Assignment #3.2: Reading and Responding to Kozol’s Essay
For today, you were asked to choose the packet that you would like to work with for the
remainder of the semester. Now that you’ve made your choice, the next task is to
continue reading the packet to further your sense of what it’s about.
For Wednesday, November 17th, please read Jonathan Kozol’s “Preparing Minds for
Markets” found in Acting Out Culture on page 530. You will notice in assignment 3.1
that this reading has been assigned to both packets. Please also compose a response to
your reading by including the following:
1. Identify and describe what you see as the major claims made by Kozol throughout
the essay.
2. Explain in detail your interpretation of and reaction or response to those points. In
other words, explain in your own words what you think the author is saying and
what you think of his claims. Explain how these ideas are significant and/or
important to you; you can also discuss whether you agree and/or disagree with
Kozol’s ideas.
This response is the key to understanding your initial views on Kozol’s thoughts, so you
will want to be as specific as possible when voicing your own point of view about the
author’s claims. This response needs to be at least 2 typed pages, and you should refer to
several quotations in order to explain your thinking in detail. As always, I recommend
that you underline passages that stick out to you while you’re reading.
