CAUL SURVEY RESULTS SUMMARY - LIBRARY USE OF MOBILE TECHNOLOGIES Compiled by Annie Yee, Liaison Librarian, RMIT Updated Jan 2011 PURPOSE To determine the extent of mobile technology being used amongst university libraries in Australia and New Zealand. To develop a snapshot of these libraries use of mobile technology both at present and in the near future. To determine which university libraries and which library service are being offered mobile technologies. NOTES For the purpose of this survey, “ mobile devices “ refers to any smart phones, iPhones, iPads, iPod Touch, eBook readers, hand-held devices capable of web connectivity. Where no response or answers are entered on the form, it is assumed that the question is not applicable (NA ) and / or that this information was already provided in response to earlier questions or comments given in summary. Individual university response are reported in Appendix A Questions 1, 2 and 3 refer to services offered on mobile friendly interface and mobile apps. These questions do not refer to services accessed via standard web interface. OVERVIEW – Offering services via mobile friendly/enhanced interface Out of a total of 39 CAUL members, 23 members responded to the survey, giving a response rate of 58.97% 10 out of 23 universities ( 43.5% ) are currently providing a mobile friendly service to check catalogue . This is the most popular service currently available. Within the next 5 years, all 23 universities (all respondents) would have implemented a mobile catalogue. 3 universities currently offer mobile services for users to book rooms, with 3 others planning to offer same service within the next year. 15 universities ( 65.2% ) however have no intention of offering this service in the future. Only I university is currently offering library users the option to book PC via mobile devices. 3 universities have plans to offer this in the future. Booking library classes, study rooms and PCs using mobile devices are services the least offered currently . Over the next year, 8 libraries ( 34.8% ) will be introducing online reference help via mobile devices. 5 libraries already have this currently available. Comments on plans to implement library services using mobile technology in the future Bond University NO, but we are implementing Summon which will enable this without using catalogue directly Charles Sturt University Other services planned for next year - Alerts ( hold requests, disruptions to services) Document: 106761265 Author: Annie Yee Save Date: 08/03/2016 Page 1 of 16 Comments on plans to implement library services using mobile technology in the future Swinburne University of Technology Currently offering services to check borrower records for fines via Primo. James Cook University We're monitoring other universities' experiences University of Canberra eBook readers recently investigated – report available on request. Prefers IT Services Unit to manage loan of laptops University of Melbourne iPad in the next 3- 5 years - May introduce a limited number to assist staff and students to become familiar with this technology University of Queensland iPads - Possibly – the “problem” is that they are personal devices so if we do lend them they will be for a semester at a time. More likely to partner with schools on this. eBook readers - In my view, increasingly redundant devices. University of Sunshine Coast No current plans to implement these services – will consider within the next 3 years Document: 106761265 Author: Annie Yee Save Date: 08/03/2016 Page 4 of 16 Comments on lending out laptops, iPads and eBook readers. At this stage codes to be used on Learning management system (BlackBoard), selected Library web pages and libguides, posters & tshirts. Trial will include some form of survey regarding ownership and use of mobile devices. Curtin University of Technology We used them on the promotional posters for the mobile library website but haven't made use of them since. Deakin University Promotional posters once scanned, leads mobile phone user to mobile catalogue Queensland University of Technology We are about to implement QR codes in our Catalogue to provide item details (including location and call number). Expected GoLive February 2011. RMIT University We have run a trial of QR codes but haven’t done a permanent implementation University of Canberra QR codes not implemented to date – would consider implementing as part of university-wide strategy in collaboration with Marketing Unit. University of Melbourne We are just commencing a pilot project to introduce QR codes. Amongst other uses, we plan to use them on promotional posters, and to point to ebooks. University of Queensland We have embedded QR codes into our classic catalogue to save people copying call numbers – not sure how much use has been made of it, although I personally do use it. We are also placing them on posters, signs and other things where help might be needed (eg printer card recharge machines). GENERAL COMMENTS / SUMMARY RESPONSES Auckland University of Technology The Library has no mobile-device interface as yet but Google Analytics shows that users do use such devices to access services. Some of the above services could be included when the Library introduces a mobile interface in 2011. The Library works closely with other service areas across the University and will take part in any University plans to roll out mobile services. The Library also plans to develop a mobile interface for Library users in 2011 Bond University I have responded literally to the questions about plans, and indicated NO where there are no specific plans in place. However for most of these activities it is highly likely that we will be looking at making them available for mobile devices within the 5 year timeframe. The topic of mobile technology is currently being discussed in many contexts, and planning will begin soon about what functions we will explore further. A mobile webbased function to identify vacant computers is currently under development, and there is a project underway to ensure the whole of the University’s website (including the library section) is suitable for use on a mobile device. Charles Sturt University CSU Library is currently participating in a University-wide project to enhance the current student web experience. As part of this project we are involved in the proposal for a mobile web interface and also a mobile application. The launch date for a mobile interface is early 2011 with a mobile application to follow. The University is currently transferring web management to a CMS (Content Management System) which provides functionality for a mobile interface. The Library is also launching a new library catalogue which has an inbuilt mobile interface. This will allow patrons to search the catalogue, request items, renew loans etc. while “on the go”. As part of the CAUL Library Client survey which CSU Library ran in September 2010, the Library included a question on what library services clients would like to access via a mobile interface. The survey results are not yet available from Insync. Curtin University of Technology We have had a mobile website for over a year http://m.library.curtin.edu.au/ and in addition to the questions above we also provide an A-Z Database list (with links), Computer Availability (in real time) and Past Exam Papers. We have an iPod app in development that should be live before the end of the year which will do all this plus Map view of library locations. Our new catalogue (Ex Libris Primo) has a mobile view which will be enabled by the end of this year and that will allow some of the patron functions mentioned above. Document: 106761265 Author: Annie Yee Save Date: 08/03/2016 Page 6 of 16 GENERAL COMMENTS / SUMMARY RESPONSES James Cook University We will include a question on mobile device use/preference in our next client survey. Very unclear on what you mean by 'offered on mobile phone'. Our web site is usable on most current gen devices (iphone etc) are you asking if there are apps specifically built for these services? Our OPAC does have a mobile/disability friendly interface available. Does SMSing overdue, recall and hold waiting notices constitute a mobile service? Queensland University of Technology We currently have a mobile interface for our discovery system, Summon. In the next two months we will implement a mobile interface for the Library Catalogue and release a university iPhone app which includes mobile room bookings. We are currently undertaking an investigation into mobile use, demand for mobile services and mobile access to resources RMIT University The survey answers may have been different if we were asked to answer services setup for ipads and other mobile devices eg ipod touch. There is really a fine line in defining a difference between the technologies and maybe the difference in screen size is the clue Swinburne University of Technology 1 2 3 4 5 The Primo discovery layer is the means by which many services are offered. In some cases mobile phone access is fairly basic, and it is planned to upgrade this. Configuration is not in place for all mobile phone types. Swinburne has around 500 laptops for loan to students – we are unlikely to provide other mobile devices for loan in the short term. We have conducted a survey of ownership and use of laptops, not mobile devices more widely. A copy is attached. University of Auckland Currently offers New Books RSS feeds, University of Auckland Tweets University of Canberra Teaching & Learning Centre is considering a survey to inform migration to Moodle2 in 2011; ICT Unit is considering loan of iPads and netbooks in 2011 Library news but can be read currently as downloadable pdf University of Melbourne Services that are currently offered are on standard , mobile friendly website. Services planned for next year onwards will be via mobile specific website. While we use mobile-friendly templates, our use of mobile-specific Library applications has been temporarily slowed by the departure of a key staff member. For example we have purchased the relevant Innovative catalogue modules and hope to instal them asap. The Centre for the Study of Higher Education was involved in a study of netgeneration students that has some relevancy – see http://www.netgen.unimelb.edu.au/publications/published.html Document: 106761265 Author: Annie Yee Save Date: 08/03/2016 Page 7 of 16 GENERAL COMMENTS / SUMMARY RESPONSES University of Queensland Currently able to check computer availability. Links to mobile versions of RefWorks University of Technology, Sydney The UTS Library’s strategic plan includes a strategy to enhance business processes through mobile services, specifically in relation to the ILMS. We are aiming to introduce mobile hardware for staff, to carry out functions such as stocktakes, check-in, count internal use, rapid update, inventory control etc. The multipurpose devices can also be used by staff to assist client queries whilst roaming.
