Activity Description: Participants will attend and document their participation in a variety of technology-oriented sessions at the 2009 IWLA conference and will also attend the postconference workshop at DMACC. The sessions offered will include topics related to pedagogy and applications of second life, virtual travel, wikis, Moodle, audio drop boxes, etc., for use in the foreign language classroom. To conclude their experience, participants will post their lesson plans and reflection papers on the group's wiki so that we can learn from each other and reflect on other possible applications of this technology in the future. 2009 IWLA conference sessions with a technology focus (participants should attend/document FOUR of these for credit): Saturday, October 9th (IWLA conference) 8:00-8:50 Challenges of Teaching in a Classroom/Lab 10:45-11:35 Using Music and Music Videos to teach Grammar and Vocabulary 2:10-3:00 CALL evaluation: Effectiveness & impact of Spanish learners using a web-based multimedia program 3:10-4:00 Software in a Stick: Portable open-source software for language learning & teaching 4:40-5:30 Wrap-up session, discuss credit requirements, sharing session of learning so far Saturday, October 10th (morning-IWLA conference) 9:30-10:20 Top Technology learning tools from a Digital Immigrant 10:30-11:20 Virtual Travel along the Camino de Santiago 11:30-12:20 Teleport, fly, dance, and build: new skills for language learning in Second Life Saturday, October 10th (Post-conference workshop) During the post-conference workshops on Saturday, October 10th, participants will attend 2 sessions according to their preferences (determined at registration). Lab #1 - 1:00-3:00 - Audio/Visual, 3:00-5:00 – Audio/Visual Lab #2 - 1:00-3:00 - Getting your class online, 3:00-5:00 - Getting your class online Lab #3 - 1:00-3:00 - Webtools, 3:00-5:00 - Electronic portfolios. To receive credit, participants should complete the following: 1. Submit a session list reflecting the presentations/workshops you attended 2. Submit a 2-3 page summary/synthesis of what you learned from these sessions. This may also include further questions that you have or analysis of the hurdles you may face to implementing some/any of these applications 3. Submit 1 lesson plan detailing how you will use/apply at least 1 technological application you learned about. 4. Submit a “course evaluation”—available online at the Heartland website Items 2 & 3 should be posted to the IWLA Tech workshop wiki (directions will be provided at the workshop) so that your fellow participants can share in your learning and hopefully get other ideas for how they could apply them. Deadline for completion of these tasks is October 17, 2009 to receive Heartland credit. “Grades” will be submitted on October 19th, and you must be registered by then in order to receive credit.
