Chair of Governors Message
I consider being the Chair of Governors for Ward Jackson Church of
England Primary School a great privilege. It is a great school to be part
of.
Whenever anyone walks into the building they receive a warm welcome by
the children and staff alike. The school has such a family feel and each
child is valued and accepted as they are.
School recently changed its status to a Church of England Voluntary
Aided School. There was a grand re opening ceremony where the Bishop
of Jarrow came and spoke to the school and blessed a special plaque made
for the occasion. The children took great delight in releasing balloons and
two doves to mark the great occasion. Each pupil received a school jumper
with the new logo on as a gift from Stranton Church. It was lovely to see
each child proudly wearing their gift.
The school already had a very caring ethos before changing status so the
change has just enhanced the ethos and strengthened the connection
with Stranton Church.
Children at Ward Jackson Church of England Primary School, thrive both
academically and emotionally, as each child is accepted and encouraged to
be themselves. The Headteacher and staff work hard to always give the
children the best possible education so that each child achieves their full
potential. The school was rewarded for all their hard work with a ‘Good
with Outstanding features’ from their latest Ofsted report.
I am excited at the prospect of what we will all be able to achieve this
year as the children, staff, parents and governors work together in order
to make Ward Jackson Church of England Primary School the best that it
can be.
Mrs Angela Hall, Chair of Governors
Dear Parent/Carer
On behalf of the children, governors and staff I would like to welcome
your child to Ward Jackson Church of England Primary School. We look
forward to working in partnership with you to provide a very happy,
secure and inspirational learning environment.
Ward Jackson became a Church of England Primary School in September
2011 because we wanted to openly celebrate the school’s caring, Christian
ethos and further strengthen our links within the community and in
particular with Stranton Church.
We are very proud our inclusive, family orientated school. Being small
(just over 100 pupils) we are like a village community, supporting and
encouraging each other to do our best in order to reach personal goals.
Our aim is that your child will leave us with a good knowledge base and an
enjoyment and passion for learning throughout their future life.
We very much value our good relationships with parents and we hope that
the information in this prospectus is helpful. If you have any further
questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at school.

A Message of Welcome from the Bishop of Durham, Bishop Paul
Butler
It has been my privilege over many years to visit schools in many different
places. This has been across England but also in some of the very poorest
countries in the world, like Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda. It does not matter
where I see schools at work, I am always impressed by the dedication of
teachers and the longing of parents to want the very best for their children. As
a parent I know you want the very best for your child. The Church of England
is engaged in schools because it too wants the very best for every child.
Every child matters because every child is special. Naturally they are special
to you, their parent or carer, and to grandparents. They are also very special
to the school. This is particularly true for us in church schools because of what
we believe about the value God places on every child.
Jesus’ friends were arguing one day about who was the greatest in God’s
kingdom. Jesus took a small child, stood him or her amongst the group and
told all the adults that unless they became like this child they could never
enter God’s kingdom. I often wonder just how very special that child felt that
day. We want that sense of being loved, accepted and valued to be at the
very heart of our schools, and of your child’s education.
Education matters because it provides building blocks for life now and into the
future. We seek to offer the very best education we can in every school. This
is not simply about the important matters of reading, writing, numbers and the
like. It is also about the values by which we behave, and the kind of people we
want to be. We believe our church schools offer great all round education for
every child.
I love being able to visit schools and meet children. They are always
enthusiastic, welcoming and brilliant at asking tough questions. Their zeal for
learning is inspiring.
So welcome to one of our wonderful church schools. I trust your child will find
they grow and develop well throughout their time here.

Parents and carers are strongly encouraged not to take their
children on holiday during school time. High achievement is
strongly linked with good attendance and punctuality in school.
Please note that the Statutory Attainment Tests (SATS) for
Year 6 pupils take place in the month of May.
Admissions
The Governing Body of Ward Jackson C of E Primary School is the
Admissions Authority for this school. The Governing Body intend to
admit 14 pupils to the Reception year group in September 2014. Places
will be allocated using the Community and Voluntary Controlled Schools
admissions criteria.
In the firs instance, places will be awarded to those pupils with a
statement of special educational needs where the school is named in the
statement. The remaining places will be awarded in the following priority
order:
1. Those children who are in the care of the local authority;
2. Those children who live in the school’s admission zone;
3. Those children who have older bothers or sisters who will be
attending the school in September 2013;
4. Those children who are distinguished from the great majority of
other applicants whether on medical ground or by other exceptional
circumstances and who would suffer significant hardship if they
were unable to attend the school;
5. Those children who live closest to the school as determined by the
shortest suitable walking distance.
Should it prove necessary to distinguish between children within criteria
2, priority will e given to those with siblings attending the school,
followed by those who live nearest the school. Should it prove necessary
to distinguish between children in any other criteria (or between children
with older sibling in the above situation) then priority will be given to
those who live nearest the school.
Safeguarding
“At Ward Jackson C of E Primary School safeguarding children
is everyone’s primary responsibility” Mrs Brough, Headteacher.
It is the duty of the Headteacher, staff and governors to
ensure that school is a secure environment in which children
can flourish.
Visitors are allowed into school only after appropriate
identification and CRB clearance. The school has a 6 feet high
perimeter fence and the gates are locked at 8.45am and
opened at 3.10pm.
Visitors are always welcome at school but would need to make
an appointment.
School has successfully passed this years Health and Safety
Inspection and a Fire Inspection. All staff have completed the
Introduction to Child Protection training and they attend
regular safeguarding reviews. At least half of staff have Fire
Warden training. Fire drills are carried out at least six times
per year.
All policies regarding safeguarding are updated yearly and
parents/carers can request a copy if required from the school
office

The School Curriculum
Ward Jackson Church of England Primary School aims to teach
a broad and balanced curriculum which includes twelve national
curriculum subjects.
The core subjects are: Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Religious
Education, (RE) and Information and Communication Technology
(ICT).
The foundation subjects are: History, Geography, Music, Art,
Design & Technology (DT), Physical Education (PE) and
personal, social, Health & Community Education (PSHCE). All
subjects are differentiated to meet individual pupil’s needs.
The majority of lessons are linked by a creative topic theme
and parents receive a copy of their child’s class topic sheet
every half term. Your child will be taught a Literacy and
Numeracy lesson each day as well as a Basic Skills lesson.
The number of hours of teaching time for Key Stage One
pupils is approximately 25 hours per week, less time taken for
the daily act of worship and playtimes. The number of hours of
teaching time for Key Stage Two is approximately 26.5 hours
per week, less time taken for the daily act of worship and
playtime.
The school has a Home School Agreement which is shared
with new parents and pupils. Your child will bring a piece of
homework home once per week. School puts a strong emphasis
on those and appreciates parents support.
Religious Education and Worship
Religious Education is taught by school within the framework
of the Anglican tradition using Blackburn and Durham diocese
syllabus as a core for planning and teaching. There is a daily
act of Worship in school. Prayers are also said in every class.
In accordance with the 1988 Education Reform Act, parents
have the right to withdraw their child from attending religious
education lessons and collective worship. As we are an “Aided”
Church of England School, governors hope that your child will
take part in all religious activities. Religious Education is an
important part of children’s education as it broadens their
spiritual outlook through an understanding of world religion.
This understanding will help them in all aspect of every day life
and prepare them for their responsibilities as adults of the
future.
School places a strong emphasis on the nurturing of children.
Christian morals are reflected in our six Golden Rules and
children are given lots of opportunity to explore their feelings
and understanding of situations. Every class has a quiet
reflection and prayer area where children can take time to
reflect upon the world around them.
Parents are invited to our weekly Celebration Worship every
Friday at 10.00am. Invitations are also sent home for Easter,
Harvest and Christmas celebrations held in Stranton Church.
Sex and Relationship Education
Sex and Relationship Education is taught within the Science
and PSHCE curriculum. It is approached in the manner and
style of appropriate to the age level of the children. Our aim
is to develop children’s confidence in dealing with a wide range
of relationships they will develop and the issues that arise
form them.
Resources such as Lucinda and Godfrey and SEAL are used to
support the PSHCE curriculum.
It begins in Reception as part of the ‘Ourselves’ topic. We use
correct words, ‘penis’ and vagina’ but taught in the same
context that we teach ‘stomach’ instead of ‘tummy’.
In Years 1 to 4 topics include friendship, personal space,
keeping safe, hygiene and bullying.
Year 5 is when puberty is discussed and reassurances about
body changes are given.
Year 6 repeats puberty but includes relationships and feelings
such as how to manage mood swings.
The school nurse comes into school to give the Year 5 and Year
6 children and teachers as much support as required.
If you have any questions or worries please talk to your child’s
teacher, Mrs Hilder, Schools’ PSHCE Coordinator or contact
the school nurse. (See Page 7 for contact details).
Children with Special Needs
School’s policy for Special Educational Needs takes full
account of the Code of Practice.
Any pupil who is not making expected progress is monitored
closely by staff. If concerns continue then, after consultation
with parents, the child will be placed on the Special Needs
Register at School Action (SA). The action is for the class
teacher to give the child extra support planned through an
Individual Education Plan (I.E.P) to ensure that progress is
appropriate and achievable for the child.
If the child makes progress they may be removed from the
register. However, if concerns continue, then school may
request advice and/or support from an agency outside of the
school. For example School’s Speech and Language Therapist
or Educational Psychologist. If this was necessary then the
child will be placed on the register at School Action Plus (SA+).
If a child does not make adequate progress at SA+ then all
agencies involved may, with parental agreement, make a
request to the Local Authority (LA) for a Statutory
Assessment. If the LA agrees to carry out a full assessment
for the child’s needs then a statement may be drawn up which
details the child’s specific needs and the support which is
necessary in order for those needs to be met.
Accessibility
School is accessible to children and adults with disabilities. An
Accessibility Plan is in place to ensure that accessibility is
monitored and considered when school is being repaired or is
having new building projects.
Inclusion and Parental Support
Ward Jackson Church of England Primary School is committed
to being a fully inclusive school. We operate a ‘no exclusion’
policy as we believe in fully supporting a child who may be
experiencing problems.
Mrs Hilder is employed by Governors as a key link between
parents and school. Her role includes supporting the inclusive
ethos of the school advising parents and children on
attendance, illness and behaviour issues. Also, as Parent
Support Advisor, Mrs Hilder works closely with parents and
carers.
She can advise on a wide range of family
responsibilities such as nurturing, health and finances and
successfully runs courses with parents who want to improve
their skills such as ‘Cooking with Dad’ and nurturing
programmes.
Mrs Hilder is fully trained to lead ‘Befriending’ which is one to
one time of approximately 20 minutes per week where she joins
the child in a chosen activity or game. She also runs weekly
FRIENDS programme which brings small groups of children
together to explore the challenges of friendships through fun
based activities and games.
Attendance
It is everyone’s aim that each child comes to school on time
every day. For a variety of reasons however, this is not always
possible and school would appreciate it if parents would follow
the following procedures:
If Your Child Is Late For School
The school playground gates open at 8.40am (8.35am on wet
days) and closes at 8.45am. A child arriving after that time
will come to the main school entrance and parents will be asked
to sign the child in to school with the Late Entry Book.
If Your Child Is Absent From School
Parents/carers are expected to telephone school or send a
note on the first day of their child’s absence. This will allow
school to interpret the category of absence. If information is
not received, Mrs Hilder will telephone parents/carers to
discover why the child is not at school.
Requests To Withdraw A Child From School
This must be made in writing to the Class Teacher or by a
personal visit to the school. Parents will be asked to sign the
Signing Out Book.
Holidays
Applications forms for leave of absence can be obtained from
the school office. Parents are required to complete the form
and return it to school for authorisation by the Headteacher.
Prior to authorisation your child’s percentage attendance will
be taken into consideration, a copy of the application will be
taken for school records and the original will be returned home
informing of the outcome.
Behaviour and Discipline
School would hope that children develop their own standards of self
discipline and we promote this by means of positive encouragement.
Children are praised and rewarded daily. School’s six Golden Rules
underpin our high expectations and are followed successfully by
children from Nursery to Year 6.
Golden Rules:
1.
We are gentle - We do not hurt others
2.
We are kind and helpful - We do not hurt anybody’s
feelings
3.
We listen - We do not interrupt
4.
We are honest - We do not cover up the truth
5.
We work hard - We do not waste our own or other’s time
6.
We look after property - We do not waste or damage
things
The Golden Rules are displayed in every classroom and key areas
around school. We strive to be consistent in their use and children
are rewarded via Friday’s ‘Golden Time’ for following the rules all
week.
Anti bullying
Governors, staff pupils, parents and carers have a collective
responsibility to ensure that school takes all measures to
prevent bullying as well as knowing how to act upon bullying
incidents.
School takes this responsibility seriously. Having consulted with
children, staff and parent clear guidelines on the prevention of
bullying, the action to be taken if bullying occurs and what the
outcome would be, are set out in schools’ Behaviour and Discipline
Policy, a copy of which can be obtained from the school office.
Emergencies, Illness and Medication
If children become ill in school it is normal practice for a named person
on the contact sheet to be contacted to take the child home.
Accordingly, it is desirable that working parents give the school a work’s
telephone number through which they can be contacted and the address
of a close relative or neighbour who would be willing to take in the sick
child (second contact). The same information is essential for those
occasions when a child is involved in an accident at school and may require
hospital treatment. On these latter occasions the school will sometimes
adopt emergency procedures to have a child admitted to hospital but
obviously we would wish parents to be contacted at once.
Medicines
We are unable to administer medicines for the common illnesses such as
cold, sore throats.
However where a child suffers from a chronic condition such as severe
asthma, diabetes, epilepsy etc, parents are asked to contact school’s
First Aiders so that arrangements can be made to administer specific
drugs.
Guidelines from the School Nurse in relation to medicines to be taken
‘three times a day’ state that the fist dose is given to the child before
school, a second dose immediately the child returns from school and a
third dose given in the evening. This prevents the need for medication to
be brought into school. If your child does require medication in the
middle of the day this must be brought in and administered by the parent
/guardian at the given time.
Pupils diagnosed with asthma must inform the school as soon as possible
and complete ‘the prescribed medication in schools’ forms. It will also be
necessary to provide the school with a spare inhaler for emergency
purposes. Pupils should ensure that they also have their inhaler with
them in school at all times.
School Meals
A free meal is supplied to some children by reason of the
parents’ income level in accordance with scales laid down by the
local authority.
If you think your child may be entitled to free meals please
contact the school or the Children’s Services Department, Civic
Centre, Hartlepool. School ensures that children receiving
free school meals cannot be distinguished from other children.
Paid meals are also available at a cost of £1.90 per day (£9.50
per week). Parents wishing to use this service should contact
the school and make the necessary arrangements. Dinner
money must be paid on Mondays if meals are required. If you
wish to change your child’s meal arrangements then the school
office needs to be notified at the end of each school term.
Dinner money envelopes can be collected from the school
office.
Those Parent and Carers who are considering a school lunch for
their child are more than welcome to arrange a time to come
into school to sample some of the very delicious food that is
prepared fresh every day by our cook, Shirley Moon and her
team.
Transition
Year 6
Once your child enters Year 6 they will receive a secondary
application pack from the Local Authority (LA). There will be a
common application form (CAF1) in your pack on which you will
have the opportunity to express three preferences for any
secondary school, whether it is in Hartlepool or another
authority.
There will also be a booklet which explains the different types
of schools in Hartlepool, the partner primary system, and the
co-ordinated admissions process that ensures all children are
offered a school place at the same time. Some schools receive
more application’s than they have places so authorities have a
process to decide which children get a place and which have to
go to another school. These arrangements must be fair and
unbiased and follow the conditions set by central government.
Ward Jackson C of E Primary School is a linked partner
primary school with Dyke House Sports and Technology
College, but this does not mean that your child has to attend
this school, nor does it guarantee your child a place. In the
event that there are more applications for the secondary
school than there are places available, priority is given to pupils
attending a linked partner primary school and living in the
admission zone of that primary school.
It is very important that you look at the admissions criteria of
your preferred schools to see whether you are likely to get a
place. There is no guarantee that the Authority will be able to
offer you one of your preferred schools.
Nursery to Reception Transition
To ensure the smooth transition of Nursery pupils to
Reception, school’s Foundation Stage Leader organises four
weekly sessions, towards the end of Summer Term, where
nursery children spend a full morning with the Reception staff
and pupils. On the final session the child and parent are
invited to stay for a school lunch.
School Council
School puts great emphasis on pupil voice in that all children
get the opportunity to have their say in the way in which school
operates. Two school councillors are elected every September
by each class. The School Council is supported by Mrs Hilder.
They meet every two weeks and children’s ideas and
suggestions are put forward.
The school Suggestion Box is another way for children to put
their thoughts across to the School Council. Our school cook
encourages pupils to communicate with her about school lunch
by leaving a suggestion book out at the main entrance. Cook
also gets invited to the School Council meetings.
Children take their School Council role very seriously and they
often meet with pupils from other schools. They have even
met with the Mayor of Hartlepool as they continue to learn
just how important their voice can be.
Parent Teacher Association
This is an organisation formed with the purpose of holding
various fund raising events during the year to buy Christmas
and Easter gifts for the children and to contribute towards
books and equipment etc which school could not otherwise
afford.
The PTA would welcome new members so if you have time to

Complaints Process/Procedure
The Local Authority has established a procedure for
considering complaints from parents relating to the school
curriculum, the Charging and Remission Policy of the school and
Religious Education and Collective Worship.
If there is a cause for concern, parents should raise the
matter with the class teacher. If the situation is not resolved
then parents should make an appointment to see the
Headteacher. If this fails to come to a satisfactory conclusion
then a written complaint must be made the Governing Body via
the Chair of Governors. If parties are unable to come to an
agreement parents may take their complaint to the Local
Authority.
A copy of the schools Complaints Policy and Procedures can be
obtained from the school office.
