SYLLABUS
PREREQUISITES: Completion of German 2331 or equivalent. See instructor for more
information.
REQUIRED TEXTS: Briggs & Engel-Doyle, Alles in Allem: This series includes a
green Readings and Activities text, a red Grammar, and blue Guide to the
Audiocassette Program
Di Donato, Fokus Deutsch
Streeruwitz, Lisa’s Liebe
A good German-English dictionary will also be required for this course. Before you
purchase a dictionary, make sure it includes gender, plural forms, prefix or case
indicators, etc. Collins and Langenscheidts are inexpensive and fairly good. Pocket
editions are easy to carry but often inaccurate. If you think you want to continue with
German, buy the best one you can afford.
OPTIONAL TEXT: Zorach, English Grammar for Students of German, especially
helpful for students with less background in grammar
OBJECTIVES: This course offers intermediate-level grammar, contemporary literary
texts, video and audio recordings to expand students’ German comprehension and selfexpression. In-class discussion will increase your fluency, readings increase your
vocabulary and comprehension, and regular writing assignments apply and strengthen
grammar and vocabulary elements.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION: Regular attendance and active participation
are the most basic language class requirement, as these are essential for meeting the
course objectives, and the only way to demonstrate oral improvement. “Active”
participation means preparing all homework assignments well and applying them in class.
If you speak only when called on, or only when sure you have the right answer, you will
miss opportunities to develop fluency and competency. Language learning involves
dedicated preparation and the willingness to risk making mistakes! Therefore, both
irregular attendance and classroom passivity lower grades. More than three unexcused
absences can lower your course grade by .5 for each class hour missed. (Special
arrangements can be made for documented, long-term medical absences.) Finally, you
will demonstrate your oral proficiency in an oral presentation given at the end of the
semester; your instructor will instruct you on this in more detail later in the semester.
READING, LISTENING AND WRITING EXERCISES: Daily exercises from the
grammar book, readings and activities book, and audio program are co-ordinated to
provide first comprehensive explanations and then practice for each unit covered. Try to
preview all assignments before beginning, so that you know how they fit together. All
assignments from the Guide to the Audio Program and from Fokus Deutsch are to be torn
out and handed in. They will be reviewed and evaluated by the instructor. Written
assignments will also accompany Lisa’s Liebe and are intended to facilitate
understanding. Daily classroom discussion will be based on the content of the homework
assignments.
WRITING: Essays (Aufsätze) and the corrected re-writes (Korrektur) are due on
scheduled dates – check the syllabus in advance. The corrected re-write will improve
your original “first version” grade. Essays will be evaluated for grammar, complexity,
and content. The essays should be handed-in, not e-mailed, and DOUBLE SPACED and
TYPED. German word-processing software, including spell-check and grammar guides,
is available in the Language Acquisition Center (AAH-311). You will be writing five
essays during the course of the semester. At the beginning of the semester, essays must
include at least 18 multi-clause sentences. The length of the essays will increase each
time, until you final essay contains 25 multi-clause sentences.
QUIZZES: Short quizzes will check students’ acquisition of grammar and
comprehension of daily classroom instruction. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped.
However, make-up quizzes will not be given.
MIDTERM AND FINAL EXAM: Both exams will cover grammar and reading texts,
and include a writing component. The room for the final exam will be announced at the
end of the semester.
