1. Read the function of each of the structures listed in the table below.
Structure Function
Right
Atrium
Receives oxygen-poor blood from the body.
Right
Ventricle
Receives oxygen-poor blood from the right atrium and pumps this
blood to the lungs.
Left atrium
Receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs.
Left
Ventricle
Receives oxygen-rich blood from the left atrium and pumps it to all
parts of the body.
Valves
Allow blood to flow in only one direction through the heart. Prevent
backflow of blood.
Septum
Separates the two ventricles of the heart. Prevents oxygen-poor and
oxygen-rich blood from mixing in the heart.
Arteries
Carry blood away from the heart. Major arteries: Pulmonary Arteries
(to lungs) and Aorta (branches up and down to body).
Veins
Carry blood to the heart. Major veins: Superior Vena Cava and Inferior
Vena Cava (from body to heart) and Pulmonary Veins (from both
lungs to heart).
