This VFT is geared to Science students in grade 6, 7, 8. I. Introduction What are we ever going to use this for? This is a common question in many classrooms. The VFT will engage students in exploring science related careers while learning and practicing science concepts. We begin our trip with “Mission Impossible” music while the first slide of Sherlock Holmes and his magnifying glass fill the screen. As the sound of the music increases, photos of crime scenes (no dead people) will rapidly fade in ad fade out. II. Topic One- Interviews of Crime Scene Investigators Students will view interviews of agents that regularly investigate a variety of crime scenes. Topic Two- Interviews of Lab Technicians Students will learn of the history of Crime Labs , Edmund Locard, 1910. Students will view interviews of lab techs that categorizes types of Evidence into prints, impressions, hair/fiber and blood evidence. Topic Three- State of Illinois Crime Lab Courtesy of the Illinois State Police, students will be taken on a virtual tour of the State of Illinois Crime Lab, located in Chicago, Illinois. V. Topic Four- Put it into practice. Students will work in “detective teams” to observe, organize, record data, Think critically and conduct tests to solve a crime of their own. A skull has been located on the school grounds. It is found with a bag of money next to it and potential evidence scattered about. Students will secure evidence such as footprints, make casts, lift and identify fingerprints, analyze hair and fiber and blood specimans. Video tape to add to VFT.
