Pre-requisites PREREQUISITES are subjects which you must have successfully completed before you are allowed to enrol in this subject. Most subjects do not have prerequisites and you may enrol in them without having done any other subjects. Requirements to successfully complete this unit of competency To achieve this unit of competency you must demonstrate the ability to perform the following occupational health and safety activities. You will work safely on a general construction worksite. In particular you must be able to: identify and report on construction work hazards and controls prepare safe work method statements (SWMS) select personal protective equipment (PPE) select safety signage and/or protective barriers select fire-fighting equipment evacuate a site © NSW TAFE Commission 2009 Unit of competency: BCGCM1001B Date: 12-May-2009 Page: 1 NEW SOUTH WALES TECHNICAL AND FURTHER EDUCATION COMMISSION STUDENT ASSESSMENT GUIDE - UNIT OF COMPETENCY You must also be able to demonstrate knowledge of: Occupational Health and Safety Regulations common construction work hazards and control measures safe work method statements (SWMS) personal protective equipment (PPE) safety signage and barriers fire fighting equipment and procedures You are also required to supply and wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and follow the relevant Work Method Statements during the practical components of this unit of competency. The following approved Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn when required: overalls (or approved work shirt and trousers) hearing protection (ear muffs/ear plugs) respiratory protection clear safety glasses safety boots (steel toe-caps) hard hat broad-brimmed hat or legionnaire’s hat It is important to remember that the laws protecting the Health and Safety of people at work apply to students who attend TAFE Colleges, either part time or full time. These laws emphasize the need to take reasonable steps to eliminate or control risk at work (this includes a TAFE College/Campus). You are encouraged to help in eliminating hazards by reporting to your teacher or other college/campus staff, anything that you think may be a risk to you or other people. Your teacher will encourage you to assist in hazard identification and elimination, and to devise control measures for any risks to yourself and other people that may arise during practical exercises. The OHS Act 2000 and OHS Regulation 2001 require that teachers and students take reasonable steps to control and monitor risk in the classroom, workshop or workplace.
