Brazilian Portuguese Essay Competition Due to the successful essay competition this year Canning House has teamed up with the Embassy of Brazil to launch an extra competition this year in Brazilian Portuguese. This competition is aimed to challenge University students to apply their knowledge of language and structures to produce in in-depth piece of writing. Thanks to our sponsors, Rede Brasil Cultural, the 1st prize for this competition is a return flight to Brazil! Rules and Guidance 1. The competition is open to all undergraduates in the United Kingdom enrolled in a Portuguese Language University Course 2. The competition is open to any UK students learning Brazilian Portuguese as a foreign language including those from diaspora communities in the UK. 3. This year’s question is: “Outline Brazil's contribution to the modern world in terms of culture or sport and consider ways in which its standing in the world could be raised” 4. Essays must be: a) b) c) d) e) f) between 1,000 and 1,500 words long written in Portuguese on A4 paper typed or neatly handwritten accompanied by a completed entry form posted to Essay Competition, Canning House 14-15 Belgrave Square, London SW1X 8PS, and postmarked no later than 15th September 2014 or e-mailed to education-outreach@canninghouse.org 5. Candidates should ensure their names appear clearly on each page. 6. The Panel of Judges will be appointed by Canning House. The Panel consists of, Professor Tim Connell, and Maria Figueiredo-Cowan. 7. The decision of the Panel of Judges will be final. 8. The Panel of Judges reserves the right not to award the prizes if, in its opinion, none of the essays merits award. 9. All entrants may, of course, consult reference books, the internet, local libraries, etc. However, the judges will be looking for original work and any plagiarism will lead to disqualification. By signing the essay cover sheet both the entrant and the teacher/student declare the work is the entrant’s own. 10. All entries will be carefully read. Particular importance will be attached to well structured arguments, correct use of language, original thought and evidence of research on Brazil. 11. Illustrations can be included if they are relevant to the essay, but no extra credit will be given for presentation or layout. 12. The organisers of the competition urge candidates to proofread their essays carefully to avoid being penalised for minor grammatical errors. 13. Employees of Canning House, nor their relatives may enter the competition. 14. Canning House expects to announce the winning essays by early October 2014, but this will depend on the number of entries we receive. 16. Terms and conditions apply to the flight prize: a) The prize for the competition is one return flight to Brazil. This is subject to availability of flights and some dates may be unavailable. b) The e-ticket must be issued before the end of 2014. The trip can be taken in 2015, but the dates chosen at the time of issuing cannot be changed. c) The ticket is valid from any UK airport to any Brazilian airport, economy class. d) The prize does not include travel insurance, travel to or from the airport, accommodation, and personal expenditure or incidental costs. It is the responsibility of the prizewinner to ensure they have a valid passport and travel insurance and obtain any necessary vaccinations and visas for their trip. e) Events may occur that render the prize draw itself or the awarding of the prize impossible due to reasons beyond the control of the Promoter and accordingly the Promoter may at its absolute discretion vary or amend the promotion and the entrant agrees that no liability shall attach to the Promoter as a result thereof.
