COS 131 AESTHETICS

Course Description
This course is the study of cosmetic products, massage, and skin care, and hair removal, as well as identifying the structure and function of various systems of the body. Topics include massage skin analysis, skin structure, disease and disorders, light therapy, facials, facial cosmetics, and anatomy and hair removal. Upon completion, the student should be able to state procedures for analysis, light therapy, facials, hair removal, identify the structures and functions and disorders of the skin. This is a core course. NDC, CORE

Course Grade Assessment
Tasks will be recorded in booklets which will be provided by the cosmetology department. The minimum tasks are divided into five (5) equal assignments. As lab final, the task performed for testing purposes will be scored for accuracy using a rating sheet, with one being unacceptable and 5 being excellent. Lab grades will be determined by completion of tasks, quality of the task performed, professionalism and practice of proper sanitation and safety measures.
B.
Departmental Assessment of Learning Outcomes
1. The student will demonstrate knowledge of the anatomy of the skin, the disorders of the skin, and maintenance of the health of the skin by scoring a minimum of 75% on selected questions on a written exam.
2. The student will demonstrate knowledge and importance of the client consultation by scoring a minimum of 75% on selected questions on a written and oral exam.
3. The student will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of temporary and permanent hair removal by scoring a minimum of
75% on a written exam.
4. The student will demonstrate knowledge of basic classification and chemistry of skin care products by scoring a minimum of 75% on a written exam.
5. The student will demonstrate knowledge of and understanding of the facial massage and facial treatments by scoring 75% on a written exam.
6. The student will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of aromatherapy by scoring 75% on a written exam.
7. The student will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of electrotherapy and light therapy by scoring 75% on a written exam.

C. Use of Assessment Findings
During the Fall In-service of the year following a scheduled review of this course, a committee will review all course assessment materials submitted by the instructors and division chair. The committee will send a report of any recommended curriculum changes to the division chair, who will then submit them to the Student Learning Outcomes Committee. Upon approval by the Student Learning Outcomes Committee, a copy will be filed with the Office of Institutional Planning and Assessment.
Attendance
Students are expected to attend all classes for which they are registered. Students who are unable to attend class regularly, regardless of the reason or circumstance, should withdraw from that class before poor attendance interferes with the student’s ability to achieve the objectives required in the course. Withdrawal from class can affect eligibility for federal financial aid.
