This has been our Advent Wreath for a number of years already. It is one of our old treasures. Pope Francis has dedicated section III of Chapter Four of his Exhortation on The Joy of the Gospel to the Common Good and Peace. He teaches us that progress in Peace depends on four principles. Pope Francis gives us something new to celebrate this Advent: four principles of Peace. The four principles are: 1) Time is greater than space. 2) Unity prevails over conflict. 3) Realities are more important than ideas. 4) The whole is greater than the part. Time is greater than space. It takes time for a people to be a family, to be a faith community, to be a nation. Families can fight over who gets their parent’s home. Parishioners can fight over who sits in which pew or who gets which space for meetings. Nations continue to fight over control of territory. Working together to build families, to provide adequate housing, to share available space requires time. Leaders of nations need to work so that all peoples have a rightful place. This work takes even more time. I hope these examples help us understand the message of Pope Francis. May we learn to give the time required to have peaceful families, peace in our parish and world. The Infant Jesus brings peace. May our Lord grant them everlasting life.
