Caruso Times A publication from the Joseph C. Caruso School First Edition, October 2012 Fourth Grade News Mrs. Weldon’s class is doing many fun things. They are doing current events. Every Friday they have a “Story of The Week” winner based on the most interesting article. They are reading the book Because of Winn Dixie. They are planning a party just like Gloria Dump in the book. As you can see, Mrs. Weldon’s class is doing a lot of fun things. By Waylon Manoes and Brendan Flanzbaum Parts. First, they greet each other. Second, they share special things. Third, they play activities together to practice specific character traits. Their class is planning to line the halls with mystery book reports by November. Another thing they are doing is planning an ice cream party to celebrate multiplication math facts. I can’t wait to see those mystery book reports in the halls next month! By Casey Lohsen and Anastacia Lewisapfelbaum I can’t believe what’s going on in Mrs. Ward and Mrs. DeVirgilio’s class. We are learning about owl pellets. We even dissected them and found bones of different rodents. That was so fantastic! Another interesting thing is that one student even found a whole spine. After working on the owl pellets, we had to wash our hands and desks. It was so much fun to do this activity. They use the laptops and go on www.arcadia.com. In these games, they play against each other. They also made an animal cell model from flour and water. They painted it when it got hard. Now you know what Mrs. McMahon and Mrs. Schleichert’s class have been doing. The meetings have three Lights!Camera!Action! Ms. Collier’s class made a movie. It was for Back to School Night to show the parents about their classroom and their day. They came up with creative ideas and kept practicing their lines. They had to be on camera. Many students in Ms. Collier’s class have stage fright, others don’t. Abby, a student is Ms. Collier’s class, does not have stage fright. When she was little, she wanted to make a movie. It’s not easy to make a movie. I would really love to see the movie they made! They started by making career books on the students’ interests. For example, Austin and Dorukhan like playing kickball outside. They also made banners/flags for a college of their choice. The students are going to research what job they want to do and see what college has it. We can’t wait to see those banners outside in the hall. They are also comparing living and nonliving things in Science class. Maybe they can write paragraphs about what they learned in Science! By Taylor Sprinvloed and Siara Cummings Have you ever gone shopping in school? Well, Ms. Shine’s class has. They earn tokens each week for things like class participation, being kind, and answering questions. On Friday mornings they get to count their tokens and shops for prizes. Doesn’t that sound like fun? They also learned how to build a computer during their technology special. I look forward to see their computers. They had to use their 4 other senses to guide them. Each student had a buddy to help them find the way. Next in science they are planning to do a Balloon Pop Experiment. We can’t wait to find out Third Grade News The third grades are off and running at Caruso School! Listen to this! Ms. Viggiano’s Class is working on telling time and skip counting, in addition to their Wounded Warrior Project where they write letters to our soldiers. They are also organizing a cupcake sale. Yum! Mrs. Longo and Ms. Paduano’s Class are concentrating on seed ideas to create small moment stories. Well, at Caruso School you can have a nice, free breakfast! Ever since this new addition, kids have been eating healthy breakfasts. Breakfast gives kids more nutrition for their school day. We have had chicken pot pie, Chinese food, baked chicken, and tacos. We still have pizza Friday’s though! Just check the menu the night before so you know if you will like the food the next day or if you should pack a home lunch. You have to wait with your class to get your lunch. Then you can ask to move to another place and sit with a friend who could be in another class. Where are the bagel bags as a choice for lunch? Where is the ice cream? How about peanut butter and jelly? We used to also get cookies and sometimes brownies, but not this year. We can’t have dressing for our salad or cream cheese or butter for our bagel. These are some of the cafeteria problems that we would like solved! Getting to Know Our New Staff! First, welcome to the J. C. Caruso Family! Students in Mrs. DeTalvo’s class and Ms. Shine’s class are going to tell all about a few of newest members. Mrs. Filipowicz: Mrs. Filipowicz was born in New Jersey. She attended Seton Hall University for four years. Some of her favorites include football (NY Jets), the color blue and Christmas. Her favorite subject is math because she loves solving problems and working with numbers. She also told us she is like a cat because she is curious. Maybe that is why her favorite author is Dr. Seuss? For fun she likes to take pictures and make scrapbooks. Mrs. Filipowicz worked as a kindergarten and 5th grade teacher before joining us. She said when she first arrived at Caruso she was a little nervous but also excited. Mrs. Filipowicz said she is learning new things here everyday. Her experience at JCCS is constantly evolving. She is enjoying teaching her 4th grade students and working with all the teachers. She enjoys baseball and her favorite team is the San Francisco Giants. If she was describe herself as an animal it would be a dog. For fun she enjoys reading, golf and zumba. Mrs. Friedlich worked at Port Monmouth Road School before joining us. She is the newest member to the Child Study Team office. Her experience at JCCS has been great. Mr. Pepper: Mr. Pepper was born in Oceanside, NY. He attended Penn State University for four years. Some of his favorites include pizza, the color blue and Christmas. Mr. Pepper does not watch TV. He does like wrestling and his favorite team is the Keansburg Titans. He loves to read because you can learn anything by reading. His favorite book is The Call of the Wild. His favorite author is Mark Twain. He also said an animal to describe him would be a dog because he is loyal. He enjoys spending time with his two sons, his family and friends. His son Jesse is in 3rd grade and his son Jude is in kindergarten. For Mr. Pepper worked at Bolger Middle School as a 5th grade teacher before joining us. He says he is enjoying his time here very much and his experience has been great. From day one the staff and students made me feel very welcome. He is enjoying working with the 4th grade students and teachers.
