The Lord’s Day Order of Worship February 7, 2016 PRELUDE WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 130:13-14 PRAYER OF ADORATION HYMNS OF ADORATION Hallelujah, Praise Jehovah Music: Darwin Jordan Hallelujah, praise Jehovah, O my soul, Jehovah praise; I will sing the glorious praises of my God through all my days. Put no confidence in princes, nor for help on man depend; He shall die, to dust returning, and his purposes shall end. Happy is the man that chooses Israel's God to be his aid; He is blest whose hope of blessing on the Lord his God is stayed. Heaven and earth the Lord created, seas and all that they contain; He delivers from oppression, righteousness He will maintain. Food He daily gives the hungry, sets the mourning prisoner free, raises those bowed down with anguish, makes the sightless eyes to see, well Jehovah loves the righteous, and the stranger He befriends, helps the fatherless and widow, judgment on the wicked sends. Hallelujah, praise Jehovah, O my soul, Jehovah praise; I will sing the glorious praises of my God through all my days. Over all God reigns forever, through all ages He is King; unto Him, thy God, O Zion, joyful hallelujahs sing. What Wondrous Love Is This? What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul! What wondrous love is this, O my soul! What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss, to bear the dreadful Curse for my soul, for my soul, to bear the dreadful curse for my soul. When I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down, when I was sinking down, sinking down, when I was sinking down beneath God’s righteous frown, Christ laid aside His crown for my soul, for my soul, Christ laid aside His crown for my soul. To God and to the Lamb, I will sing, I will sing; to God and to the Lamb I will sing. To God and to the Lamb Who is the great I Am; while millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing; while millions join the theme, I will sing. And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on; and when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on. And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing and joyful be, and through eternity I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on, and through eternity I’ll sing on. CONFESSION OF SIN Matthew Henry’s A Method for Prayer Our God, you have made all people in your image and for your glory. But we have been ready to judge our brother, and to regard him as though he were of no value to us. We have forgotten that we will all soon stand before the judgment seat of Christ. Contrary to the royal law of love, we have been puffed up and proud. We have been rude and sought our own advantage above the well-being of others. We have been easily provoked. We have rejoiced when others have fallen into sin, and have been secretly glad at their calamities. Forgive us, Father, for our failure to value your image. Help us see your mercy toward us in Christ, and make us merciful to others. Through Christ our Lord, Amen. HYMN OF PARDON All I Have Is Christ Music and Lyrics: Sovereign Grace Music I once was lost in darkest night, yet thought I knew the way; the sin that promised joy and life, had led me to the grave. I had no hope that You would own, a rebel to Your will; and if You had not loved me first, I would refuse You still. But as I ran my hell-bound race, indifferent to the cost; You looked upon my helpless state, and led me to the cross. And I beheld God’s love displayed, You suffered in my place, You bore the wrath reserved for me, now all I know is grace. Chorus: Hallelujah! All I have is Christ, Hallelujah! Jesus is my life. Now, Lord, I would be Yours alone, and live so all might see; the strength to follow Your commands, could never come from me. Oh Father, use my ransomed life, in any way You choose; and let my song forever be, my only boast is You. Chorus CONFESSION OF FAITH The Westminster Shorter Catechism Question 10: How did God create man? Answer: God created man male and female, after his own image, in knowledge, righteousness, and holiness, with dominion over the creatures. NEW TESTAMENT READING Luke 12:49-56 Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. PASTORAL PRAYER Parents may take their children four years old and under to the nursery. Chris Akridge, Ruling Elder SILENT CONFESSION OF SIN WORSHIP THROUGH GIVING ASSURANCE OF PARDON Ephesians 2:13-16 DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. SERMON “Devaluing God’s Image” Amos 1:3-2:3 THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD’S SUPPER We welcome all Christians who are trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, who have been baptized, and who are identified appropriately with a congregation that proclaims the gospel, to participate in the Lord’s Supper. Children who have been examined by the elders and admitted to the Lord’s Table are also invited to partake of this Sacrament. If you are not a Christian, or you are not prepared to share in this sacrament, we encourage you to spend this time in prayer, reflecting on your need for God’s mercy and on his gracious provision of a sin-bearing Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. HYMN OF RESPONSE Behold the Lamb Music and Lyrics: Keith and Kristyn Getty; Stuart Townend Behold the Lamb who bears our sins away, slain for us - and we remember; the promise made that all who come in faith find forgiveness at the cross. So we share in this bread of life, and we drink of His sacrifice as a sign of our bonds of peace, around the table of the King. The body of our Saviour Jesus Christ, torn for you - eat and remember; the wounds that heal, the death that brings us life paid the price to make us one. So we share in this bread of life, and we drink of His sacrifice as a sign of our bonds of love, around the table of the King. The blood that cleanses every stain of sin, shed for you drink and remember; He drained death's cup that all may enter in to receive the life of God. So we share in this bread of life, and we drink of His sacrifice as a sign of our bonds of grace, around the table of the King. And so with thankfulness and faith we rise to respond, - and to remember, our call to follow in the steps of Christ as His body here on earth. As we share in His suffering we proclaim Christ will come again! And we’ll join in the feast of heaven around the table of the King.
