Connecting VPN behind RV0XX Routers How to set up Windows VPN server behind RV0XX small business routers This document will explain how to configure RV042, RV082 and RV016 small business routers to forward IP protocol 47 GRE to an internal PPTP server. This is not to allow router based PPTP connections; which this feature may be enabled under the VPN tab. This method is assuming that the server is running RRAS (Routing and Remote Access) and VPN connections are allowed to the server or ADS Domain. What PPTP protocol uses: There are only two requirements needed to enable PPTP to work across our routers. 1. Port 1723 2. IP Protocol 47 (GRE) NOTE: this will not show how to configure RRAS or any other server based VPN termination service. Step 1. Log into the RV series router and navigate to “Setup > Forwarding” Under the “Service” drop down menu select “PPTP (1723)” under the “IP Address” enter the IP address of the server hosting the VPN service and enable the rule, then click “Add to List” Save settings. Under “System Management > Bandwidth Management” we are going to set the Type to “Rate Control” NOTE: Bandwidth settings should be set to current ISP service speeds. I have a single T1 line connecting the router to the internet. Now we will define what to control. Leave the “Interface” blank. This will tell the service to allow any request from any WAN connection to pass. Under “Service” select GRE, then define the IP address of the server as a range (see screenshot).
