Overview
Sports and entertainment marketing is a specialized course designed to offer students an opportunity to gain knowledge and develop skills related to the growing sports and entertainment industry. Students will develop skills in the areas of facility design, merchandising, advertising, public relations/publicity, event marketing, sponsoring, ticket distribution, and career opportunities as they relate to the sports and entertainment industry.
You will be expected to participate, read and respond to classroom topics from the textbook, current events, guest speakers, research sports and entertainment topics and leaders in the industry. Each student with a partner will relocate a sports team and create a comprehensive portfolio that will be presented formally both in writing and orally as the semester exam and final exam.
Class Participation
Everyone should participate in the classroom discussions as much as possible. The more we talk about the subject among ourselves, the more we can all learn.
Honors Requirements
In order to make the Sports & Entertainment Marketing Class an Honors Credit, you will be required to do the following additional work. You will be given the choice of seven different activities; you have to choose five of them. The Oral Presentation and the Marketing Plan fulfill some of the Honors criteria and are required in the normal course as well. The seven items include:
1.
Evaluate a professional event that charges admission. Example: Play Musical, College Football Game – discretion left up to the teacher. (12.1, 7.1, 7.2, &7.3)
2.
Complete a Sponsorship Proposal Blueprint. (11.1, 11.2, 11.3, 11.6, 8.1, 8.2, &8.3)
3.
Read a book by Phil Knight or Mike Veeck. (10.3, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 2.1, 2.2, & 2.3)
4.
Complete five article reviews from the Sports Business Journal or another Sports Publication. (Standard 11)
5.
Analyze a Sports Movie – write a two to three page essay on the movie and the history of the movie. (5.1,
5.2, 5.3, 4.3, 4.2, &4.1)
6.
Write and conduct a Sports & Entertainment Survey. (11.12, 11.13, 11.16, 11.1, &11.2)
7.
Conduct an Interview with someone in the Sports & Entertainment Industry. Example: YMCA, College
Football, Athletic Trainer – discretion left up to the teacher.

Completion of Assignments
Most assignments cannot be turned in late because they are an integral part of the daily work and the on-going sports portfolio. All late work will start at a 69(F).
Supplies
Come to class prepared and ready to work each day—notebook paper, pencil and pen, and a three-ring binder for class handouts are needed. You must have your Agenda in order to be able to leave the classroom.

The student will evaluate the significance and components of sports and entertainment as a viable industry.
2.
The student will recognize the value of product research and development in sports and entertainment.
3.
The student will evaluate the considerations involved in facility design.
4.
The student will interpret the importance of all aspects of product planning in sports and entertainment.
5.
The student will examine the role of advertising as a promotional tool in sports and entertainment.
6.
The student will compare public relations and advertising to learn the importance of generating positive publicity and avoiding negative publicity.
7.
The student will recognize event planning and other forms of sales promotion as components of the sports and entertainment promotional mix.
8.
The student will explore various facets of sponsorship in sports and entertainment including the acquisition of sponsors and sponsorship of events.
9.
The student will evaluate ticket-marketing strategies, which include design, distribution, and sales.
10.
The student will apply and relate other academic subject matter to sports and entertainment marketing.
11.
The student will apply organizational and leadership skills.
12.
The student will analyze how sports and entertainment marketing principles are applied in a work-based learning experience.

They must use their Student ID number they can share with you for you to check their grades. I believe that if we work together, your student will be successful in this class.
