Language Usage/Grammar:
Goals – Recognize parts of speech, parts and types of sentences
Use verbs and verb tenses correctly
Recognize and use phrases and clauses properly
Punctuate and capitalize correctly

Literature:
Goal – Become acquainted with literary works including short stories, essays,
poems, plays and novels
Resources – The Language of Literature (includes Julius Caesar)
Of Mice and Men
Evaluation – Discussions, papers, class work, homework, quizzes and tests
Vocabulary:
Goal – Enrich vocabulary
Resources – Vocabulary Workshop Level E, “Latin Words” packet
Evaluation – Class work, quizzes and tests
Book Reports:
Goals – Develop an appreciation of reading
Read four books per year, independently
Evaluation – Written and/or oral reports
Composition:
Goal – Write with focus, content, organization, style and correct conventions
Resources – Topics as they arise within the curriculum
Evaluation – Written work judged by the PA System of Academic Writing
Standards
Public Speaking:
Goal – Develop the ability to organize and present a formal speech
Resources – Topics as generated by works read throughout the school year
Evaluation – Analysis of the presentation
Research Paper:
Goal – Learn to choose and limit a topic
Acquire investigative skills
Organize and report according to MLA standards

Writers of Research Papers.

Mythology :
Goal – Learn the main characters and stories from Greco-Roman mythology
Resource – Edith Hamilton’s Mythology
Evaluation – Discussions, class work, homework, quizzes and tests
Grading is based on the point values of each item. Papers and tests carry the most
point values. Papers show the students’ abilities in all areas of language arts. Tests
are on topics on which we have spent and great deal of time. Quizzes cover smaller
amounts of material presented. Homework is graded on effort.
