1. Why was there a war between Great Britain and China? What was the result?

Allowed free trade in Chinese areas under European control. Proposed by the
United States.
5. What was the Boxer Rebellion? What was the long term result?
A Chinese nationalist movement. They captured foreigners and held them hostage
for 55 days. China was fined and humiliated.
6. What were the 3 revolutionary ideals of Sun Yixian? What type of government did he believe would
eventually develop in China?
Natiionalism, Democracy, People's livelihood. He believed it would eventually
become a democracy.
7. How did European intervention in China contribute to the downfall of the Qing Dynasty?
It led to nationalist movements in China. Many groups began to call for the
overthrow of the Qing Dynasty.
8. How did the Treaty of Kanagawa affect Japan?
It allowed American ships to stop at two Japanese ports. It also opened 5 other
ports and gave extraterritoriality rights to westerners.
9. What 3 reforms happened under the Meiji Restoration?
They studied in the U.S. and Europe to learn about Western Society, Military
Practices and economics. (Children had to go to school, copied our armed forces,
supported industrialism)
10. Why did Japan become imperialistic?
It was ready to take its place on the world stage. It's victory established Japan as
the most powerful state in Asia.
11. What 2 countries did Japan fight wars over imperialistic expansions?
 China (Sino-Japanese war)
 Russia (Russo-Japanese war)
12. Why were Europeans interested in colonizing Southeast Asia? What 4 European countries
controlled most of Southeast Asia?
 To gain spices such as cloves and pepper.

