Staff –Kelly Nelson reports for the following staff members: Paula Houde: Kate Stinnett, a North Woodstock resident, recently donated an iPad for use in the classroom and also gave Mrs. Houde $25 for the purchase of apps for the iPad. We have just started using it this week. The children are very excited and extremely appreciative. Megan Houle, a student from PSU will finish her practicum in 2nd grade this week. Aside from being an extra set of hands in the classroom during Math and Literacy blocks, she taught a Social Studies lesson requiring students to cut out magazine pictures they found interesting and define them as a want or need or in some cases, both. Her Science lesson required students to work together in small groups to make examples of simple machines by using their bodies. She also created a mini-unit on catapults which was used as an enrichment activity. Megan has been a welcome addition to both classrooms and will be greatly missed. The class field trip to Squam Lakes Science Center has been scheduled for June 7th. We will leave school at about 9am and return by 2:15. Mr. Slater, our Drama teacher: 7 High-schoolers and 9 Middle-schoolers will perform You're A Good Man Charlie Brown this weekend in the High school gym. Our students have been hard at work over the past two months learning their lines, songs, and choreography for this fun and exciting musical! We've also had the opportunity to work with PSU theatre and music students as choreographer and music director. Shows are Thursday at 7pm, Friday at 7pm, Saturday at 1pm, and Sunday at 4pm. Tickets are $6 for students and $8 for adults. We hope to see you there! Lori McGinley: As an extended community project, Tylar Burrows chose to make Shelter Packs for victims of domestic violence who are relocated to safe shelters through the Voices Against Violence agency in Plymouth NH. Shelter packs are just a collection of necessities given to these people to help make the transition a little smoother. Many of the shelter residents are relocated to safety without being able to bring much with them from their homes. Tylar collected used pillow cases from staff and area hotels. She cut and sewed them to make large drawstrings bags. These would hold the contents but also be able to still be used as a pillow case, or maybe a laundry bag. Since they were being repurposed, she tie-dyed them to make them ‘happier’ and more colorful. She used some bright ribbons to create the drawstrings. Tie-dying was her favorite part! Meanwhile, Tylar distributed a letter to several local businesses explaining the project and asking for donations of specific items for 50 shelter pack bags. Price Chopper was by far the most generous! Tylar stuffed bags with shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, dental floss, deodorant, hot chocolate mix, granola bars, gum, Q-tips, hair ties, puzzle books, cards, tea, and a variety of other supplies as well as some Frisbees or stuffed animals. She had learned that there are many children in these shelters, as well as adults. It was a bit of a time crunch but in April, Susan, the outreach educator from Voices Against Violence was coming to the school to talk to my HS Health classes. She would also be meeting with Tylar, and collecting the shelter packs. Susan told us a lot about the shelters, Tylar thought it was ‘very sad’ and maybe ‘very lonely’. Being a big sister, she was very concerned about the kids. I am nominating her for Student of the Month but just wanted to share her work on this project with everyone. She worked tenaciously on this 2 days a week during block 1 and accomplished the goal on time. Well done Tylar! This week she got a thank you note from Susan, “Thank you for thinking about the victims in your community and for offering your support, it will be much appreciated.” Joe Chateauneuf: Jump Rope for Heart was a huge success. Nearly 70 K-5 students participating and they raised over $3000 for the American Heart Association. I believe this was the 8th Jump rope for heart event, and the most participation to date. Dori Weeden: Members of the LW staff will be participating in the 5K Rock and Roll Race in Concord, NH on May 17th. So far we have 7 runners representing LW! The registration $ goes to the Concord Hospital Cancer Center. Virginia Perkins: The 5th graders, DARE graduation will be on May 31, 2012 @ 6:00PM. (This is a change of date from what was reported last meeting) The Mexican Fiesta for Grades K-4 is going to be on Thursday June 7th during the school day in the EMPR. Wendy Hamill: The majority of the class of 2013 participated in the Super Mini Junior College Tour Marathon on May 3. The group of students had a 1 hour tour of the following colleges: NHTI, Southern New Hampshire University, Saint Anselm's College and Colby Sawyer College. Though college campuses were quiet due to it being finals week, the students were able to get a good idea of the different types of schools and campuses and what each had to offer. Many students appeared to favor NHTI and SNHU. The students (chaperoned by Wendy Hamill and Sean O'Brien) enjoyed lunch at Jerome's Deli in Manchester and finished their long, long day with enormous sundaes at the ice cream shoppe on Main Street in Plymouth, all courtesy of the awarded grant. Parts of the tour(s) were videotaped and will be edited into a presentation for College Compact of New Hampshire, the grantors of our mini tour. The presentation will be showcased at a fall conference hosted by College Compact of NH. The real benefit of the tour was viewing the different types of colleges, learning about admissions criteria, college costs, and all the resources available to college students. More than likely, if any of the students who participated in the tour weren't thinking about attending college before, they are now! Congratulations to Kate McAfee and Kate McCrohan who have been accepted to St. Paul's Advanced Studies Summer Program. The 2 students will be attending the 5 week program this summer. Kate McAfee's focus was on art through the use of technology and Kate McCrohan's focus is on History and Leadership. Barbara Burhoe: 10 MS Chorus students were selected to participate in the Middle School Northern District Music Festival, which was held last Saturday at Kennett Middle School in Conway.
