BLACKBURN CATHEDRAL
JUNE 2014
CATHEDRAL DIARY
The Dean’s Post Script
1. The Demolition of St Mary’s House took place at the end of May. I saw
part of it fall to the ground after much of the rest had been carefully
dismantled for use later in the development. St Mary’s House has played a
big part in Cathedral life community as well as providing living accommodation
for others who are very much still alive (Dr. Bertalot!). To see such demolition
will be painful for some but in this instance it would be foolish to stop the clock
when we have so much to gain. As a community – and as part of our
contribution to the life of our town – we are investing ourselves with resources
hitherto undreamed of!
2. Inconvenience. Of course, there is inconvenience attached to every
development and the commercial sector of Blackburn has made its views
starkly clear about the proposed closure of Railway Road.
I am aware of the difficulties caused by no parking on the site and the other
issues associated with the boarding up of the South side of the Cathedral. It’s
been two months now but I am impressed and delighted by the stoic attitude
of those who use the Cathedral regularly. Sunday numbers have not fallen
though the café has felt the pressure from restricted access. Thank you so
much for your patience with all this. Two months down; seventeen to go!
Please do remember to use the Café in the Crypt when you can! We have
excellent staff there who deserve our support.
3. Our Annual Confirmation takes place this month – on 22nd June at
10.30am (There will be no 9am Parish Communion on that day). It will be
taken by Bishop Julian – his first at The Cathedral. Do please give him your
support as well as the candidates. Please pray for them:
Janet McCrimmon
Kerry Standring
Patricia Anne Downham
Yuqian Annett Lao
Zixin Tia Luo
Dianne Lawson
Harris Lawson Scarborough
Joseph William Dearden
Joshua Lee Holden
and Mihaela Mladin, to be Received into the Church of England.
4. The Revd Dr Michael Kirby, our Cathedral Curate, is to be ordained priest
on 28th June at 10.30am in The Cathedral, alongside other priest candidates
from the diocese. He will celebrate The Eucharist for the first time at 8am on
Sunday 29th June in The Jesus Chapel. He will also celebrate The Cathedral
Eucharist for the first time on Sunday 13th July at 10.30am. Please remember
him in your prayers as he approaches another milestone in his vocational
career.
We have all been so fortunate to have Mike on the staff. His time is very
precious (for he also has a fulltime lecturing job!) but he is incredibly generous
and you will know how he spreads himself in The Lord’s service.
5. Homelessness. Thank you for your continuing generosity with Foodbank
gifts and immediate food for the homeless. Of the latter, on Sunday 1st June
we had 18 visits from homeless persons, 14 of whom were given food. There
was not enough for the last 4. The need is as great as ever so please
continue your contributions.

Any Volunteers?
First it was Canon Chivers echoing a concern from President Obama. Now it
is Simon Thurley, Chief Executive of English Heritage who has warned us
about the decline in the numbers in volunteers. Put simply, with the pension
age rising to 68 and beyond, people have to work longer before they can
choose what they wish to do. On top of this is the uncertainty surrounding the
future of the pension – all of which places a marker against the way
volunteers might be available to support institutions like The National Trust,
English Heritage and of course The Church of England. Thurley will no longer
factor in the value of volunteers in his future balance sheets. That is wise.
Neither do we at The Cathedral. However, we are aware of the huge amount
that volunteers give us – on the Welcome Desk especially but also with
stewarding and many other jobs.
Cathedrals everywhere rely heavily on volunteer help – as does every faith
group – and the English Cathedrals are about to commission further research
to show how much cathedrals contribute to the local and national economy.
The first survey – perhaps 10 years ago – showed a massive contribution to
the national economy and voluntary help was at the heart of that contribution.
Will it continue to be in the future?
One of my colleagues has pointed out the big difference between the way a
cathedral discharges its responsibilities with a mixture of professionals and
volunteers and the way an average parish operates: mainly with volunteers.
The two are very different animals. Who knows what the future might hold for
either alternative of ‘being church’?
We are still fortunate in the Cathedral with our large body of volunteers.
Perhaps we are just at the end of the golden age of retirees who enjoy a
generous pension. Whatever the case we are hugely grateful to all who
volunteers, either as musicians, server, stewards, welcomers or flower
arrangers. We are doing very well – particularly in the Stewards Department
which saw a big increase in new and younger talent this year.
But can we rely upon it? Yes, I think we can. In a Christian culture,
volunteers see their work in terms of ministry, vocation – sharing in the work
of Christ in making the Good News of God’s generosity known to all. This
ministry is not just exercised within the Cathedral but also in the high street,
beyond the church’s threshold. We have members of the congregation who
work in the justice system, in charity outlets, in local government, the
Samaritans, the Foodbank – to name but a few. They receive no pay but they
work as leaven in the lump to make the difference. This isn’t just a bonus
which The Chapter might add to its balance sheet! It is essential to our
Christian growth and witness as individuals. People are responding to prayer
– to promptings within and without – to answer God’s call and thus grow in the
understanding of their faith. And there is great joy in it too: Christ promised
that!
However, we don’t expect our volunteers to toil forever! We all need a break –
even if it is only a Sabbath day rest. What the recent enthronement of
stewards showed us was that there are enough younger volunteers to take
over the baton from those who have toiled for some time. Long may it
continue!
Yours sincerely
