TEEN SAFETY MESSAGE AUGUST 2012 “STUDENTS BEWARE: NEW LAW CAN COST YOU YOUR LICENSE IF YOU DRIVE DISTRACTED! A new Ohio law goes into effect this August 30, 2012, and ignoring it can cost you more than a ticket! The new Ohio law that bans texting and driving in our state, is especially costly to teens if that law is broken. If you are seen by law enforcement talking on your cell phone, texting, or using any type of electronic device while behind the wheel, you can be pulled over and fined. Law Enforcement will need no other reason to stop you, and violation of the law includes use of these devices while being stopped at a traffic light or stop sign. In other words, anytime you are behind the wheel your focus needs to be on the road…and not on your phone! The new law includes the following: *No texting, emailing, cell phone, video games, iPad/tablet, or hand-held GPS use while driving, even when sitting at a light or in a traffic jam. *It is a primary offense………….law enforcement needs no other reason to pull you over! *A first time offense can cost you $150 and suspension of your driver’s license for 60 days. *A second violation is a $300 fine and license suspension for one year! So it is not just a matter of safety anymore….it is the law. AUGUST 2012 “Local Law Enforcement Encourages Safe Driving this Labor Day” As the summer comes to an official end with the pending Labor Day weekend, local law enforcement will be out in full force to make sure this Holiday is a safe one in Pickaway County. As we all know, it is illegal to drink alcohol below the age of 21 in the State of Ohio. We also realize that driving a motor vehicle impaired is not only illegal, it is dangerous. This weekend will conclude the period nationwide known as “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over”. This national crackdown on impaired driving began earlier this month, and will culminate this weekend with extra patrols looking for drivers who choose to get behind the wheel impaired. Safe Communities of Pickaway County is asking students to make sure they are extra cautious this holiday weekend by not driving impaired, eliminate distractions while driving, buckle up, and drive the speed limit. Also, if you see an impaired driver… call local law enforcement or 9-1-1. Safe Communities also wishes all students good luck in the new school year. Drive Safe, and enjoy your Labor Day Holiday!
