The Army spokesperson Col.Philip Aguer has reaffirmed government’s
commitment to support humanitarian needs of conflict-affected populations in
the different parts of the country.
The commitment comes after several humanitarian aid agencies pulled out of
Unity state on Friday for fear of reprisal attacks.
Aguer said there is need for coordination between the Humanitarian aid
organizations and authorities on the ground to ease humanitarian access.

News just in indicates ongoing hostilities in Unity state have now forced all nongovernmental organizations and UN Agencies to evacuate staff from Leer and
other locations.
UN humanitarian coordinator Toby Lanzer says the ongoing insecurity has left
more than 300,000 civilians without emergency relief such as food aid and
medical services.
He says the humanitarian response South OF Bentui in Unity state has been
grounded to a halt at a time when food stocks are depleted and the population
is relying heavily on food aid.
The Humanitarian coordinator is calling for assurances from all parties to the
conflict to allow aid workers access to the populations in need of assistance
without delay.

On Friday, MSF pulled out its entire international staff out of Leer County due to
the escalating clashes between government and the SPLA in opposition forces.
Paul Critchley, MSF mission head in South Sudan, has called on the parties to
the conflict to respect the international humanitarian law and show
unconditional respect for the patients, medical facilities and staff.

“MSF provides emergency medical humanitarian support to populations in
need; we would hope that we continue to do that and parties to the conflict
respect international humanitarian law and continue to allow humanitarian
such as MSF to provide emergency humanitarian support to civilians in need.”
Meanwhile, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is concerned
about the welfare of the people who have reportedly fled northern Unity State
in the wake of the growing tension there.
Pawel Krzysiek (Read as She-zik), the Spokesperson of the ICRC in South Sudan,
says his organization is particularly concerned about the young children who are
the first victims of conflict.

“Leer is the place where the ICRC has been carrying one of its largest food
operations in the world, assisting on a regular basis 120,000 people and for
the time being this operation has been put on halt because with the growing
movement of population from Leer, we have to right now reassess our next
move, what is the best way to readopt our emergency response to the
changing situation there.”

In a related development, Ettie Higgins, UNICEF deputy executive director
UNICEF, says majority of the children under five arriving at the Poc sites in Unity
state are traumatized.

“in fact more of the new arrivals are under the age of five, they are very traumatized and
have been through a very difficult time and so off course we are very concerned about
their welfare and together with our partners screening and treating all the newly arrived
children for malnutrition and vaccinating them against measles and polio. Off course we
are very concerned about the well-being of women and children and combined with
further displacements this is really a very grim picture for the children in these areas.”

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan is holding discussions with the
Government about the possibility of transferring IDPs under the UN Protection
in Wau and Bor to new locations in Unity, Jonglei and Upper Nile states.
The acting spokesperson of the UN Mission in South Sudan, Joe Contreras says,
the discussion stems from a survey that shows the IDPs in Wau and Bor are in
favor of relocating to Leer in Unity state, Akobo in Jonglei state and Pagak in
Upper Nile state. The three areas are all under the control of the SPLM/A in
Opposition.
UNMISS acting spokesperson says no agreement has been reached as yet.

“We are still in the process of discussion with the government so nothing has yet been agreed upon, and
even when those agreements are reached then we will have to make logistical arrangements and ensure
that their needs will be provided for in those particular destinations.”

The Paramount Chief of Wau County Angelo Bagari, has been gunned down this
morning at his home in Bagari Payam.
Gen. Abraham Manyuat, the police commissioner for Western Bahal El Ghazel
state WBGS Police commissioner says the chief was killed together with his wife.
A girl who was in the house at the time of the attack was injured.

“We received information that Chief Angelo Bagari, two people came and attacked him at
home, broke the door and open fire on him. In this incident he and his wife died and the
bodyguard is injured, they are brought to the hospital. The background of this incident is
around his leadership among his relatives and police are investigating this issue”.
The killing of the paramount chief has already attracted condemnation from the
public.
CEPO coordinator in WBGS Stephen Robo, described the incident as inhuman
and barbaric and urged the state government to do all it can to bring the
culprits to book.

act which led to the killing of Chief and his wife. The assassination is inhuman and a clear

The Governor Central Equatoria state, Clement Wani Konga, has launched a
reconciliation process between the Mundari and Bari communities in Central
Equatoria state.
Relations between the two communities have for the last seven years been
soured by conflicts over gazing land and water points.
Edmund Yakani, the executive Director, Community for empowerment
organization who is also responsible of coordinating the ongoing reconciliation
process, says a a road map expected to accelerate the process has been drawn.
The new roadmap is expected to consist of concrete measures for settling
competition over land and service delivery.

“the gist of the conference was reconciliation but in the process of engaging
with the parties a lot of issues emerged and the state governor, his excellency
clement Wani Konga has launched a reconciliation process between the two
counties officially and a timeline between the two counties was defined and

reconciliation.”

Peace child, a local non- governmental organization has launched a family
planning project at Warrap state hospital.
The project the first of its kind is intended to e expand access to family planning
counseling, promote safe and healthy family planning behaviors and increase
awareness of the benefits of family planning.

encouraged to have manageable families to promote peace.

“Peace start in the family if u doesn’t have manageable family how you will have peace, your only child
will be disaster to you. We are really aware, well informed that family planning is complicated in South
Sudan and it is a new concept. Women are really welcoming it but they say their husbands and the
community , so we said go and come with your husband so we tell the husband about the advantages of
having family planning.”
Over the coming months, Peace Child organization will work with partners to
scale up family planning activities as a strategy to reduce maternal mortality
rates.

In international news, The European Commission is expected to announce a
controversial proposal that EU member countries should take in refugees under
an EU quota scheme.
According to the BBC, the European Commission's migration policy, to be
announced on Wednesday, will also propose organising legal means for
migrants to come to Europe so they do not turn to traffickers.
More than 1,800 migrants have died this year in the Mediterranean, a 20-fold
increase on the same period in 2014.
The UN estimates that 60,000 people have already tried to cross the
Mediterranean this year.

In sports: Haile Gebreselassie has announced his retirement from competitive
running.
The BBC reports that the 42-year-old Ethiopian confirmed his decision after
finishing 16th in the Great Manchester Run on Sunday.
His retirement brings to an end a 25-year career in which he claimed two
Olympic gold medals, eight World Championship victories and set 27 world
records.
Gebreselassie remains the world record holder at 20,000m and the one-hour
race.
