Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Cincinnati Development Director Job Description Summary: The Development Director is responsible for the planning and implementation of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Cincinnati’s total development program. It is the Development Director’s primary responsibility to increase the number of donors and dollars to assure effective, efficient operation of the House and to maintain excellent donor stewardship. Reports to: Executive Director Supervises: Events Manager, Director of Planned Giving, Communications Manager, Development Coordinator and Administrative Assistant Job Qualifications: 1) Bachelor’s degree or related education/experience; 2) Three to five years of related work experience, including knowledge of marketing and public relations; 3) Comprehensive fundraising experience, including personal cultivation and closing of major gifts; 4) Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills; 5) Proven experience building and nurturing donor relationships; 6) Proven track record of building and managing teams; 7) Prefer experience working with a board of trustees and volunteers; 8) Computer proficiency. Position Requirements: 1. Annual Fund: Plan and implement Ronald McDonald House’s annual development plan and annual fund case with input from the Executive Director and Board of Trustees. Develop and implement activities and communications to proactively grow the fund development of the House. Work with the Executive Director to manage bottom-line objectives for developing revenue for the House to meet or exceed annual projections. Monitor donations to the House in each budget category. Devise ways to move donors to higher levels through stewardship. Assure timely and appropriate donor recognition. Development Director Page 2 2. Major Gifts: Develop relationships with major individual, corporate and foundation donors; prepare proposals and make and close donor asks. Work with Grantwriting Specialist on foundation proposals. 3. Annual Room and Family Sponsorships: Coordinate the House’s annual Adopta-Room and Adopt-a-Family programs, including solicitation calls to renew current donors and recruiting new donors to achieve revenue goals. Maintain appropriate promotional materials for these programs. 4. Direct Mail: Coordinate the House’s direct mail program by working with Lautman Maska Neill & Company, a direct mail consulting firm. Assure revenues and new donors are maximized and expenses are in line with budget. 5. Planned Giving: Work with the Director of Planned Giving to increase the number of planned gifts made to the House and to appropriately steward planned giving donors. 6. Staff Liaison: Serve as the staff liaison to the board’s Development Committee, including helping the committee to prioritize and accomplish their work. Assist Executive Director with assigning board members to serve on this committee and recruiting additional qualified members from the tri-state area. 7. Database Management: Develop a working knowledge of Exceed, the House’s donor database, and work with the development team to assure its optimal use. 8. Prospect Research: Conduct prospect research to recruit new donors and upgrade current donors. Conduct ratings to prioritize donor prospects. 9. McDonald’s Donation Boxes: Oversee the McDonald’s donation box program by working with Development Coordinator to ensure success. Communicate with owner/operators regarding results of third-party canister program. 10. Stewardship: Responsible for stewardship of all House donors. Develop individualized stewardship and maintain a process to assure donors receive professional, timely written responses of appreciation and gratitude. Recognize donors in the newsletter, annual report, in donor recognition sites in the House and at events (e.g. NPD, appreciation lunch, etc). Ensure that gratitude is personalized and reflects the House’s brand and values. 11. Strategic Planning: Assist with strategic planning and other important RMH issues at the Senior Management level. Development Director Page 3 12. Compliance: Assure that all fund-raising related activities and records are consistent with board policy and comply with applicable state and federal laws. 13. Leadership: Select, develop, empower, motivate, appraise and (as needed) discipline direct reports. Oversee and provide strategic input on House fundraising events. Communicate relevant information to staff and participate in staff meetings. Actively participate as a member of the Senior Management Team. 14. Budgeting: Project, manage and evaluate development department operational budget. Use budget resources judiciously. 15. Professional Development: Pursue opportunities for professional development as needed to increase job effectiveness. 16. Public Relations: Promote Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Cincinnati by speaking to groups and organizations as requested. Provide guidance to the Communications Manager to ensure we capitalize on opportunities to increase awareness about our mission. Get to know guest families so as to best share their stories and the need for our mission with others. 17. Staff and Volunteer Interaction: Work as a team member with all staff at Ronald McDonald House, treating fellow staff members with respect and sensitivity to the requirements of their jobs. Other Responsibilities: Execute other responsibilities as requested by the Executive Director.
