INDEPENDENT ELECTORAL BODY
Introduction and welcoming
On the occasion of the parliamentary elections which will take place on 25 May 2015, the
OKB would like to emphasize the importance of the completion of the electoral process in our country, which is a fundamental stage in the process of the country's democratic and constitutional institutions.
We welcome the observers to share the electoral process in the hope of preventing logistical problems, delays in opening and closing of polling stations, in particular without recording of significant calamities. We have the culture till so far in organizing of elections fair, free and transparent. The OKB hope to congratulate each other, and all the political parties with the best result concerned to accept and comply with the outcome of the Elections.
You as observer need to have all the requirements and the very specific information to perform your duties. It is important to understand the scope and methodology behind the observation process, the legal framework, the boundary delimitation, ballot qualification, and also the audits of the voters list will be available at the Main Polling Stations in the Districts and the office of the Electoral Secretariat within the Ministry of Home Affairs in Paramaribo.
As far as we could overview, we started gathering for you the most relevant documents and information. All these documents you will find as annexes or as attachments. It will be completed in time before arrival of the observers in the country.
References are made to the annexes– as much as possible – digitally to not overload you with a bunch of paper work.
We have in mind a power point presentation from the diverse electoral units within the
Ministry of Home Affairs, responsible for the organizations of the Elections. These presentations will provide you a more clear picture of the most relevant aspects of the electoral processes.
The participation of short term international observers from international organizations, local embassies and non residential embassies is expecting for a stay in Suriname during the actual period of 2 days before, and on the Day of Election, 25 th of May.

Suriname, officially the Republic of Suriname, is a country in northern South America, located between French Guiana to the east and Guyana to the west and bordered by Brazil to the south. The Atlantic forms the northern border of the country. The east border with French Guiana is formed by the Marowijne River while the west border with Guyana goes along the Corantijn River. South of the country is dominated by forests, savannahs and mountains, which separate it from Brazil .
Suriname is the smallest sovereign state in terms of area in South America and also the only country outside Europe with
Dutch as an official language. Geographically the country is divided into two parts: the northern and the southern regions.
The north that covers about 20% of the total country's area, is home to most of the Suriname's population and features cultivated coastal lowlands covered with mangrove swamps. The terrain in the south is hilly to mountainous covered with dense tropical forest, with numerous rivers and streams as well as sparsely inhabited savanna along the border with Brazil .
The highest mountain is Juliana top at 1,286 m (4,219 ft).
