Program Summary: The University of Florida Center for Latin American Studies and Center for
International Business Education and Research announce their summer program in Brazil. With its economy booming, Brazil ranks with China, India and Russia as one of the leading emerging markets in today's global economy. Today more than ever international companies are looking for business graduates who understand the Brazilian market and are familiar with its language and culture.
This four-week summer program (May 9-June 3) combines a course on business in Brazil with
Portuguese language training. During four weeks in Rio de Janeiro, students take business- oriented
Portuguese language instruction (at either the beginning or intermediate levels) at the Instituto Brasil-
Estados Unidos (IBEU) in the mornings. The afternoon portion of the program, hosted by the School of
Business at the Catholic University (PUC-Rio) on its campus, consists of academic lectures, discussions and readings, complemented by visits to prominent local companies. Following a general overview of the business environment, the course sessions and company visits will focus on energy-mining, mediaentertainment (including preparations for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games) and consumer markets.
Program Fee: Program Fee is approximately $3960, which does not include airfare or personal spending. It covers tuition for 6 transfer credits, housing and two meals a day with host local families, excursions in Rio, travel to and hotel rooms in Paraty.

When:
June 12 - July 23, 2011
Program Summary:
The Stone Center for Latin American Studies invites students interested in Portuguese language and
Brazilian studies to participate in a summer program in Brazil during the summer of 2011. São Paulo, the largest metropolis in Latin America, is an exciting center for fine arts, theater, music and cultural life.
This city is a medley of Brazilians from all the country's 26 states and from multiple ethnic groups
(Japanese, Italian, Jewish, Syrian and Lebanese, etc.) which makes for an exciting mix of traditions and fabulous food on every street. Plunge into the vibrant entertainment scene and explore an extraordinary nightlife. When tired of the fast pace of São Paulo, head to the beaches which are just a couple of hours away.
While São Paulo can sweep you off your feet, you need to keep standing to attend the exciting and vigorous academic program organized by Tulane and Vanderbilt Universities. In the summer of 2011 classes will be taught by a team of prominent scholars, including Emanuelle Oliveira, Associate Professor of Cinema and Luso-Brazilian and Afro-Brazilian Literature at Vanderbilt University, as well as by several professors from PUC São Paulo (Catholic University of São Paulo, one of the top rated academic institutions in Brazil). The classes will provide for immersion into Brazilian language and culture and supplemented by field trips in São Paulo and beyond.
After a first visit to Brazil, you will be tempted to go back and when you do, you will have a command of
Portuguese and an in-depth understanding of this country's people, culture and society. Such experience and knowledge may prove useful for your career aspirations. Brazil is gaining in international reputation and will host the 2014 Soccer World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics. With a thriving economy and a steady consolidation of its democracy, Brazil is one of the leading nations of the new global order. The

18th Annual Summer Program in Portuguese
Destination:
Dartmouth, Massachusetts
When:
July 5-August 4, 2011
Program Summary:
Theme for 2011: Border Points
Over the last twenty years, the question of borders has become one of primary importance for students of foreign languages and literary and cultural studies. How is the expanded discussion of borders pertinent to the Portuguese-speaking world and its diasporas, specially as it relates to political division, cultural transit, linguistic difference and socioeconomic inequality? What are the possibilities for border crossing at points that are not always recognized as being bordered: whether urban centers, academic institutions, or edges of continents whose links to other cultures, languages and spaces may not be immediately apparent on any map? Ultimately, what are the borders that all of us live on, and what kinds of learning, whether of languages, cultures, narratives or other alternative ways of knowing, will be necessary in this century to prepare us to cross over?
