Unit Purpose
In this unit of competency you will learn to communicate clearly and accurately with others
using oral, visual, pictorial and written communication techniques. You will also learn to
receive and convey job instructions, work safety information, personal and workplace
administration information, and to participate in workplace meetings.
Pre-requisites
PREREQUISITES are subjects which you must have successfully completed before
you are allowed to enrol in this subject. Most subjects do not have
prerequisites and you may enrol in them without having done any other subjects.

Requirements to successfully complete this unit of competency
To achieve this unit of competency you must demonstrate the ability to perform the following
workplace communication activities.
You will gather, receive and convey spoken, written, visual and pictorial work information and
instructions and participate in workplace meetings.
In particular you must be able to:





follow Occupational Health and Safety procedures
obtain work instructions or directions from supervisor and complete the tasks
successfully
interpret signage accurately
convey information to other workers
fill out workplace documents accurately

You must also be able to demonstrate knowledge of:




workplace communication methods and procedures
construction industry signage
workplace documentation
meeting processes and procedures
You are also required to supply and wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and follow the
relevant Work Method Statements during the practical components of this unit of
competency.
The following approved Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn when required:







overalls (or approved work shirt and trousers)
hearing protection (ear muffs/ear plugs)
respiratory protection
clear safety glasses
safety boots (steel toe-caps)
hard hat
broad-brimmed hat or legionnaire’s hat
It is important to remember that the laws protecting the Health and Safety of people at work
apply to students who attend TAFE Colleges, either part time or full time. These laws
emphasize the need to take reasonable steps to eliminate or control risk at work (this
includes a TAFE College/Campus). You are encouraged to help in eliminating hazards by
reporting to your teacher or other college/campus staff, anything that you think may be a
risk to you or other people.
Your teacher will encourage you to assist in hazard identification and elimination, and to
devise control measures for any risks to yourself and other people that may arise during
practical exercises. The OHS Act 2000 and OHS Regulation 2001 require that teachers and
students take reasonable steps to control and monitor risk in the classroom, workshop or
workplace.
