Comments: Eli Wonch, 81, a resident of Memphis, notified the Bad
Axe Sheriff that the man found was his brother, Joseph, who would be
missing 61 years come the spring of this year. The brother worked for a
lumber camp in Caseville in the winter of 1868. He was walking with
another man along the beach. He didn't remember that man’s name.
Joseph had $100.00 in his pocket and did not reach the family home at
Wales. A few weeks later his companion notified the family that
Joseph was missing, and thought he had met with foul play. Another
person, Joseph A. Lalone of Muskegon, thought his father had
drowned.

built an addition onto the hospital. Dr. Dixon joined him in 1946. In
1971 the new hospital was built. He worked his way through medical
school. He was preceded in death by 1 son, John Wesley, and 1 sister,
Ethel. The funeral was Oct. 15. His parents were the late John Wesley
and Ida Gettel Scheurer of Sebewaing. He was the grandson of

Huron County's first traffic fatality of the year after an accident took his
life near the west village limits of Pigeon. He was traveling eastbound
on M-142 about 11:00 p.m. when he failed to negotiate the S curve at
the Caseville Rd. intersection. He crossed Caseville Rd., struck a sign,
and became airborne, before striking 2 trees. He was alone at the time.
His parents were Charles A. and Ella Dutcher Schweitzer. He was an
Owendale High School graduate, and farmed near Elkton throughout
his lifetime. He played the banjo with many music groups in the area,
most recently at the Octagon Barn Festivals. The funeral service was
Monday, Feb. 2, 1998.

recover the body of a drowned man, Johnny Prutchick, in the cut at Bay
Port Fish Co. about 6:00 p.m. He came to Pigeon at 1 year old. In

Three years later he joined Herman Winkel when Herman purchased
Bates Funeral Home. In 1944 he purchased the Winkel Funeral and
reorganized it as Shetler Funeral Home. The first year it was located
where Thumb National Bank is, and sold furniture. In 1950 he built a
chapel in conjunction with the funeral home on Paul St. He sold it to
M&M Elmer Busse. His parents, 1 brother, and 2 sisters preceded him
in death. The couple celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary June
25, 1973.
