Egg Osmosis Lab

Materials:

Eggs

Water

Plastic cup

Syrup

Index cards (to label each cup)

Paper towels

Vinegar
Procedure:
Day 1:
1. Write the name of each group member on the index card.
2. Observe egg and write down observations in your data sheet.
3. CAREFULLY place the egg in the clear plastic cup and pour enough vinegar over
to egg to just cover the top.
4. Allow the egg to sit for 2 to three minutes in the vinegar. Write down any
observations or changes to the egg or vinegar.
5. Put your egg, cup and index card with your group’s names in the designated spot
in the room.
6. Let the egg sit in the vinegar solution over the weekend.
Day 4:
1. Carefully bring your egg in the cup to your group’s table.
2. Write down any observations you have about your egg.
a. Did the size change?
b. What happened to the shell?
c. What does it look like?
3. Pour out the vinegar into the sink.
4. CAREFULLY rub off any remaining shell with your hands or a wet paper towel.
5. Slowly pour syrup on the egg.
6. Let the egg sit overnight in the syrup.
Day 5:
1. Carefully bring your egg to your group’s table.
2. Write down any observations you have about your egg.
a. Did the size change?
b. What does it look like?
3. Pour the syrup out and carefully add water to the cup.
4. Put the egg back in its spot and let it sit again over night.
Day 6:
5. Carefully bring your egg to your group’s table.
6. Write down any observations you have about your egg.
a. Did the size change?
b. What does it look like?
7. Throw away the egg, cup and index card.
8. Answer the post-lab questions and turn in your data sheet and post lab questions.
