table when you are overcome with gratitude at simply being invited to the dinner. You don't put heavy weights on others people's shoulder's when you are thankful that God has lightened your own load. Your are not obsessed with what other people think of you when you are overwhelmed with the fact that God is thinking about you all the time. You don't demand respect when you are thankful for your place. You don't have to protect your image when you are already number one with God. You don't have to condemn other people's blindness when it's only the grace of God that has allowed you to see. You don't have to condemn other people's blindness when it's only the grace of God that has allowed you to see. You don't have to make a show of spirituality when you are thankful for having received the Spirit. You don't have to be full of yourself when you are thankful that God has filled you up with Himself. Not only do we have a lot to be thankful for, our thankfulness can accomplish much. May thankfulness to God permeate your heart today and every day and accomplish God's desired purpose. Pastor Steve Shaken Youth Ministry Advent is one of my favorite times of year. Reflecting on God's entrance into human flesh to take on the task of unveiling his imminent Kingdom is such a wonderful way to end the year. I hope that Christmas is reflective for you and your family this year. Indiana State Youth Convention was a blast! We took 8 teenage boys and had an awesome encounter with God. We learned about the Holy Spirit and how it can be the real and active presence of God in our lives. I'm excited to see how this renewed message changes our youth over the coming months. Merry Christmas. This month we celebrate our King. There is a throne and somebody is on it! Joey December News Annual Business Meeting The Annual Business meeting will take place Sunday, December 5, following a carry-in lunch after morning worship. Everyone is highly encouraged to attend both events. Christmas Caroling On Sunday, December 12 we will be traveling to local nursing homes to spread some Christmas cheer through song. We will meet at Faith Community at 5:30 pm. Christ's Birthday Observance The theme this year is God with Us. "For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross." Colossians 1:19-20 NIV. There are devotional booklets available on the welcome table for families to use during the Advent Season. We will collect a Christ's Birthday Offering on Sunday, December 19. The offering goes to help spread the good news of Christ's coming around the world. Special Christmas Eve Service Friday, December 24 at 7:00 pm. we will have our annual Candles, Carols and Communion Service. Small Groups The small groups are studying the video based curriculum by Timothy Keller, Gospel of Life. It looks at how to live out the gospel in your every day life - first in your heart, then in your community, and then into the world. Please join us for this time of fellowship and growth. Small Groups will not meet in December. They will reconvene in January. New Adult Sunday School Class In December, the adult Sunday school class will be doing a study of Advent. The class, led by Sandy Webb, will explore the meaning of advent as well as share some insights from the main characters in the Christmas story. Christmas Cards To save on postage this holiday season, bring your Christmas cards to members of the congregation to the church. Cards can be distributed in the mailboxes located by the church office. Love In The Name of Christ In December, we will be collecting cereal and dish soap for Love In the Name of Christ's food pantry. You can place your donations on the counter by the church office.
