Educational Leadership Leadership Development Workshops Accelerated School Administrator Program (ASAP) Cohort Designed for Assistant Principals who are interested in becoming principals, ASAP is a leadership learning program that combines state-of-the-art technology with interpersonal interactions. Participants complete selfselected, highly interactive learning modules, attend weekend retreats for intensive learning experiences, complete an individualized leadership learning plan, and participate in an on-site internship. (Various days scheduled throughout the year) Action Research: A Safari On Days 1 and 2, participants engage in strategies for exploring essential questions in schools and classrooms, providing a framework for investigating student performance and guiding improvement. The processes for conducting Action Research and for initiating effective Learning Communities are outlined, using case studies and relevant examples. On the follow-up day, participants share successes and work through any barriers for successful implementation. (3 days: 2+1) Admin. 101: Finding Your Way as a New Principal Participants learn strategies from experienced principals for dealing with relevant issues and day-to-day challenges. This session is delivered in conjunction with offerings provided by Bob Donaldson for new principals. (2 hr. sessions throughout the year) Adult Learning: Fine Tune Your Training to Inspire Action This highly interactive session provides participants information, strategies, practice and support needed for ensuring a successful training or workshop for adults. Participants leave with a workshop template that includes the Learning Cycle and critical questions for each section, as well as an agenda for an upcoming session. (1 day) 1 of 8 Budget Essentials for Administrators Powerful strategies and information are demonstrated through “hands on” experience to help school leaders create and maintain effective school budgets. Participants are equipped with valuable resources for making this essential administrative project manageable and successful. (1 day) Budget Essentials for Administrators – Follow-Up During this interactive, half-day session, participants who attended the initial Budget Essentials for Administrators learn additional strategies for handling internal accounts, gain insight into budget issues specific to individual school sites, and begin to develop the school’s proposed budget for the upcoming year. (1/2 day) Classroom Walk-Through (CWT) School administrators are provided state-recommended strategies for focused, non-threatening classroom visits which promote teacher reflection on teaching methods. (2 days: 1+1) Classroom Walk-Through Update School administrators expand their current knowledge of CWT and develop a plan for implementation at the school site. Prerequisite: Administrators must have completed the two-day initial CWT training. (1 day) Clinical Educator Training Upon successful completion of this workshop, teachers are qualified to supervise interns and mentor first year teachers. Participants learn how to collect classroom data, deliver feedback to teachers, implement Clinical Educator Development Plans, utilize information contained in the Domains of the Florida Performance Measurement System (FPMS), and collect data using the FPMS Formative Instrument. (2 or 3 days) Coaching and Mentoring – Advanced School administrators interested in becoming coaches/mentors for the district take a series of four 3-hour sessions to enhance their capabilities. Coaching and Mentoring for Administrators – Initial is a prerequisite for the workshop. (4 three-hr. sessions) 2 of 8 Coaching and Mentoring – Initial Recognizing that building success in an organization requires the ability to compassionately foster self-responsibility and collaboration in teams, this session offers school leaders information, strategies, and experiences to enhance their capabilities as effective coaches/mentors for others. Coaching for School Improvement (SREB) School teams utilize a coaching format using Tom Crane’s Heart of Coaching model and a six-step School Improvement Process to guide effective schoolwide improvement. Multiple tools and strategies are provided for each coaching level. (3 days: 2 + 1). Recommended prerequisite: Creating a HighPerformance Learning Culture. Creating a High-Performance Learning Culture (SREB) Participants learn what culture is and why it must be cultivated; what roles leaders play in growing the culture; and what tools and strategies are available to help leaders foster a culture that supports improvement, high expectations, and the well-being of all students. School teams work together to learn effective ways to develop a high performance learning culture in their respective schools. Specific school data is utilized. (3 days: 2 + 1) Customer Service Excellence This stimulating workshop provides participants strategies for treating customers (internal and external) as “guests,” thereby avoiding unproductive interactions. Participants learn techniques for remaining calm in stressful situations and practice a variety of ways to respond to difficult customer complaints in real-life situations. (1 day) Dealing with the Media: The Good, the Bad, and the Basics This workshop offers school leaders and District personnel tips, advice, and practical guidelines for dealing with the media. Through discussion, demonstrations, and role playing, participants will be provided information and strategies for dealing with reporters. The District’s policies and procedures for proper media facilitation will be outlined. (1/2 day) Due Process Training for Administrators School administrators receive critical information regarding their duties when dealing with personnel issues. Florida School Law and the Florida Administrative Code for employee discipline are covered, as well as the Florida Statutes for Personnel duties and responsibilities. Participants distinguish 3 of 8 between law and contract and review the NEAT procedure. Strategies for handling discipline in the work environment are also shared. (1/2 day) Due Process Training for Administrators: Follow-Up Administrators who have taken the initial workshop practice writing reprimand and summary of conference, and role play scenarios. Time on the agenda is devoted to questions on specific issues. (1/2 day) ESOL Administrator/Guidance Series: Administrative Cultural Awareness This 18 credit hour course provides participants strategies for communicating effectively with diverse families and for creating a culture of success for LEPs in the school. Background information regarding ESOL training and state requirements is also shared. (1 day contact + assignments) ESOL Administrator/Guidance Series: Administrative Online Foundations This 24 credit hour course provides participants information on the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Agreement and its impact on school personnel. Audit procedures and legal responsibilities of the target group in the ESOL program are also covered. (2 hours + assignments) ESOL Administrator/Guidance Series: Teacher Evaluation This 18 credit hour course provides participants strategies for coaching and mentoring teachers in ESOL instruction, techniques to share with teachers to provide comprehensible instruction for the Limited English Proficient (LEP) students at a school; and background information regarding ESOL training and state requirements. (1 day + assignments) Ethical Dilemmas: Between a Rock and a Rock Through video, discussion, role playing, and self-reflection, participants will explore the snares and success of making difficult decisions in the educational arena. State and district policies and procedures will be reviewed. (4 hrs.) 4 of 8 Facilitative Leadership: Tapping the Power of Participation Participants are provided a forum to explore their challenges and aspirations as leaders. They develop practical skills and tools for tapping the creativity, experience and commitment of the people with whom they work by exploring seven practices of facilitative leadership: Sharing an Inspiring Vision; Focusing on Results, Process, and Relationships; Seeking Maximum, Appropriate Involvement; Designing Pathways to Action; Facilitating Agreement; Coaching for Performance; and Celebrating Accomplishment. (3 days) FISH! This workshop involves participants in the FISH! philosophy demonstrated in the innovative video of the world famous Pike Place Fish Market in Seattle, WA. Participants discover and experience ways to bring energy, passion, and a positive attitude with them each day, resulting in an interesting, creative, and productive environment in which people are truly connected to their work, their colleagues, and their customers. (1/2 day) Florida Performance Measurement System (FPMS): Initial Training Participants receive initial training in the utilization of the Florida Performance Measurement System summative instrument. Information and skills gained are used by individuals responsible for teacher observations or annual assessments. (3 days) Interaction Management Core Modules: Tactics for Effective Leadership This management training concept, designed by Development Dimensions International, targets those individuals whose roles require them to lead others to accomplish day-to-day goals and objectives. Participants learn and practice strategies for building commitment, facilitating improved performance, and following-up to support improvement. (2 days) Leadership Awareness Training I This leadership development series is designed for certificated personnel who hold a Master’s Degree and who are interested in finding out about the process to become an administrator with Brevard Public School. Self-assessments, competency acquisition, and a shadowing component provide participants with the information and awareness they need prior to applying to Brevard’s Assistant Principal Pool. Included in the series is awareness on the following topics: Interaction Management, Targeted Selection, and effective leadership. (30 hours) 5 of 8 Leadership Awareness Training II This leadership development series, designed for non-instructional leaders or for certificated personnel with at least a Master’s Degree, focuses on organizational awareness and the organizational structure of Brevard Public Schools. The Superintendent’s Senior Staff provides in-depth overviews of department responsibilities and functions. Participants will interact with district leadership personnel and will learn the complexity of the relationships among departments and schools. (Ten 3-hour sessions) Leading Change (SREB) School teams understand the different human and organizational factors that impact a school’s ability to implement and sustain meaningful change. Teams work on identifying a vision of adaptive change – change that is deeply rooted in the culture. They also work on applying a framework for sustainable implementation. Prerequisite for this class: Creating a High-Performance Learning Culture. (4 days: 3 + 1) Personality/Learning/Teaching Styles (True Colors) Through a series of interactive activities, participants recognize and appreciate the unique strengths and preferences of themselves, other staff members, and students. Techniques developed from research on motivational characteristics and personal temperament intrinsic to each person will be shared. Participants are also provided knowledge and skills to enhance rapport and communication with others in their personal and professional lives. (1/2 day or 1 full day or 2 half days) Preparing for Administrative Interviewing Individuals preparing to apply for administrative positions review and practice behavioral-based interviewing featuring the Targeted Selection process. Tips are provided to develop and enhance pre-administrative professional experiences. (1 day) Prioritizing, Mapping and Monitoring the Curriculum (SREB) School teams learn the benefits of prioritizing, mapping and monitoring the curriculum to more deeply understand what students need to learn, which learning is most important, and how to know if the curriculum is being taught. (4 days: 2 +1 +1) Recommended prerequisite: Creating a HighPerformance Learning Culture Public Speaking This leadership development series is designed to cover essential elements of public speaking. Regardless of position or experience, participants practice 6 of 8 these elements in a safe, collegial, non-threatening environment. Topics include presentation skills and techniques, room set-up, telephone etiquette, and audiovisual tips and techniques. (15 hours) Seven Habits of Highly Effective People Based on the highly acclaimed work of Stephen Covey, this interactive workshop focuses on strategies for attaining personal and professional effectiveness. Participants learn strategies to increase proactive behavior, become more opportunity-minded, increase self-esteem, build on mission and values, have more time for high-leverage activities, improve negotiation skills, become a better listener, improve synergistic problem-solving and teamwork, and balance production and production capability. (3 days) SREB Leadership Curriculum Modules (see in alphabetical order in text) Coaching for School Improvement Creating a High-Performance Learning Culture Leading Change Prioritizing, Mapping, and Monitoring the Curriculum StrengthsPerformance This interactive workshop is designed for those who elect to complete the Gallup Organization’s StrengthsFinder. During the session, participants discuss, analyze, and reflect on the real-life behaviors that stem from one’s top five Signature Themes. Leaders are provided insight into why they are successful, what they do best, and how to use strengths more deliberately to enhance performance. (1/2 day) Targeted Selection This workshop is designed to train individuals in the Targeted Selection process for the selection of school-based administrators. Participants are trained in a behavioral interview process that collects data on an individual by asking specific patterned questions about past performance. Individuals must demonstrate competency in the process prior to the conclusion of the workshop. (2 days) Teacher Leadership This professional development series is designed for teachers who are interested in learning about the many leadership opportunities Brevard Public Schools offers its teachers. Participants explore the skills and attributes needed to take on increased responsibilities in their schools and at the district level. (Four 2-hour sessions) 7 of 8 Understanding PAR and Position Control School administrators receive critical information regarding their duties and responsibilities with allocations, reappointments, reclassifying and transferring employees and employing vacancies. How to use the Position Allocation Report (PAR) during the planning process is shared, as well as strategies for being successful at the “Beginning School Count” meeting. (1/2 day) Using Data to Make Instructional Decisions This hands-on workshop focuses on recognizing patterns in data to develop proven strategies for teachers to increase student performance. Participants use data to perform a needs assessment and develop instructional practices to address student learning needs. (1 day) 8 of 8
